Joseph Pearce Racing the Devil
Here is my review of Joseph Pearce’s conversion story Race With the Devil: My Journey from Racial Hatred to Rational Love Pearce’s father had taught him to love England, the Queen, Shakespeare and everything English. A conservative wishes to conserve all that is good from the past and use it to build a positive present [Read More...]

Zmirak on Gimme Shelter
Over at Aleteia John Zmirak hands serves up a scorcher of a review of the new film Gimme Shelter. This is not some pious film produced by well-meaning pro-lifers and Bible-thumpers who borrowed a camera. It’s a mainstream Hollywood movie, produced by a team that made its bones on music videos, who blundered across a story [Read More...]

You Choose – Be Catholic or Be King
Did you know that one man had the choice–to be Catholic or to be King of England? The amazing story of James III of England goes like this: After the Protestant tyrant Elizabeth I there reigned James I (of King James Bible fame). He was succeeded by his son Charles I. Charles I married a [Read More...]

Early Morning Mass at St Peter’s
At 7:00am the activity at St Peter’s begins. The doors are opened and priests start to arrive at the basilica. I was with them yesterday and this morning. In our cassocks we converged on the great basilica and made our way to the splendid sacristy off the North aisle. There a cadre of boy altar [Read More...]

That Attack on the Pope’s Doves
I was in St Peter’s Square yesterday for the Angelus and witnessed the children releasing doves from the window of the Apostolic Palace with Pope Francis. Everyone gasped as a crow and a seagull swooped in to attack the pope’s doves. The Guardian has the story here. Was this an omen? Here is one interpretation: [Read More...]

Dealing with Divorce
Here is my latest article for Aleteia on the supposed rift between Cardinal Maradiaga and Archbishop Muller on the treatment of Catholics who are remarried after divorce. It makes the point that something needs to be done, but simply being nice to some ends up being nasty to others. What can be done when faced [Read More...]

Rome Away from Home
I finally have time to blog my trip to Rome. The travel here was terribly easy–terrible because it was so easy that I will be very tempted to do it more often. My son Theo dropped me at Greenville Spartanburg Airport for a short flight to Atlanta and a night crossing direct to Rome. The [Read More...]

Rome Sweet Home
I’m pretty excited to be visiting Rome for the first time as a Catholic priest. Not Rome for the first time, but the first time after my ordination in 2006. I have been invited to participate in a conference on Evangelization in the Media which takes place at the Columbus Hotel a stone’s throw from [Read More...]

Abortion, Cannibalism and Black Magic
Here in Washington for the March for Life, I thought I’d post this from the archives. Americans shouldn’t be under an illusions, despite our tidy and controlled society, despite our educations, sophistication and technology we are a people who sacrifice babies. The logic of child sacrifice in primitive societies was simple: the gods provided the [Read More...]
