School Success

The single best indicator of school success is communication.

If children enter kindergarten with age appropriate communication skills, they usually do fine. How do you help your child achieve communication competence?

It is pretty simple. Mainly, if you talk to your child, show interest, and play with them, they will learn communication skills.

But you do all of this, what now?

First, examine your interactions.

Are you telling too much?

Asking too much?

Second, take a look at your priorities.

Are you making time to practice?

Is play time important?

Third, do you have a plan?

What do you want your child to do?

Ask for water?

Say please?

Finally, what are you rewarding?

Is it the behavior that you want, or something that won’t be cute in a few years, like yelling to get some candy?

If you need help with your behaviors, check out our videos for parents.

Speech: What sounds should my 5 year old say?

Your five year old should have speech that is very similar to an adult.  He should be able to say most sounds, most of the time.  Errors will still occur but they should be diminishing.  You should understand your child, as should everyone they meet.

If your child has trouble with the /s, r, or th/ sounds, do not worry.  These are late developing sounds.  Some children don’t develop these until later, around 7.

Why Do I Make These Mistakes?

Accent mistakes are related to the lack of a sound in your native language. When you don’t have a sound, then you just leave it out of the word, or replace it. If you replace it, typically you use a sound that is “close” to the sound that you do not have in your repertoire.

If you leave off a sound, your accent may sound like this:

“Ba” for BATH (no T in the word)
“Pitcher” for PICTURE (no K in the word)

If you replace sounds, your accent may sound like this:

“Bat” or “baf” for BATH (changed the TH to a T or F)
“Picksher” for PICTURE (changed the CH sound to SH)

Lift a flap books by Karen Katz

I came across these short, fun, colorful, lift a flap books by accident.  They have quickly become some of my favorites.  The children (ages 2-5) that I work with love them too.  They are charming for children and adults.  As most parents know, children enjoy hearing the same story again and again.  Reading these books for the 100th time is still fun for me.  Let’s hope that continues since they are a crowd pleaser.

I think the kids like them because they get to do something.  The stories are simple and easy to remember.  The kids get a kick out of reading too.  Since the stories are simple, they quickly learn the book and know what to say to finish each page.

As a therapist, I love that the children get a lot of repetitive practice.  They are easy to modify depending on the child’s level.  For instance, I can have a child work on single words to label what is under the flap.  Or, I can work on asking questions, making sentences, describing, or just saying yes, no, or my turn.

For more information, check out Karen’s website.

Happy “lifting” and reading:)
