Binge Blogging: Create Content Consistently
I love a boxset binge!
When you discover a series on Netflix and will happily sit there, watching episode after episode, until your eyelids droop, you’ve tipped popcorn into your lap and dribbled tea down your onesy*!
*(I don’t actually have a onesy – just setting the scene, creative licence and all that!)
When you’re in the mood for something, it’s the easiest thing in the world to just keep going.
Going With The Flow
Sometimes, I’m all or nothing.
I’ll get really into something, do it to death, then walk away for months, even years afterwards.
When I wrote the Sheridan and Blake books, I wrote fiction every weeknight for the best part of three years to get all four books written and published.
That was my life.
Yet now, I just can’t muster the enthusiasm to write long fiction.
I will write fiction again, when I have another project to get passionate about, I know I will – I just don’t know when!
Peaks and Troughs
When it comes to writing shorter form blog content, I also have peaks and troughs of enthusiasm, motivation and inspiration.
When I’m in the flow I’ll go for it and can bash out four or five draft blogs in a few hours – a blogging binge!
Other days, I sit there, glaring at the blinking cursor, not a clue what to write, and suddenly emptying the dishwasher is a high priority job!
Make The Most Of It
When you have those moments where it all comes together, make the most of it!
Embrace the binge, there are tools to accommodate…
My mind was blown when I discovered the WordPress Scheduling tool…
Here it is…
On my set up, when I’m drafting a blog, it’s on the right hand side of the screen.
Click ‘edit’ choose a date to publish on and hit ‘schedule’.
Boom!
Mind Blown!
I know, right? (Also – Neil DeGrasse Tyson, what a legend!)
This is amazing for 4 reasons
1) Distribute Your Blogs Evenly
It means when I’m in a creative peak, and write lots of content, I can spread it out over time. I can publish consistently, instead if publishing three blogs in a few days then nothing for weeks!
2) Publish When Appropriate
I have a theme for my marketing every month.
Some months my focus is on blogging support, others it’s all about books, or ideas. It aligns with my business goals throughout the year and allows me to group elements of my business into sensible and related chunks.
However, just because, for example #LoveToLearn is my theme for February, doesn’t mean that all I’m thinking about in February is ‘learning’!
I may have a blog idea that fits much better into my March theme of #FreshThinking or December’s #Thriftmas theme.
I’ll write what inspires me, when it inspires me, then schedule it to fit in with my business plans.
By using the scheduling tool, I can also publish blogs when people are actually likely to want them – and not at 10pm on a Sunday afternoon when I happen to have a good idea and the time to sit and do it!
3) Build Up A Bank Of Drafts
When I am in a creative binge, I rarely craft publishable content. It’s raw, it’s full of errors and is probably several ideas lumped together.
In the creative mindset, it’s important to just get the ideas out of your head and onto the screen, then worry about the quality of the writing later.
It’s in those creative troughs, when my analytical brain is heightened, that’s when I’ll revisit those draft blogs, edit and tidy them up. I can then schedule them in as appropriate, instead of interrupting my creative time with analytical tasks.
4) Get Ahead Of Yourself
The reality of self-employment is that some months you will be really busy, hardly able to catch your breath between appointments and events.
Other months, the only thing you see on the horizon is tumbleweed.
By making the most of your creative peaks and using the scheduling tools when you’re in analytical mode, you can have several weeks/months (a whole year, even) of blogs already scheduled in to automatically publish at the appropriate time.
No need to panic that you’ve not written a blog this month because you ran out of time!
Get ahead. Learn how to create a content calendar and plan your creative content around your creative rhythms.

Fall In Love With Your Blog (A-Z of Blogging)
My love affair with blogging started in 2013 when I was in process of publishing my first book – The Bronze Box.
Every day I did one thing towards publishing and marketing my first book, then every week I would blog my seven actions.
As someone who has been writing for pleasure for as long as I remember, blogging allows me to market my business – growing my brand and influence – doing the one thing I’d be doing anyway… WRITING!
I Love Blogging Because:
It’s an excuse to write
I find it cathartic to write
The more I do it the better my writing gets
I can re-purpose my words into information products to earn me more money as a business!
That’s why L is for Love in my A-Z of Blogging series.
I call my business ‘Learn To Love Your Words’ because when you love doing something, you will always find time to do it.
My Mission
My mission is to help people who want to write for their own business (whether it’s a blog, or a book) to love the process. To find the confidence and joy to write for themselves and get the skills they need to make it work for their business.
I work with passionate entrepreneurs who have a powerful message to share.
The one thing they all have in common is they do work that they can’t NOT do.
What does that mean for you, and how will it feel to communicate that message in your own words?
Why are you doing the work you are doing?
This TED talk got me thinking…
What is the work you can’t NOT do?
Above all else, enjoy it!
Write about what you love and what you are passionate about, then articulating it in writing quickly becomes a pleasure.
Fall in love with your words and find your writing mojo…

5 Do’s and Don’ts of Setting Up a Website
I’m always happy to consider guests on the blog, so when writer Natalia Tsahelnik contacted me with her ideas I was happy to give her a chance.
Here are her top tips when you set up your website…
5 Do’s and Don’ts of Setting Up a Website
Running your own website is not a breeze, but building it from scratch can be an even more intimidating task. Before you plunge into the world of web design and marketing, take a look at the following do’s and don’ts of setting up your brand new website. There are many things to overlook, especially if you are inexperienced, so having a plan can help you avoid the teething troubles associated with the process.
#1. DO Choose Your Domain Wisely
Your domain is one of the first things your potential customers see, so it is worth investing in it. that are incomprehensible, made up of several words (especially if they are long or easy to misspell), and difficult to remember are not the best option. Opt for something shorter, related to the field you specialize in, and having a meaning. The latter is not necessary, though – some companies jump at the opportunity when a chance springs up to purchase a short yet meaningless domain. The reason is that shorter domains are valued a lot due to their, well, shortness. Another thing to avoid in domain names is hyphens, as they make them look bulky.
#2. DON’T Write Poor Content for the Sake of Content
Before rolling out your website, think about what content your target audience is interested in. What useful information will they be able to find on your pages? What can you do for them for free to attract them and increase the chances of their buying from you?
Instead of posting incoherent texts comprised of the chunks that users are most likely to use as search queries when googling, create informative content that will make everyone understand you have them, not search engines, in mind. And you know what? It should really be so.
#3. DO Make It User-Friendly
Not only does your website have to be informative, but it should also be easy to navigate. All sections should be easily accessible, so that website visitors do not have to spend several minutes trying to figure out how to take a look at your price list, contact information, etc.
User-friendliness also implies not using large images that take ages to load. The content should flow, and the overall airy appearance of the website can help you avoid cluttering your pages.
#4. DON’T Neglect Optimization and Mobile-Friendliness
Today, more people are accessing websites by means of portable devices, be it tablets or smartphones. It means that pages should be optimized to reduce loading times. If you fail to do so, chances are your visitors will prefer to close the tab instead of waiting. Besides, your design should be mobile friendly so that it can adjust automatically depending on what device is used.
However unnecessary it may seem to those who have not worked in the industry yet, investing into making your website code error-free is worth the money spent. The fewer errors there are, the faster the website loads, which means more prospective clients will get to the stage where they can see your design and content. To ensure better loading times, choose a hosting provider wisely. Do some research, compare different providers’ recent performance, and choose the one that seems to be most reliable.
#5. DO Use Visuals
A website comprised of a wall of text is doomed. Use images to make your information vivid. Make sure they do not take a lot of time to load, though, so as not to sacrifice loading time. Choosing images for your website is trickier than it may seem, because they should be in line with your brand voice and convey your message to the audience.
Keep in mind that it is best to use your own, unique pictures. If you cannot afford them, buy stock images, of which there are myriads. Don’t use copyrighted items without permission.
Planning a website implies a lot of work, and the things listed above are often overlooked by beginner website owners. If you are not sure you can sail through the process alone, hire professionals and delegate the task to them.

You Get Out What You Put In – A Lesson From An Angry Man

I was on a bus the other day, with an angry elderly gentleman sat in the row behind me.
It was his behaviour that spurred on this random little thought piece!
Angry At The World
The whole 20-minute bus journey, the elderly gentleman chuntered away to himself, angry at everyone and everything.
He was swearing about the traffic.
Grumbling about the stupidity of pedestrians outside.
Huffing at the red traffic lights.
Moaning about the slowness of the bus.
Tutting at the other passengers.
Scowling at the loudly-laughing child opposite.
All he did was radiate negativity.
Can you imagine living with someone like that?
He was alone (unsurprisingly), so the only person on the receiving end of all that negativity was himself.
Sat in a cloud of doom and gloom of his own making.
I’d be willing to bet he spends a good proportion of his day watching the news or reading the tabloids. The product of decades of negative messaging.
Choose A Happier Life
I couldn’t help but wonder how much happier his life would be if he stopped to pay attention to the good and the positive in his life.
At his age (he must have been in his 70’s or 80’s), he’s consciously choosing to spend his last few years hating his life – how tragic is that?
Now, I’m a pragmatist – I’m not naive. I know the world can be a dark and frightening place. There is death and misery everywhere. People are living in desperate poverty, wars, famine, fear, disease, slavery, abuse, violent crime – I walk past a growing number of desperate homeless people in my own city every day.
I also appreciate the gentlemen may have had mental health issues.
However…
I’m constantly inspired by human kindness and compassion. By all the creative, innovate and entrepreneurial people who work tirelessly to make the world a better place.
If you spend your life looking for the negative, that’s all you’ll see.
The thing about expecting disappointment, is that you’ll rarely disappoint yourself!
Your Choice
An elderly man, well groomed, mobile enough to make it up the stairs to the top deck for a free bus ride in a beautiful city on a sunny day. Yet, he chooses to only see the bad, working himself up over minor everyday things he has no control over.
Which Beast To Feed?
Do you feed the angry bear, so it gets stronger, or you feed the caterpillar so it can become a butterfly?
Cheesy, I know, but a serious message.
Whichever part you choose to feed – be it the negative or the positive – that’s the part that will flourish.
You decide.
Feed the positive. Feed your own creativity and love your words…

Stuck In Traffic: Why Aren’t People Coming To Your Website?
It’s a common problem. There just isn’t as much traffic coming to your wesbite as you would have expected. So what’s going wrong?
Top tips from a contributor:
Stuck in Traffic
There’s no doubt that, in the modern world, your business is going to need the internet in order to succeed. We have such a technologically minded culture that not having some kind of presence on the web is one of the easiest ways to make sure that your business falls at the first hurdle. However, just having a presence online isn’t enough, you need to make sure that it’s a good one. One of the most common problems that a lot of small startups have, especially in the early days, is that no one is actually visiting their website. With that in mind, here are some of the reasons that your website is being ignored.
They Can’t Find It
The most common reason why you’re not getting nearly the amount of traffic to your website that you might be expecting is simply that no one knows about it. The truth is that the internet is so full of content that it’s incredibly easy for a single website to get lost amidst all of the noise. You need to make sure that you’re aware of the latest digital marketing techniques. One of the best ways to do this is to work with professionals. Working alongside an SEO or PPC agency to increase the visibility of your website is one of the best ways to grow your audience quickly. That way you can be sure that you’re doing the right things and you’re not wasting your time.
The Design Is Bad
Of course, the problem might not be that people can’t find your website, it might just be that they click away as soon as they arrive. There are plenty of reasons that this might happen but the most obvious is that it’s just ugly. It might sound shallow but customers don’t have the time to look past ugly and obscuring design choices to get the good stuff. You need to make sure that your website is as instantly appealing as possible. Once again, working with a professional web designer is one of the best things that you can do in this situation.
There’s No Interesting Content
Then again, if your website is all style and no substance then that’s hardly going to encourage people to visit it either. You need to make sure that your website has enough content that people will actually want to visit it. From a well-constructed store page to a blog section, there are plenty of ways that you can engage customers once they arrive at your website, you just need to figure out which are the best options for you.
One thing that it’s important to remember is that you can’t assume that this is a problem that only impacts those who are just starting out. The truth is that these are problems that even well-established businesses can run into. You need to remember that the world is constantly changing and it’s happening faster all of the time. You need to make sure that you’re updating your website and look to the future as much as you can to ensure that you’re not falling behind the competition.

A Vision For Freedom
Travel. Freedom. Exploring. Adventure. Escaping. What’s not to love?
When I worked as a startup trainer for an enterprise agency a few years back – while I was being trained in their teaching materials – I have a vivid memory of the first time I participated in one of the exercises we did with our clients.
The exercise was about having a vision.
Freedom to visualise
He’s my version of it – go on, give it a try…
Find a quiet, comfortable place.
Close your eyes.
Focus on your breathing for a moment.
Take a couple of long, deep, in and out breaths.
Now, imagine what your life will be like in 5 years time.
Where are you?
What are you doing?
Who are you with?
What can you see?
How does it sound?
Are there any smells?
How do you feel?
Think, don’t question, just let the feelings and images immerse you.
Stick with it for a few moments.
When you’re ready, take a deep breath in and out then open your eyes.
Now make a note of what you remember.
I saw the prow of a speedboat, as if I were lounging at the front, feeling the freedom of the wind and spray on my face as we rode the waves.
It was exhilarating. Fresh. Fun. The sun was warm on my back, the sea salty and cool on my cheeks…
The second time I did this exercise, I was lying on my back looking up at a round skylight, surrounded by fabric, comfort and softness.
I interpreted this as being in a yurt…
It was warm. Comforting. I felt cocooned yet in touch with everything around me.
There was a sense of anticipation, and again, freedom.
A Life of Speedboats and Yurts
Neither speedboats, or yurts feature regularly in my life in the city of Bristol UK. Although, we do have a great restaurant in a yurt – Yurt Lush – and ferries around the harbour (although they’re not especially speedy)!
In both cases, the lasting impression I took from these ‘visions’, was my deep desire to feel free.
To travel, experience new things. Feeling sea spray and sunshine and warmth and comfort.
The Heart of Your Business
It all contributes to really getting to the heart of what you want from your business, why you are doing it and how you want your future to be.
It doesn’t matter if the vision ‘doesn’t come true’
It’s about recognising what you want, feeling it, then focusing on it and striving for it.
When you’re driving a business forward, never lose sight of that overall purpose.
It gives you strength in the bleak times, joy when you find the meaning in your work and a positive goal to focus on.
Sunshine and Sea-spray
I know my life won’t always be sunshine and sea-spray, but the great joy of self-employment, for me at least, is the freedom to explore what I want, why I do what I do and find some purpose in my work and my life.
I called my business Learn To Love Your Words because in my own small, humble way, as a writer, I want to help others find their freedom in the art of writing.
Find freedom through writing for yourself…

Your Digital Business Is The key To Your Success, But Are Your Going Wrong Somewhere?
Your Digital Business Is The key To Your Success, But Are Your Going Wrong Somewhere?
Years ago, if you were to say that you were a blogger or created videos for YouTube, you would have been looked at blankly. Years ago if someone asked you what your job was and you responded that you were a website creator, a social media manager, or a digital entrepreneur they would think you were joking. But now these digital businesses, these digital careers, they have become a reality, and so you find that more and more people are doing these things. But if this is you, are you going wrong somewhere? Could you do more to be more successful? Here are some of the things that you can consider.
The admin may still need work
Administration is often overlooked when you work digitally, as administration is associated with paperwork. Online businesses tend to be that, online, so admin is just something you might not even think about. But, there will still be elements of documents that need managing, receipts, invoices that need filling or categorising. This is when websites like https://www.templafy.com/enterprise-document-management/ could help you out. They will enable you to get things in order, even digitally, so that you can manage to run your blog or digital business far more effectively.
Remaining professional in a digital world
It can be hard to stay and remain professional in the digital world, there is something about being behind the computer that can protect you in some way. Being deface to face you would ensure that the right impression is made, but it can be harder to maintain that online. Always ensure that your conduct on emails remains professional and informative. Responding to emails and direct messages promptly may open up doors in the future that you didn’t know was possible.
Your website and your blog are your shopfronts
There is no hiding from the fact that your website or your blog is the equivalent of someone having a retail shop or outlet where they do business from. It is your digital version, and so you need to ensure that it ticks the boxes for you. Is your website responsive? Does it have everything that a customer’s needs? Is it easy to navigate? In a digital world, things move faster, so you may want to ensure that your blog or business website can keep up with the pace.
Social media could be your biggest asset, use it wisely
One of the biggest assists that online businesses and blog have is social media. It can be a great way to advertise what you are doing, share your content as well as being a great platform to sell your products and services. But, so many people use social media that you need to ensure that you use it wisely. This means that your constant isn’t always about gaining something from it. You need to share your brand, what you are all about. You need to give your following something, in order for them to want to stick around. Mixing sales focused content with other information or behind the scenes looks at your business could be a good step to make.
Let’s hope these tips help you to move your digital business and blog forward.

Blog Exposure 101
One of the commonest questions I’m asked by my business blogging mentees is…
“How do I get more exposure for my blog?”
Here are some great tips from a contributor to make the most out of your wonderful words…
Blog Exposure 101
There’s one thing that every blogger needs these days: exposure. Without it, there is no way you will be able to build up a sizeable audience that will eventually help you monetize the site. Unfortunately, though, exposure is something that many bloggers struggle with. Even though their content might be on-point and they publish some really interesting articles, without getting enough exposure, you might find that hardly anyone is navigating to your website.
There are a few ways you can improve your exposure over time. Read on to find out more.
Work On The Blog’s SEO
One of the first things you need to do is sort out the SEO for your blog’s website. This is important as good website SEO management means that there’s a good chance of the site being ranked highly in Google’s search results. So, when people are searching for keywords that are used on your site, they’ll potentially see your blog in the first few results and will be a lot more likely to click on it as a result.
Get Your Social Networks Excited About The Blog
If you already use different social media platforms, it’s a good idea to start publishing links to all of your blog articles on these websites. That way, more people will see them and will likely click through the link. Plus, it’s easy for your Twitter followers to share your blog posts by posting the links themselves or retweeting your tweets. If you use a few hashtags in your posts, you can help your blog spread even further.
Link To Other Blogs In Your Posts
If you don’t already link to other blogs in your own posts, it’s worth starting to do so now. This will encourage your readers to click the links and land on the other websites. The other blog’s analytics tracker should show the other blogger that you sent them there. Most bloggers like to repay this favour by linking back to websites. So, the more you tag other bloggers in your articles, then the more they will tag you too.
Network With Other Bloggers
It’s also worth reaching out to other bloggers directly. If there are any local events for bloggers in your area, you might want to go to these for instance. By chatting to fellow bloggers, you will be able to hear all their great tips and advice for spreading the word about your blog. You might even come up with some cool collaboration projects, which will expose you to another blogger’s audience.
Respond To All Your Comments
Don’t forget that you should be replying to everyone who leaves a comment on your post. This will encourage readers to engage with you and return to keep following your blog. It’s also a good idea to leave comments on other blogs as well, so that other people who are commenting will find out about your blog that way.
Hopefully, all of these tips help you get a lot more exposure for your own blog!

When Storytelling Became A Marketing Buzzword
Everyone’s talking about storytelling, it’s the latest trendy buzzword in marketing.
I really hate jargon, and the way ‘storytelling’ has become jargon especially irks me – as a lifelong storyteller, story-lover and fiction writer!
Let me qualify that slightly grumpy statement…
Storytelling IS how humans communicate and make sense of the world.
It’s how we learn from each other.
How we empathise with others.
The way we make real human connections – through shared experience, values, aspirations, and emotional reactions to different situations.
We are, by definition, a sociable species. It’s how we survive.
Sharing our knowledge and lessons through storytelling is how we educate, inform and entertain each other. From telling tall tales of fantastic beasts around campfires in caves, to tuning into our favourite series on Netflix and laughing or crying along with our favourite characters.
Good marketing – successful sales – is simply relationship building.
Millennia of evolution has taught us, instinctively, that telling and sharing stories is how we develop relationships.
Although, these days our camp fires are Social Media threads!
All of which is amazing and wonderful – but what I really can’t abide is when it’s disingenuous.
Storytelling needs to be authentic to be truly effective, as opposed to cynically successful!
Storytelling as a marketing practice is on the rise.
Don’t just take it from me, Linked In completed a comprehensive data study looking at the number of marketers listing storytelling as a skill on their Linked In profile and tracking its increase since 2011.
Read the results and check out the infographic here: ‘The Rise Of Storytelling In Marketing As Told By Linked In Data’
It was this line that struck me…
“Marketers may have liked the buzzword, but they didn’t take storytelling seriously as a skill.”
Telling stories is a serious skill, it’s not a buzzword.

Be Known For Your Knowledge (A-Z of Blogging)
“Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit.
Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad”
I do enjoy a pub quiz. It was a regular event when we had a lodger living with us.
Pitting our knowledge against fellow drinkers in a local pub, my hairless-husband was ‘boldylocks’ and myself, our lodger and her friend were the ‘three birds’ – we never won, but never came last either!
The definition of an easy question is one you know the answer to, and being in a room with a quizmaster and other teams has a way of making you feel either like a genius or a complete idiot!
The definition of an easy question is one you know the answer to
At pub quizzes with questions about football or reality TV, ‘Boldylocks and The Three Birds’ were an embarrassment.
At quizzes with history and geography questions, we were competing with the winners.
A Great Motivator
Sharing and learning are great motivators for anyone running their own business.
We’re constantly striving to be better than we were yesterday, both personally and professionally.
Communicating your knowledge is one of the greatest benefits of blogging for your business.
Knowledge is why people will seek you out, wisdom is where you add value.
We can look up a question on Google, get the answer from a blog, but that alone is not enough for us to action that new found information.
If you worry you are giving away too much for free on your blog, ask yourself, “Am I giving away my knowledge or my wisdom?”
Knowledge is easy to seek out and acquire, where you add value as a business is in sharing your wisdom, and that’s what people will pay for.
It’s one thing to know something, quite another to apply in practice.
Understanding how your knowledge draws people into your world is why K is for Knowledge in my A-Z of Blogging.
The only way you’ll increase your knowledge is to ASK…
Always
Seek
Knowledge
Be the answer when people ASK questions, by openly and generously sharing your knowledge.
Build a profile for yourself as an influencer and an expert in your work by writing your own blogs.
