Dear Power FM Family

Looking back on it all, it’s still kind of crazy I ever got to be a part of the team at Power FM.

I’ve shared my story of coming to Power FM on the air a few times, so I won’t use much space on that here. The short version is that I was a fan of Power FM almost from the day it signed on the airwaves as a full-time station, got into radio because of how powerfully the music impacted me, and ended up looking for a job at the exact time that Power FM was in need of an afternoon DJ.

I’ll probably...

Christian Music Roundup – August 2015

Here we are at another month.August has felt ridiculously long, and I can’t figure out why. July should’ve been the long month with everything that went down. All I did in August is get mystitches out (leaving some sweet scars that magically didn’t ruin my tattoo) and release a book.

SHAMELESS SELF PROMOTION ALERT: The book is the second in a trilogy about pirates who harvest water illegally while trying to evade a corrupt government, mercenaries, and creepy monster-things. So if you’re the t...

The Hunted Playlist

On last year’s blog tour forThe Marian, one of my favorite posts I got to do was a playlist post over on BookCrushin. I got to talk about music that I like while simultaneously discussing different themes in my book, and it was awesome. As I prepare for the release of the next book in the trilogy, calledThe Hunted, I thought it would be fun to put together a similar post.

So here we go:

The Ongoing Concept – Soul

The Ongoing Concept is a wild band to listen to. At their heart, they’re a meta...

Second Books and Second Acts: The Secret Trilogy Trap

Holy geez, that’s a cutesy title. I’m not even sorry.

When I first sat down to write The Marian Trilogy, my plan wasn’t to write a trilogy. I just had a single novelin mind, but that plan went out the window when I finished what I thought was a solid exposition, only to find itwas almost as long as a full-length novel. At this point, I figured I had three choices:

1)Resign myself to writing a nearly 1,000-page young adult adventure novel. Sure, no one’s heard of me, and sure, it’s a soft scie...

Christian Music Roundup – July 2015

If this blog isn’t up to my usual standards, I’m going to go ahead and blame the entire month of July.

Seriously.

To be perfectly honest, the last few weeks have been some of the hardest I’ve been through in a long time. First, this happened:

Towards the beginning of the month, I was driving home from work. About ten minutes from my house on an interchange between two highways, I looked up and saw a pickup truckdriving across the median, headed straight for me.That’s literally the last clear...

Pirates and the Speculative Fiction Tree

Speculative fiction is a boring term for the big umbrella that covers all the“fantastical” genres of fiction. The three main branches of speculative fiction you hear about are science fiction, fantasy, and horror, thoughsome definitions addalternate history, post-apocalypse, and superhero to the list. I’d argue that those all fall pretty naturally as sub-genres under those main three.

Literature buffs will tell you speculative fiction is cool because of its ability to use these fantastical, o...

The Hunted Cover Reveal

Around a year ago, I released the first book in my post-apocalyptic pirate trilogy,The Marian. It was a story that had been rolling around in my head for a while before I even sat down to give it any shape. The story and the world havemorphed and grown as I’ve spent more time with them, and the whole thing hasturned into something I’m incredibly proud of.

If you’re not familiar with The Marian Trilogy yet, it’s – in a nutshell – a post-apocalyptic pirate adventure with elements of steampunk a...

Christian Music Roundup – June 2015

As I settle down to write about the albums I enjoyed this month, I need to be honest: I’m a little nervous.

Allow me to explain.

I’m not very familiar with the heavy/hardcore/metal scene. It wasn’t until recently that I’ve started getting into this world, and since I’m so newthe genre, it’s hard for me totalk intelligently about it. There areso many branchesoff the “heavy music” tree, and I can barely tell a difference between most. I think metal and hardcore are two different things, but I’v...

Length, Endings, and Loose Ends

I’ve started writing the final book in the Marian Trilogy.

This Thursday afternoon,I sat down and wrote the first thousand words of the conclusion to Ethan Denby’s journey. The second book in the trilogy is currently in the hands of my wife (who is actually an awesome beta reader) and a trusted author friend. If everything goes the way I expect, you should be able to pick up a copy of The Hunted this fall.

Anyway, I didn’t feel like sitting around and twiddling my thumbs while waiting for bet...

Christian Music Roundup – May 2015

Here we are once again. Another month has come and gone, and I’ve gone through another month’s releases. There weren’t a lot of surprises for me these last few weeks. The albums I expected to be great were, for the most part, pretty great. There were a few artists who hadn’t been on my radar that popped up with some stuff I really enjoyed, but not as many as in past months.

Anyway, let’s get to the recommendations:

Abandon Kansas–alligator

First of all, can we talk about how awesome this cov...
