TRIUMPHS & TRUTHS of 2015

giphy (9)

I can’t believe it’s gone SO fast. Where the hell did 2015 go? If you want to read last year’s post, you can find it HERE.

Get ready for a long-winded post. Either skim or study, the choice is yours. Either way, it would read better with a drink (I recommend a lychee martini) Ignore typos, too. (I’m not perfect and can’t be bothered hunting them down)

TRIUMPHS OF 2015

In convenient bullet point form:

I released six books. Five of those were self-published and one of those was traditional with Hachette. Seeing my book in airports and on book shelves was entirely surreal.
I attended six signings. Five of those were in the USA in a combined two month tour in America and Canada. And one was in the wonderful city of Melbourne. All of them were beyond amazing to catch up with authors and readers who I’m lucky enough to call friends.
I hit the USA Today Bestseller list seven times (Second Debt, Monsters in the Dark Boxed Set, Take me, Third Debt, Fourth Debt, Ruin & Rule, Final Debt)
I hit the New York Times Bestseller list twice. (Monsters in the Dark Boxed Set and Fourth Debt)
I hit the Wall Street Journal twice (Monsters in the Dark Boxed Set and Fourth Debt) This was a MAJOR goal of mine in 2015 so to hit, not once but twice, totally made my year. Xx
My first traditional book was released and I loved every second of the process with my editors and agent. They made the experience so much fun and I was honoured to wine and dine with them in New York. A true life time achievement and I’m so lucky to have experienced it.
I sold Italian and Turkish rights to my work. Having the copies arrive at my house in different languages was AMAZING. I’ve also recently agreed to sell German and Greek so watch this space.
I’ve enlisted the help of some amazing narrators to record the Indebted Series and Monsters in the Dark. Audio books will be releasing VERY SOON.
I managed to take some time out for me and my family in December and remembering how to live OFFLINE was one of the most important lessons I relearned this year. I’m no longer a slave to my phone or email and the quality of my life has improved drastically.
I never lost track of just how damn lucky I am and that every day is a blessing.
Hubby and I bought two major purchases this year. A piece of land to eventually build on (over two hectares of heaven) and a Tuscan inspired house that needs a renovation but was literally built for us with how perfect it is. I’m in love with both and so grateful that we were able to afford it.

I think that’s enough. It’s been a crazy, awesome year and I’m sad to see 2015 go but have huge hopes for 2016.

giphy (13)

Right…onto the not so good stuff.

TRIBULATIONS OF 2015

Last year I didn’t list any trials as I choose not to focus on negativity and delete any minor issues I might face. However, this year, I can honestly say I didn’t have any problems to overcome. Life is life. It has highs and lows. I understand that so I don’t get hung up on the small stuff.

One thing I noticed however was release days REALLY take it out of me. It’s got to the point where I can’t watch my ranking, reviews, or even sales on my dashboard. I think this is just neurotic stupid behaviour so will work on that, but at the same time, I think it’s a good reminder to just enjoy the fact that I finished yet another book, rather than stressing if people are buying or enjoying.  I can’t control that part. But I can control how I celebrate by finishing another novel. (Drinking mainly)

Overall, as I look back on 2015, I remember the highs (like buying the land with hubby. Of boarding the flight to the USA and meeting so many wonderful people. Of bidding successfully on this house we truly wanted and winning) and feel so freaking lucky. So many amazing things happened this year that it definitely trumps any small niggles I might’ve endured along the way.

giphy (11)

TRUTHS OF 2015

Last year, I treated this section as the honesty box of what I did or didn’t do. I’ll be honest again as I believe in sharing rather than hiding away.

I learned something new about myself.

I’ve always known I was best in small groups and quiet situations. However, I didn’t know how much of an introvert i was until I did the 2 month signing tour in the USA. It wasn’t so much the signing or long weekends of parties and get togethers, but more what would happen afterward. I would literally become a zombie. I couldn’t think. I could barely talk. I stopped sleeping. I barely wanted to eat. I felt very strange. I became totally drained and useless. It really showed how hard it is for me to be in an extrovert while internally, I’m freaking out.

Because here is another truth: I get NERVOUS AS HELL meeting incredible readers and authors. I get blown away that people want to meet me. Me? I don’t understand why. I mean, I just wrote a book in my pyjamas. (Hardly glamorous) I get tongue-tied. I worry that I let people down. That I’m not cool enough to warrant the long line ups, amazing gifts, and photo bombs. That all takes a strain and once I left the high of the signings, I turned into a wreck. I was left drained, not by others, but by my feeling of ‘not being out-going enough, not being witty, clever, smart, pretty, appreciative enough’. I know I’m not explaining it very well but it was something that really struck home and I’m going to work hard on being more confident in large groups. (and doing my best not to become the zombie people have to kill at the start of a bad movie)

I still fear for the future.

I LOVE MY JOB. I’ll say it again as it’s beyond the truth. I LOVE WRITING, PUBLISHING, EVERYTHING TO DO WITH BOOKS. I’m living the ultimate dream and I hope it never ever goes away. However, no one can promise that and the market changes so quickly that I have to be realistic and plan for the worst. I’ll be writing for the rest of my life (I can’t not write) I just hope there will always be a market where people want to read my ramblings.

I still compare myself to others

Yep, last year was the same issue. I think in this day and age, it’s hard not to. But I did learn how to no longer feel that guilt to try harder, regret that I didn’t work faster, and drive myself insane with the need to do more more more. I’ve had to take stock and really be honest with myself. What makes life your life? YOU and what you do. Not others and you can’t be whoever you’re comparing yourself to. Not only does it takes away from the gains you’ve achieved on your own but it layers unnecessary stress on trying to do something that isn’t your life path. So, I’ve given myself the permission to tread my road and no longer force myself to do more than what I want to. At the end of the day, life is way too short and just living in the moment is the only way to be happy. (it happens that I LOVE my moments and after giving myself permission to take the morning off to have brunch with hubby or calling quits early to go for a walk—it’s all 100% more rewarding when you acknowledge that you deserve it and not carrying around the guilt that you should be working)

giphy (10)

GOALS FOR 2015

I want to run most days and do the Five Tibetans that Hugh Howey demonstrates on his blog and does religiously.

After sitting on my butt for two years writing, my lower back is starting to feel it and I’m determined not to be a hunchback when I’m fifty. I’m investing time and energy into being healthy and fit. Not to mention I get some great plot ideas when I’m on the treadmill so it’s not a hardship (although getting out of bed and in the mood to run is hard most days. I need a sexy personal trainer to keep me motivated. Oh wait…I have my hubby to do that.)

I want to become a vegetarian.

I’ve been slowly going off meat for years. I’ve never liked lamb or venison, and only once a year have a steak when I’m feeling low on iron, and find chicken breast bland no matter how you dress it up. I would much rather a big bowl of roasted pumpkin and feta with nuts and salad than a BBQ where multiple animals had to die. Another reason for this is I’ve had a house rabbit for the past eight years. I LOVE this little bunny almost as much as I love my husband (that’s okay to say because he feels the same way. The damn rabbit gets more kisses than I do) however, she’s really taught us how to be empathetic toward animals that are naturally prey and food for most predators. I’ve always been close to animals (raising birds, bunnies, cats, dogs, mice, hamsters, etc. in my childhood) but it’s getting harder and harder to condone the inhumane treatment of not just meat animals but also dairy, eggs production, and other livestock. Most establishments treat animals with respect and I love that free range is becoming more and more demanded than caged, but we still have a LONG way to go toward the suffering of others. I won’t harp on about this as it’s not my intention to preach but it’s my choice to slowly phase out meat and animal products entirely because I don’t want to think about killing for my needs.  (this breaks my heart as I love leather handbags but I’m on a mission)

I want to open a charity.

I’ve been thinking about this for a while. I’m a firm believer in karma and giving back. I love to gift (find it more satisfying than receiving for sure) however, (and this might be the sceptic in me) but a lot of large charity organisations have so much overhead charges and staff to pay that a lot of donations are used on things I don’t necessarily approve of. If I donate a $1000 to prevent cruelty toward dogs, then I want $1000 to go to that charity not overheads and incidentals. The only way to ensure the full profit goes to those in need are either to directly donate to societies that accept face to face donations or start my own. I have no idea how to go about this yet but this is my next endeavour and look forward to giving back to a world that has been so generous with me.

giphy (14).gif

MATERIAL GOALS OF 2015

Last year my three goals were:

I want the indebted series to be optioned as a TV series (didn’t happen. This will be a long term hope) Look at the Outlander Series. It took Diana Gabaldon 20 years but it happened.

Sell more foreign rights (growing and so far I’m happy with the progress)

Hit Wall Street journal (Did it. Twice. Wahoo!)

New Goals:

Renovate our new house side by side with my hubby and fully embrace how amazing our life has become.

Travel just for us. (a trip to Bali or Koh Samui) 2015 was taken up with signing tours and we never got our chance to be stupid and drink overly sweet cocktails in the sunshine. (hubby and I treat our Asian vacations as the glue to our marriage. We love each other and spend every day together but holidaying in a fancy hotel with decadent food really sparks romance and reminds you why you fell in love.

I want to break out into new markets with my upcoming books. Unseen Messages is a completely different book from me and I hope people love it as much as I have enjoyed writing it.

And that’s it.

giphy (15)

Once again another epic post and if you got this far then thanks so much for reading! (do you need a drink top up?) How did you do with your goals from last year? Did you achieve what you hoped? What do you dream for in 2016?

I can’t thank you enough for turning my life into a daily joy and the happiest I’ve ever been. It’s thanks to you that 2015 was the kickass awesomeness that it was and it will be thanks to you that 2016 is even better.

I hope everything you wish for comes true.

Super Secret Series will start (possibly sooner…everything is up in the air currently) Once again, I’m DYING to show you these covers and aim to do so in the new year. To answer a few questions, there will be 5-6 books and follow the same characters, published quickly and close together. I’m in LOVE with these characters already and hope they soothe the hole left behind by Jethro and Nila .

BEG Cover

INDEBTED BEGINNINGS COVER REVEAL

The deeper I got into Jethro and Nila’s tale, the more I wanted to write the very beginning of the Debt Inheritance origin. William Hawk will share his story in a full length standalone coming in 2016.

GOODREADS

“It all began with greed and gluttony and ended with diamonds and guillotines. Debts were incurred, contracts were written, and a curse landed on the firstborns from both houses.”

William Hawk was born into a family with vengeance rather than blood flowing in his veins. Against all odds, he transformed himself from pauper to Lord of Hawksridge. He became a smuggler, king’s ally, and ruthless businessman. But he had flaws as well as triumphs.

It was those flaws that ruined his inheritance. Those flaws that saved him from himself. Those flaws that brought him the greatest wealth of all.

Her.

Do you want more Hawks? Do you want to know the deeper questions to the Debt Inheritance? Well, you’ve read Jethro and Nila’s tale, now go back to the very beginning and read William’s in INDEBTED BEGINNINGS.
