Garden Bloggers Bloom Day: August

Did you ever wonder where the term, the “Dog Days of August” came from? Do you suppose it refers to hot weather and a general malaise? Well, sort of. The Romans named the days from July 23 through August 23 for the dog star, Sirius. Romans feared these days so much that they did some vile stuff to appease their [...]

August Garden Observations

Remember all that hurrying and scurrying we did from late February to June? Well, the dog days of August are here, and because I don’t have to work so hard, I’ve had time to make a few August garden observations. 1. Weeds never leave. Sure, once things heat up, the spring weeds take a hike, [...]

Stories from the Garden Bloggers Fling: Chickadee Gardens

If your mind is still a blur from all the sensory input even two weeks later, how would you write the stories of the Garden Bloggers Fling? First, we’ll start with some facts: This year the fling was in Portland, a gardener blogger paradise. Three full days of glorious garden touring. We went to seventeen gardens. That’s a lot! The [...]

Garden Bloggers Bloom Day: July

I got home last night at Midnight after a seven-day journey first to Boise, Idaho for a visit with Mary Ann Newcomer and then to Portland, Oregon, for Garden Bloggers Fling. I am weary. I almost posted one tomato blossom for this July Garden Bloggers Bloom Day. Almost. There’s something about coming back from garden tours that [...]

Four B’s to daylily garden zen

You may have noticed a lot of daylily bloom posts on Red Dirt Ramblings this year. For those of you bored by all this hemnut nonsense, I promise we’ll be back to regular programing soon. I’m headed to the Garden Bloggers Bling in Portland this week, and I hope to post a lot of photos to [...]

Come on over to daylily’s dark side

Imagine, for a moment, Darth Vader holding a daylily scape in his hand instead of a light saber. He’s exhorting Luke Skywalker to come on over to the dark side, but instead of talking about the Force, he’s speaking of velvety soft and dark daylily blooms. How could Luke ever resist? Okay, maybe you don’t like the [...]

With rain, the garden grows

This year, I am reminded that gardening is so much easier when the sun doesn’t overwhelm plants suffering from drought. With a little rain, the garden grows in beauty and grace. The last three years Oklahoma suffered with high temperatures and terrible drought, not as terrible as California, but bad enough. Even though we fought the good fight [...]

Garden Bloggers Bloom Day, June 2014

One the great gifts of Carol Michel’s long-running meme, Garden Bloggers Bloom Day, is the chronicling of one’s own garden throughout the years. I’ve participated most months since May 15, 2008, when I wrote about my David Austin roses. Since I’ve done this for so many seasons, I find some things never change. The roses bloom April and [...]

Daylily season is in full swing

We’ve reached my husband’s favorite time of the gardening year, and coincidentally, it always occurs right around his birthday. It is daylily season, and we are in full swing. Whenever Bill gets home from work and once we’ve had dinner, he and I walk the gardens to see the day’s blooms. I’m charmed that my big and burly husband [...]

Reading and weeding on a rain-soaked Monday

Since last Thursday, it’s rained every day throughout most of Oklahoma. I took these pictures after this morning’s rain. I’m not sure how much rain we’ve received because I forgot to empty my rain gauge before drops began to fall. According to the Oklahoma Mesonet, Guthrie received 3.28 inches in the last seven days. I [...]
