Artist Scoop! ~Exclusive Interview with Natalie Villa

I remember when I first heard Natalie’s LOL song. I was blown away by it, and decided to follow this amazing artist. Fast-forward years after, I have the privilege of interviewing Natalie today, and presenting her inspiring words on TBAP!

Miranda ~ Hello Natalie! Delighted to have you visit TBAP today. Please tell us a bit about yourself.

 Natalie: Hello! Thank you so much for having me. So a little bit about me…I love Jesus, my husband, Marco, my two children, Destiny and Judah, and Dr. Pepper! I am also a fan of shopping and Starbucks. I am a girly girl to my core! I was raised in Las Vegas and, I currently live in Nashville. I love music and have been singing since I could talk.

Miranda ~ How did you become a Christian? Please tell us your story.

Natalie: Well, I was really blessed with an amazing, Godly mother who taught me about Jesus at a very young age. She modeled the love of God and a love for His word. I grew up knowing about the Lord and I asked Jesus into my heart, and was baptized at 5. The rest is history.

Miranda ~ Natalie, your songs are full of heart, faith, and fun. Please tell us, when and why did you decide to sing for God? What led to that moment?

Natalie: I love singing for God! I remember when I was 7 years old, a ministry group called Master’s Commission, came to my church. I remember seeing the passion they had for Jesus as they sang, did dramas, and preached. I knew from that moment that I wanted to spend my life doing the same thing—sharing the Gospel through the arts.

Miranda ~ Your latest release came out this year. What message do you hope to pass across to your listeners?

 Natalie: Yes! I just released my 2nd project in June, 2016, called Symphony. This was a very special project to me. The whole project carries a message of trust and surrender, especially the title track, Symphony. The Lord is faithful to take the broken pieces of our lives and the parts that feel out of tune, and then turn them into a masterpiece—His symphony. I hope people are encouraged to trust the Lord as they listen to every song.

Miranda ~ You have a long history with music. In what way has it grown you spiritually and how has it brought you closer to God?

 Natalie: I feel like I grow spiritually every time I sit at a piano to worship or write a song, because I normally write about what the Lord is doing in my life. It’s like therapy for me. Sometimes I will sing declarations, scriptures, or just be still and listen to the Holy Spirit. Music is definitely one of the ways the Lord speaks to me.

Miranda ~ In your own opinion, what are the misconceptions people in the world have about the music industry, especially in regards to hard work, fame, and the road to fame?

 Natalie: I think a lot of people see the façade of fame thinking that it is true success. True success is loving God, your family, and living in the purpose that He created for you. Another misconception I think people have about the music industry—and following the dream that the Lord has put in your heart in general—is that success happens overnight. The reality is that to be successful, you have to work very hard no matter what you are doing. You also have to TRUST the Lord and His timing. He is faithful; and as you follow Him, He will work out all the details. Don’t listen to the thoughts of failure or quitting just because you don’t see the results that you think you should see. The Lord’s timing is perfect.

Miranda ~ How is the Christian music industry different than the secular? Is there any advantage of one over the other?

 Natalie: Anytime there is a chance to do something for the Lord, I think that is an advantage! You can let your light shine wherever you are, secular or Christian. I think it just depends on where the Lord has called you to be. You need to know your calling.

Miranda ~ Where do you see the Christian music industry in the next five to ten years?

 Natalie: I hope the Christian music industry continues to grow in the worship movement that has happened over the last 20-30 years, and I also hope to hear more diverse music on Christian radio.

Miranda ~ Who are the people your heart writes for—those in despair, the broken-hearted, the lost etc.?

Natalie: I love writing for the Church, for people on the streets, and really for anyone who needs encouragement. A lot of my songs are based out of Scripture. The message in my first project, Fast Lane, was about faith and healing, and for my new project, Symphony, it is about trust. I hope anyone who listens feels like they can relate.

Miranda ~ Who are the people that have inspired/encouraged you the most? How have they done so?

 Natalie: The people that have inspired and encouraged me the most are my husband, Marco, and my family. I would never have been able to step out in faith to sing, write songs, and record, if it hadn’t been for them.

Miranda ~ In your opinion, why should a Christian with the talent to sing, go into music? How powerful do you believe music can be in impacting a person’s life, or better yet, the world?

 Natalie: I think you have to know your calling. If the Lord has given you a voice and you feel the pull from the Holy Spirit to pursue music, lead worship at your church, write songs or whatever you feel, then go for it! Music is one of the most powerful tools we have in our world. Songs can be life-changing. Step out and go for it! There is room for everyone.

Miranda ~ Who are the artists/producers you’ve worked with in the past? Are you working with any now? Who do you hope to work with in the future?

 Natalie: I’ve had the opportunity to work with one of my favorite people on the planet—artist and producer, Liquid. He produced my last project, Symphony, and half of my first project, Fast Lane. He is a musical genius and is one of the funniest people I know. I’ve also gotten to work with Derek Minor, and he is awesome! I would be so excited to work with them again, and anyone else the Lord connects me with.

Miranda ~ How has working with these artists/producers shaped you as an artist? What lessons have you learned along the way? How have these lessons shaped you as a person?

 Natalie: They have encouraged me to be better, dig deeper, and to never give up! I think the biggest lesson I have learned personally is to trust the Lord more.

Miranda ~ What are you most grateful for—generally and in the present?

Natalie: I am most grateful and thankful for my family—for my wonderful husband, Marco, my miracle children, Destiny and Judah, and all my family members. The most important thing to me is family, and I am so thankful for them. They are my biggest blessings.

Miranda ~ Natalie, is there a word you’d like to offer—anything at all!—that wasn’t covered by the questions above? And, what word of wisdom would you offer to an artist venturing into the music industry for the first time?

 Natalie: Never despise small beginnings, and don’t be afraid to trust the Lord. Step out! God is faithful, and as you delight yourself in the Lord, He will give you the desires of your heart (Psalms 37). He loves you so much!!!! Xoxo

Actor Scoop! ~ Interview with Luciano J. Vignola

Luciano Vignola is both an actor in film and theater, as well as a musician, and has been in the entertainment business for quite a while. He recently starred in the short film, Children of War by APOLONIAD Productions. It is my pleasure to have a sit down with him today, and get to know him a little better. Join us in our chat below and learn more about Luciano.

Miranda ~ Hello Luciano! Glad to have you visit TBAP today. Please tell us a bit about yourself.

Luciano: I was born and raised in Bohemia, New York.  I come from a one hundred percent Italian family.  I began studying the art of drumming at the age of five, and then at the age of eight, I began my career as a drummer for a pop/rock group.  At thirteen, my family relocated to Nashville to pursue greater opportunities for that group. And then at seventeen, I was blessed with the opportunity to study at Lipscomb University, with a focus in acting.  Upon graduation, I began my journey, and have been blessed with many different experiences in both my field of acting, and in everyday life, itself.

Miranda ~ Are you a Christian and, how did you become a one? Tell us your story.

Luciano: Yes I am.  At the age of seven, my mother accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her Savior.  Through reading the Bible, and learning about the many Biblical heroes, I discovered I wanted to be just like them.  Sometime during the age of seven or eight, I decided to follow in my mom’s footsteps and accept Jesus as my Savior.

Miranda ~ You’re into acting. How did it all begin?

Luciano: As a kid, I did a few auditions.  Several industry people had seen my drumming, and saw me as a TV talent as well.  I wasn’t really too crazy about it.  It wasn’t until I was fifteen when I started seeing real film and hard-hitting motion pictures, that I developed this love for acting, storytelling and directing!  I became set on being an actor.  I chose Lipscomb because it was local, and they had a startup program that needed actors.  I knew nothing, but I figured they were new, too, so they would use me.

Miranda ~ What led you to decide to go into Christian film acting as opposed to secular? Or do you work in both industries?

Luciano: I actually act in both industries.  It’s an interesting mix.  There are certain roles that I will not accept, and I’m very much into redemptive stories; whether it’s a Christian film or a secular one, I’m all for the deep-rooted worlds.

Miranda ~ In what ways is the Christian film industry different from the secular? Do you think there’s room for improvement in the Christian film industry?

Luciano: Christian film and secular film differ very much in content and believability. Secular film isn’t afraid to take it to a realistic place. With that being said, I believe it’s important to filter what is essential to tell the story, and what is not.  On the flip side, Christian films have excellent morals, standards, and are usually safe to watch, but it lacks on believability and story structure.  I think as Christians, we play it safe at times, and strictly cater to our own audiences.

Miranda ~ How has your journey so far in acting/filmmaking helped develop you spiritually?

Luciano: Honestly, I can’t say that acting has made me a stronger Christian. It could be a culmination of the projects that I’ve worked on as well as my relationship with God at the moment that I was involved.  But a goal of mine is to always bring a positive and encouraging vibe to every set.

Miranda ~ What has been your experience on the Children of War set? How has it made you a better actor/person?

Luciano: Working with Apolonia was AMAZING.  She is so talented and creative.  Working on the Children Of War set was very exciting and full of awesome and upbeat people.  We all met the first day of shooting and became a family when it ended.  Everyone contributed to the story.  If we didn’t understand something, then we would talk it out.  The role was a stretch for me because I am not a Southerner, nor have I ever been a Coalminer.  The research about the city of War was fascinating, and it painted a picture of struggling families.  I worked on my southern accent with a dear friend of mine, Steve Alberts (the character, Slavy Freeman).  The work stretched me, and caused me to dig deeper to make it real for me.  Lots of fun it was!

Miranda ~ The role you played in Children of War, has it inspired you personally—if so, then how so?

Luciano: The role of the character, Les, shines light onto the sons/daughters who stick around with a parent(s) into their old age.  It’s like the older son in the Prodigal Son story from the Bible.  The younger son walked away, but the older son remained to help take care of everything.  Les is that to me.  He speaks support, love, and protector.  In a way, I think he also wants to live up to his Father’s will to keep going.

Miranda ~ What do you hope viewers of this movie will walk away with?

Luciano: Forgiveness.  I think it’s important for the viewers to make the connection that it’s not about the past.  It’s about the present, and the return of a family member that has messed up.  It’s about celebrating that return.

Miranda ~ Are you part of any film project right now? May we have a sneak peek?

Luciano: I am currently working on a TV show called American Super Group!  It airs on Pop, MTV Live, and MTV Classic.

Miranda ~ What are you most grateful for—generally/presently?

Luciano: I am most grateful for my Savior, Jesus Christ; He has brought many blessings into my life that I would never have encountered if it wasn’t for Him.  He is amazing and truly loves me!  The second blessing that I am most grateful for, is my fiancée, Kelly, and our son, Kamden.  They are both life to my day.  Kelly is the strongest, most hard working person I know, and she inspires me to push harder every day!  Kamden knows exactly how to put a smile on my face, and his love is so precious!  He teaches me that the simplest things are what truly matter most.

Miranda ~ How would you describe your experience as an actor as opposed to what you expected it to be before you started acting, especially in regards to fame and hard work?

Luciano: Acting is definitely a hard job.  The common thought is that you just simply say your lines and then you’re done.  There is such a craft and an art that goes into acting. As far as becoming famous, I think that depends on who you are, and what you define as your point of success. If fame is the goal, then the artist will not get far.  Love for the craft is what ultimately pushes the artist into the spotlight because, they refuse to allow a No to stand in the way of what they live to do.

Miranda ~ What advice would you give to anyone venturing into the industry for the first time?

Luciano: Really think about what you want—why do you want it? Can you live without it? Do you have a plan B set in place? “Plan Bs” are double-edged swords.  The thought is that, if you have a plan B, then you will automatically default when Plan A fails, so therefore never have a plan B so that Plan A can’t fail.  I’m torn with this because, if an actor gets burned out, and decides after 10 to 15 years that things aren’t working, and so no longer wants to live the stressful life of an actor, then they have no other skill in their tool belt that will feed them.  Plan Bs offer a safety net just in case the career of an actor takes a turn for the worst.  It would be much better falling into the backup plan of Plan B (doctor, teacher, accountant, corporate world, director etc.), than being stuck working a job that forces you to live paycheck to paycheck.

In the end I encourage anyone who has a dream to go for it! Dream big, live your dream, and strive for it.  But I also encourage you to think smart.

Reunions, Anniversaries & Callings

As I write, I’m winging my way to my 25th reunion at George Fox University. I happened to graduate in their centennial year, so this is also the university’s 125th anniversary.

I’m looking forward to it for all the typical reasons: seeing old (well, not too old) friends and professors, and seeing improvements to the campus. I’m really looking forward to running the Foxtrot 5k with my brother!

But I get a great bonus for this reunion! I get to perform for the current students in their chapel, in the very auditorium where I saw a one-man play for the first time.  Now, performing one-man plays has become a major component of my 21-year career in the performing arts. I don’t know if I’ll inspire anyone to build a career on one-person plays, but I am praying I’ll inspire them to do anything, and go anywhere that the Lord will call them to go.

Here’s how it all went down…

During one of my performances for the students, I walked out into the audience and showed them where I was sitting (I don’t remember the exact seat, but I certainly remember the section) when a chapel speaker called us—the students at the time—to come to the front if we were willing to do anything, and go anywhere that the Lord would call us to go. I sat down in a seat in that section, and then I leaped to my feet! You see, my grandparents had been missionaries to Kenya, so I was ready to go to Timbuktu! But on the way down the aisle (I showed them where it happened), I slowed my pace and said, “Lord, I’m willing to go anywhere, but could you please not make it a big city?” You see, I was raised on a 70 acre farm in Southern Oregon, so I was really intimidated by cities… with more than a few thousand people.

Later in the program, I shared that I now live in New York City, the largest city in North America. Our apartment is a couple of blocks from Times Square—the crossroads of the world. NYC has more Irish than Dublin, more Italians than Rome, more Jewish people than Jerusalem and, I… absolutely love it!

Nathan Herbold, who was on our film crew for a short film I was in, recently filmed a documentary for his church about their pastor, Wilber Boatwright. I told Nathan about one of the highlights of the documentary that struck me the most, and it turned out that it was Nathan who’d made that particular observation to his pastor, who then repeated it in the documentary! Nathan said that the connection came from sitting under his pastor’s teaching. I shared this same insight with the students in the chapel: When Jesus Christ was crucified, the veil in the temple was ripped from the top to the bottom. In that culture, as today in some Jewish communities, a father rips his shirt from top to bottom when his son dies. So God, the Father, was ripping His shirt, and allowing us into the Holies of Holies, from which we had been separated by the temple veil. Only the high priest was allowed into the Holy of Holies once a year. But when God ripped that veil, He invited us to enter into His presence through the death and resurrection of His Son.  So here’s what struck me: Nathan observed that we all have veils covering parts of our lives, but when we crucify self—when we die to self—we rip the veil that covers the places in our hearts and minds that we don’t allow anyone to see. When we do that, deep calls out to Deep, and we can finally and truly understand who we were created to be.

I asked the students to consider what the Lord was calling them to do. Throughout the chapel, I performed sketches of Jonah, Gideon and Lazarus, and I pointed out how God asked those people—people like us—to rip the veils in their lives, and do things that were way out of their comfort zones. But you know what, nothing great was ever achieved in a comfort zone. So I challenged them, as I challenge you now: “Step out in obedience, and watch what the Lord can do through you!”

That particular performance happened to fall on another landmark anniversary—the day I proposed to my wife, Joyce. I told the students, “Nineteen years ago from today, I said to my then fiancée, getting down on one knee, ‘Joyce Ann Hansen, will you follow the Lord wherever He calls us?’” I’d identified with that college altar call so much that I worked it into my marriage proposal! Thankfully, she said then (and she did again, from the lighting booth), ‘Yes!’ To the students I said, “Now I have a different kind of proposal for you: If you’re willing to say yes to anything the Lord asks you to do, and are willing to go anywhere  that He’ll call you to go, then come on down front; I’d like to pray for you.”

At first there was no movement, but I was raised Evangelical Quaker, so I’m used to silence. I just began praying silently that they would come to a point, someday, where they would be ready to answer that kind of a challenge. Then someone stood. Hurrah! I thought: “We’ll pray over that one.” But then, another person stood, too. I actually thought the second student was making way for the first to get past, but that student started toward the aisle as well. Then more. And more. Suddenly, there was an eruption! Hundreds of students got to their feet and came down front. (I’m weeping right now as I write this.) The students did something that I didn’t ask of them—it didn’t matter that they were packed at the altar or in the aisles; they all knelt, offering themselves to the Great High King.

I thank the Lord, not only for those hundreds who came forward, but also for all of the souls that they’ll touch in the course of their lives and ministries, whether they were called to be pastors, performers or engineers.

If you’re ready to say to the Lord that you’ll do anything, and you’ll go anywhere that He’ll call you to go, then stand up. Yeah! Actor Scoop ~ Interview with Paloma Pilar

I’ve had the honor of hosting writer, director, and film producer, as a guest on TBAP, is Paloma Pilar, the lead actress in Children of War. She is sweet and exciting to get to know! Follow our chat below and learn more about this wonderful woman!

Miranda: Hello Paloma! Glad to have you visit TBAP today. Could you please tell us a bit about yourself?

Paloma: Hi Miranda! Thank you so much for inviting me to be a part of this wonderful platform you’ve built; I am truly honored. I’ll have to admit that I always get a little awkward talking about myself—haha—but the spirit of getting to know each other makes this a little easier!

I am a multifaceted young woman who lives and works in NYC as an actress, singer, dancer, fitness professional and, skincare enthusiast! I was born in Fairbanks, Alaska, to the most loving mother you will ever meet, who is also the greatest multi-tasker I know, because she was a full time mom of three girls and, a full time Commissioned Officer in the US Air Force (never falling short in either roles ;-)). I was raised a “military brat”—very cliché—so we traveled a lot. For that, I, therefore, know all of the states’ slogans by heart. Ha! I’m also a NYC 2012 tri-athlete, I ride motorcycles, I’m obsessed with puppies (and I do I mean obsessed), dabble in gymnastics, do math in my free time and, I LOVE love!

Miranda: Are you a Christian? If so, when did you first discover God and come to Him personally?

Paloma: I was born and raised Roman Catholic, and I live out my faith. My mother taught me from a young age, the value of having a faith walk and a personal one-on-one relationship with God! My beliefs and my faith are the sole reasons for all of the love in my heart.

Miranda: When did you discover your talent for acting, and more importantly, when did you decide to use it for Christian acting or do you work in the secular industry as well?

Paloma: I have always had a passion for the arts. I remember going to my older sisters’ middle and high school productions, and getting lost in the magic of what I was seeing on stage. Equally, I remember watching my mom perform in Passion plays at our chapel, and loving how she fully immersed herself in the telling of each story. Memories like these remind me of how I have always been exposed to the arts—both secular and Christian—so I do not limit myself to one or the other. If I believe in a story, I will do everything I can to make it real, and live it truthfully on screen or on stage!

Miranda: Could you tell us the story of your journey into film? How did it all begin?

Paloma: My journey into film began relatively recently, as I have been predominantly pursuing art in the theatre the past few years. In 2014, I joined a new acting school called Playhouse West Brooklyn Lab, under Jim Parrack and Andrea Dantas.  There, I met other actors well versed in the art of film, and together, we combined our talents with our passion for learning, and began making short films! My excitement for film is growing every day.

Miranda: How has becoming an actress grown you spiritually? What lessons have you picked up along the way?

Paloma: Hmm, that’s a great question. I think that my time training and working as an actress has required me to look deeper into myself as a person. It is a process of self-discovery and, I spent a lot of time in prayer to reach beyond the surface of myself. It’s been quite a journey, but more and more, I am developing my voice and my point of view of the world, my craft, and my beliefs! I don’t think I’ll ever want to stop learning!

Miranda: In your experience, what misconceptions do people have about the world of entertainment, especially in regards to a career that can lead to fame?

Paloma: I believe that a huge misconception people have about acting as a career path is that, it is not a noble profession. Another is that, because it lacks “job security,” it is unworthy of pursuit for practical reasons. However, to me, that is fear masked as “practicality.” In my opinion, fame does not define success. I have seen the work of some of the finest actors of this generation whose names are not widely known and, that in no way makes them unsuccessful. Success isn’t being an A-list celebrity. It is working your craft passionately every day, and never letting fear stop you from ever attempting to live your dream.

Miranda: In your opinion, as an actress (and as a Christian if you’re one), what principles do you believe help sustain a person in a career like acting? What principles sustain the career itself?

Paloma: It takes work and dedication to sustain everything. Growing up, my mom taught me that working smart is better than working hard (not to be confused or dismissive with strenuous work), and that you are NEVER too busy to do what you want to do. In a career like acting, I think it is absolutely necessary to hone your craft and, build a strong foundation and approach. Probably, the greatest decision I ever made for my career was, studying at Playhouse West Brooklyn Lab, where I developed my foundation and approach. One valuable lesson from my teachers was that, “you cannot act what you do not know.” To have a long healthy career, you need to get smart! Haha! Gain as much knowledge as possible and, develop standard for yourself. Read as much as you can—books, plays etc.—study the greats, study LIFE, and, strengthen your ability to expand your imagination.

Miranda: What other actors/actresses have you worked with in the past? What has the experience been like, and, what lessons have you gained from working with them?—any interesting story in particular?

Paloma: I have been blessed to work with a lot of people in this industry. I just spent two years with a group of people who have become my artistic family! I completed my program back in June, and was able to stand beside eleven of the most passionate individuals I’ve ever met. We had a lot of highs and lows together, but we all stuck it out because we believe in the contribution we can make to this art form, and, we have no plans of shortcutting our way through.

Miranda: What producers/directors have you worked with? What wisdom did you gain from them that has helped your career?

Paloma: One of the greatest producers/directors I have ever worked with is Apolonia Davalos. She is devoted to her art, and aims for truth in her work. There is a difference between a director who wants to make a pretty picture, and a director who wants to portray real life! She is the goods.

Miranda: How would you describe your experience on the Children of War set, and how has the role you played in the movie inspired you personally?

Paloma: My experience on set was so beautiful. Again, Apolonia created such a warm environment where the cast and crew could work together to make it all happen. We shot everything in less than 24 hours, so we needed to work together! Playing the character, Saint, was a gift; when I read the script for the first time, I could not wait to get to work!

Miranda: What do you hope to impart when viewers watch you on screen?

Paloma: Truth!

Miranda: What are you most grateful for—generally/presently?

Paloma: I am most grateful for my faith and my family. My faith is my life. Because of it, I love unconditionally, and so, fully. My mother, my two sisters, and my fiancé are the reasons why I smile. The love I share with all of them is divine, and I am so thankful that God gave us each other.

Miranda: Are you involved in any film project right now? If you are, what’s it about, and, when can we expect it?

Paloma: Right now, I am in the development stage of a few projects, both for film and theater. I am actually writing a screenplay that has been on my heart for the past year. It is in the very early stages but, I will be sure and update you and your readers as it comes to fruition!

Artist Scoop! ~ Interview with Satellites & Siren’s Geoff Hunker

The band, Satellites & Sirens, has been in the music scene since 2006, and with each release, they are getting more heard. Their latest album, TANKS, is being released today  (you can also read the TBAP review here), and so if you’re in the mood for some good music, you can follow the buy link, and download your copy.

Also, today, the lead singer and founder of the band, Geoff Hunker, is with us on TBAP. Follow our chat below and learn more about this awesome band!

Miranda ~ Hello Geoff! Glad to have you visit TBAP today. Please tell us a bit about yourself.  Also, why did your band choose the name, Satellites and Sirens?

Geoff ~ My name is Geoff. I am the lead singer, and the one who started S&S. I am married and I have two dogs. I’m currently living in Arizona and, besides being a member of the band, I am a worship leader at Chandler Christian Church. The name, Satellites & Sirens, came from the idea that satellites are devices that send information out, and sirens get people’s attention. That’s how I see us, Christians—we have something that people need to hear and, we need to get their attention.

Miranda ~ How did you become a Christian? Tell us your story.

Geoff ~ I grew up in a Christian home. My parents always took me to church and, also, I was in multiple youth groups that met on different nights. Even though I was baptized when I was 13, it was when I moved away to college that I made my relationship with God my own, and chose to be a follower of Christ.

Miranda ~ How did your music career begin?  How did the band come together and, what led you to decide to go into Christian ministry as opposed to secular? Also, how does the band work—does each member have a special function?

Geoff ~  It started for me when I moved to Nashville. I was in bands growing up when I lived in Oregon, but when I moved to Nashville, I got involved with a management company that worked for artists/bands, and this allowed me to meet a lot of people. In that time I met Rusty Varenkamp, who wrote some songs with me, and then took a chance and introduced me to Jason Ingram and Conor Farley, who were at Word Records. I, actually, was signed before there was a band, so I went to where everyone goes to find something they need—Craigslist! There, I met drummer, Jonathan Dimmel, who was connected to the now, members, of the band.

Christian music just made sense to me. I had a conversation at the start of the band with Rusty, and he said that I needed to decide which way to go—it was one way or the other. God gave me the gifts that I have, and so I chose to use them to glorify Him. Not that you couldn’t do that on the secular side of things, but I felt called to make good music for the kingdom.

All the guys have their role to play in the band. Dave, our current drummer, is very tech savvy, so he tackles a lot of that; one guy does the road management, and the other, social media. We all have our jobs.

Miranda ~ In what way is the Christian music industry different than the secular? Do you think there’s room for improvement in the Christian music industry?

Geoff ~ This is a big question. In my opinion, I think the two are very different. I think there is always room for improvement in anything, but I would love to see the Christian industry take more chances. We have a song on our new record called Stereo, and there is a line in the song which says, “shouldn’t we be setting the trends?” I am a firm believer that as Christians, we should be the ones pushing the envelope and setting the trends. God made us creative—and I’ll probably get torn apart for this—but I don’t see a lot of that in the Christian industry and, those who do get creative, don’t get heard. I want to see that change. There is so much great music out there—creative music with something to say—and I wish there was an outlet for that in the Christian industry.

Miranda ~ How has your journey so far in music helped grow your personal relationship with Jesus?

Geoff ~ I think my journey through music has strengthened my relationship with Jesus because I can’t tell you how many ups and downs we’ve been through over the years. I have been in some of my favorite moments, and in some of the worst. And in the end, the only constant has been God—the only One you can truly rely on. In those low moments, all I could do was lean on Him to pull me through. Trials can bring us closer to God, and there have been countless trials through this journey.

Miranda ~ What has been your experience in the industry? How has it made you a better artist/person?

Geoff ~ The industry is an interesting place. First off, I think just being on the road so much, and playing so often, have made me a better musician. When you are using your craft, you can see it grow and change as you do. I also surrounded myself with amazing musicians who pushed me to be better, because I didn’t want to embarrass myself! Ha! The industry, also, has taught me how important good friends are; it is hard to make real relationships in the industry. People easily get the feeling that you want something from them, and it breeds a bunch of stand-off people. But I have come across some real genuine people that want the best for you, as much as they want for themselves. I have made some friends that get what it’s like out there, and can vent with me, pray, and encourage me along the way. That has taught me to be the same towards them and others. And, so I, too, love helping artists who are just getting started.

Miranda ~ What misconceptions do people have about the music industry, especially in regards to hard work, money, and the road to fame?

Geoff ~ There are so many misconceptions. For example, in 2014, we had our most successful year on paper. Jumpstart My Heart was number 5 on billboard. We had a number 1 in Australia, and we were on one of the big tours of the spring that sold out most dates on the tour with Building 429, Hawk Nelson, and Family Force 5. On paper it looked amazing! But that was the worst financial year for the band. Ha! The more success you get, the more bills you have to pay. People don’t really realize this. Also, we constantly have to bring it—looking, pushing, and fighting to get our music heard. It’s not easy. We literally spend tons of money and time to make a product that doesn’t sell anymore. So you have to find other ways to bring in the money. You have to live on the road, and you have to run a business in the midst of it all. It is tough, and we have slept on our share of floors eating only Taco Bell because it’s cheap! I wouldn’t trade it for anything, but it’s much harder than people understand.

Miranda ~ Have you worked with any other artists/producers? Who do you hope to work with in the future?

Geoff ~ We have had the blessing of working with Jon Steingard from Hawk Nelson, on our last record. He produced a couple of songs, as well as wrote a couple with me, and then sang on the record.  Joel Vaughn also sang and wrote on the upcoming release. Jonathan Thulin helped write the title track, TANKS, and we had the opportunity to work with an upcoming artist, Ronnie Petkovich, who, by the way, is going to be an amazing artist. I am currently working with him on his new record. We also had the opportunity to work with Duncan Sparks; he produced one of the songs. So my crazy outlandish dream would be to work with Ryan Tedder. He blows me away as a writer/producer, and I would love to sit down with him sometime. I also love the Abandon Boys, and would love a chance to produce/write some songs with them. There are a lot of legit people in the industry that I’d love to work with.

Miranda ~ S&S’s latest release, TANKS, dwells so much on love. What, precisely, do you hope listeners will walk away with?

Geoff ~ There a few things I’d like people to walk away with. I want us as Christians to stop trying to be right all the time, and to choose instead, to love. We live in a hateful world, and in proverbs 25 it says, “If your enemy is hungry, feed him.” I’d love to see what would happen if we chose to feed our enemies instead of argue with them. I want to remind people of what it was like to dream—when we really believed that faith could move mountains. And I want people to see that it’s okay to be a Christian, and still write a love song! Ha!

Miranda ~ As a music artist, what advice would you give to anyone venturing into the industry for the first time?

Geoff ~ Be who you are, make art that you are proud of and, whether you do your art in the Christian world or secular, keep your focus on God. He is the only constant. The journey is going to be a roller coaster, but trust that God will do awesome things. Best advice I was given was that, God can breathe life into whatever He chooses; there is no formula. No matter what people may say, God can do what He wants. We just need to keep being focused, and keep running the race.

About Satellites & Sirens

In 2008, when Nashville-based, Satellites & Sirens singer, Geoff Hunker, was looking to start a band, he did what any person might do—put out a Craigslist ad. It was at the very first round of auditions that he found drummer, Jonathan Dimmel, who had only moved to Nashville five months prior. It didn’t take long to round out the band with guitarist, David Troyer, and former bassist Brandon Owens. Within a year of that first Craigslist ad, S&S not only had a record deal with Word/Warner Bros, but they completed their first full length record. Their self-titled debut was released in March 2010, and was a critical success, garnering two Dove Award nominations for Rock Recorded Song of the Year and Rock/Contemporary Album of the Year. In July 2010, they were prominently featured as MTV’s Needle In a Haystack artist—the first time any artist on Word had ever been pursued by MTV.

Despite their early success, by January 2011, they found themselves without a label. Due to a shakeup in management at Word, they were left on the cutting room floor. Unwilling to accept defeat, the band raised money for a new record through Kickstarter. They also found new bassist, Dave Willey, a childhood friend of Dimmel’s. In Nov. 2011, they released their sophomore effort, Frequency, to rave reviews. Taking off where their first record left off, this record can best be described as more—more rock, more dancey, more worshipful, more personal. It was again, a critical success.

2012 found S&S working harder than ever, as they toured relentlessly in support of Frequency.  Late summer 2012, they also released a surprise record aptly titled, The Covers, an ambitious cover album featuring S&S’s own arrangements and versions of major hits by artists as varied as Taylor Swift, John Mayer, One Direction, Skillet, Maroon 5, and Chris Tomlin. The record quickly became a fan favorite, as the S&S boys also put out a video on YouTube for every song on the record. The videos showed a range of creativity, humor, and poignancy that had yet to be seen from the band.

The year of 2013 can best be described as a year of touring and writing, writing, writing, and more writing. The band was determined to write their best record to date. While pulling from their love for worship, pop, and rock music, they wrote a 12-song record, One Noise, which equally represented those influences well. Teaming up with their brand new label, Dream Records, and with the help of some noted Nashville songwriters and producers, S&S succeeded in crafting a record that was sure to turn the heads of the industry, as well as the buying audience.  From the ultra-catchy hooks of Jump Start My Heart, to the mellow worship of We Are Yours, to the electronic laden Keep Running, Satellites & Sirens was sure to find a quickly growing fan base.

2014 and 2015 were years spent on the road and the studio. It all started with the We Won’t Be Shaken tour, where S&S played sold-out shows with Building 429, Hawk Nelson, and Family Force 5, all across the US as their single Jump Start My Heart climbed the Hot AC/CHR charts all the way to #5, and #1 in Australia. This led them to a tour in Australia, even headlining one of the nights of the Forest Edge Music Festival. Then came the writing. S&S had been writing for more than a year for its upcoming, fourth, full length record, TANKS.

“This record is different, but familiar. It’s fun, but challenging; it’s roll the windows down and cruise, and close the door and think,” says Geoff.

This is the band’s favorite record to date, with feel good songs like Who We Are and Waste Some Time, to the pop hooks of Old Souls and Chasing Photos, to the power and call-to-action of the new single, TANKS. This upcoming fourth record brought the band out of its comfort zone, and into another release that will make some waves in the industry.

Woman In Film: Why I’m An Actress and Filmmaker

 

I am a woman of and in film! What does this mean to me? I live, breathe, and think film in all that I do. It means that potentially working 12 to 16 hour for days, back-to-back, actually excites me and gets me up in the morning. It means that every second of the day, amidst my many tasks at hand, I’m concocting stories to bring to life through the silver screen (and developing the team to execute it).

Why film?

Reason One: because I’m a visual learner. And I know I’m not the only one!  (Laughs)

Why film?

Reason Two: because I can exercise more than one skill at a time. (I’ll give you a specific example shortly.) Furthermore, the community of talents that are collectively of the same mind in bringing a single concept to fruition is extraordinary—an intricate, complex, and beautiful 3-D puzzle made up of abundant pieces and moving parts coming together to achieve and complete an original and exclusive image! There is nothing like it, for all walks of life and divisions of craft are required to successfully reflect life itself!

Why film?

My reasons continue: we are the sum of our experiences and, I love escaping outside of myself and into the shoes of a character in front of the camera, or being the Director/Director of Photography behind the camera. Seeing life with new eyes re-invigorates my passion for film.

As a fan of film, I have a respect and love for the structure that every genre has to offer! My latest adventure was on set of the horror feature film, Fearsville 2!

Remember when I mentioned executing more than one skill at a time? Well, I got to walk my talk for Director, . I served as his 2nd Assistant Director, 2nd Camera Operator and Boom Operator (for select scenes), and also, as Supporting Actress where I portrayed the high school teacher, Angela Cole. I was, and still am presently, honored to have trust to execute his vision as a member of the crew and the cast—a trust that I hold near and dear to my heart!

The cherry on TOP of the cherry on top (that’s some sweetness!), was the freedom to also aid in choreographing one of the final stunts in the film. I’m an action chic! I was trained in stage combat and performed in a handful of “Fight Nights” during my theater and film education in New York City. So I instantly relish, jump, leap, kick, and capture any opportunity to do stunts!

Truth? The beauty of it all (and therefore, revealing the magic behind independent filmmaking and the bond of the “film-family”) is that I originally signed on to be just an actress for the film. However, being eager to be on set in the earlier stages of filming—prior to my official shoot date and call-time and, inspired by what and his Producing partner and Director of Photography, , were accomplishing with such a low budget—I approached with these words, “I am at your service!” And, he didn’t hesitate to welcome and include me deeper into the creative and production process. With us, ego doesn’t exist. When we address each other, I call him brother and he calls me sister. Film life (career) is about relationships. Knowing that would literally risk his life just to get the perfect shot (note: the exclusive film-family has talked him out of a few dangerous but cool ideas and, instead, troubleshooted and enacted other inventive alternatives to these same said ideas. Haha!), I would do anything for this man! I’ve yet to meet a single soul who doesn’t love him.

We’ve relished in long days, longer nights, multiple locations (including off-grid locations with no cell-phone service [“Have fun getting to set!]), unforeseen surprises that transformed into blessings, and, the most supportive cast & crew you could ask for! In producing Fearsville 2, I am inspired by the fearlessness of White Door Productions! With positive ambition, and will have successfully written, produced, shot, edited, and premiered their horror feature film in a matter of months. I am just blessed to be along for this exciting ride, and to be valued as a filmmaker for my experience, skill, and insatiable willingness to learn (which is more so than just being a “woman-in-film”).

I’m honored and can’t wait for the red-carpet premiere of Fearsville 2 on Friday, October 28, 2016, at WK Cinemas in Hopkinsville, KY.

I love the supportive indie film network I have found which continues to grow, create, and prosper and, I am so blessed for every person and every personal journey shared along the way. I forget nothing and no one. There are so many paths and not one specific road to follow. Every soul has a story and, life does not allow itself to be dull because it lives and never stops (not even for time).

For me, film is a calling which I happily answer when it rings.

Lastly, as an active member of Tennessee Women in Film and Media (TWIFM), I’m looking forward to creating, sharing, and being involved in many more projects with high expectations to enlighten and enliven hearts. Film is a universal language. I don’t take this gifted platform for connection and building community for granted! I love film! Let’s shoot! ACTION!

Apolonia Davalos (AEA/ WIFT-Nashville and TWIFM Member) is a film and Off-Broadway theater director and actress. She is named after APPOLLONIA, an ancient, biblical town, in Macedonia, Greece, south of Lake Bolbe, known today as Nea Apollonia. Hence, she was born with a passion for God and love of history! Her upcoming short, modern-western film, Children of War, debuted through the film festival circuit in 2016. She is the Co-Writer and Co-Star of the online radio broadcast “The Baby Shug’s Show!” As an actor, her feature film credits include: “The Good Book” (on DVD), “Providence” (recently released in select AMC Theatres), “The Perfect Wedding” (on DVD), etc. In theater, she received great acclaim for the originated role of LYNN CORDERO in the Off-Broadway production of Looking for Billy Haines in Times Square (NYC). Other theater credits include: A Midsummer Night’s Dream (The Nashville Shakespeare Festival); Metamorphoses (The Boston Actors Theater): The Crucible (Salem Theatre Company); and Sisters of the Church (Afrikan Women’s Repertory Theatre). She is further recognized as a producer, director, writer, as well as an inspiring advocate for classical Greek theater through her production company APOLONIAD Productions. Known for her hearty laugh, talent for accents, love for martial arts, and singing classic 1930’s tunes!  “Apolonia Davalos is a passionate, young director dedicated to exploring the plays of Euripides. Review

The 12-track TANKS album begins with the lovely Hey! (This Is The Life), a wonderful symphony that would sway any listener with its amazing violin sounds. There’s a joyous quality to this particular song, which is a brilliant way to kick-start any album. The message in the lyrics is in harmony with the music, encouraging its listeners to truly live!

Clearly, the hearts and souls behind the music of TANKS can be heard in everything about it, and it bleeds love, faith, hope, joy, fun, and life—as God would have us have them. The voice of Satellites & Sirens is not afraid to speak God’s truth and spread His love and the message of the gospel, through music—this is what Christian singing is all about!

From the first song, Hey! (This Is The Life), to the last, Waste Some Time—and, with featured artists, Ronnie Petkovich and Joel Vaughn—there’s a promise of a good time and moments of spiritual uplifting! Look out for Old Souls—a deeply moving song (featuring Ronnie Petkovich), TANKS, which reminds us of the power of God’s love in us—the message that is clearly the main theme of the album, and, finally, Enough (featuring Joel Vaughn), which in my opinion, is the best in the ensemble.
