REFLECTIONS IN ICELAND

♡
Lately I've been getting bored of routines. In my work, in my external relationships, in my internal relationship (most important oooone), in my personal life and hobbies, in my home city, in my house... I was sick and tired of being sick and tired. Suddenly heartbroken, emotionally lost, mentally ill and unstable, in my early 20's wondering what the POINT of it all is: I was in a rut. But through learning to embrace my own weaknesses and the unknown, I am on the road to finding my strength. In learning to accept my vulnerability, I have found a path to bravery. That's what this post is about. Plus dreamy pics of Iceland.

SPICED CHERRY SMOOTHIE BOWL with CHOCOLATE

Hi, all! Hope everyone is well and enjoying my previous post about my vegan guide to Montréal! It was a lot of fun to make and I plan to do something similar for most of the cities I visit on this trip. I am currently staying on a majestic farm just south of Edinburgh in Scotland. I couldn't be happier here. The people I am staying with are SO kind and generous. The land we're on is peaceful, surrounded by rolling fields and hills, rivers, valleys and grazing, gentle creatures like sheep, chickens, hares (I call them bunnies because when I see them I get really excited and turn into my 10-year old self), pheasants, horses and cows. Now more than ever I think somewhere like this is where I need to end up. It's ideal for my mental health and well-being. That being said, Edinburgh is a rad city! Tons of vegan food, most museums and galleries are free, and the centuries-old architecture literally causes me to gasp.

MY (VEGAN) GUIDE TO MONTRÉAL

Before beginning this guide to Montréal I must acknowledge Quebec is on the unceded indigenous territories of the Cree, Mi’qmaq, Naskapi, Algonquin, Montagnais, Abenaki, Mohawk, Attikamekw, Huron and Malecite nations, whose lands were violently taken during formal colonialism. The ongoing struggle for the recognition of their sovereignty and humanity continues today.

Okay, bebes!! I have done it. It took a bit of walking, eating and dancing but I now have compiled a list of my fave eateries, stores, tattoo artists and music venues in this city. Lemme just say quick: I was only here for 6 weeks and I'm not omniscient. This list is not complete, but it's pretty decent. Here we go!

CREAMY CASHEW, BANANA + SPIRULINA SMOOTHIE

TRAVEL UPDATE: I got to Iceland this morning around 04:00 (they use the 24-hour clock here) and have been walking around the entire day. I am physically exhausted but mentally hyped because this city is gorgeous and stylish and way too cute. I'll be putting together an Iceland post soon, but not before I share my vegan guide to Montréal! Anyways, let's drink.

Vegan food can be as boring, exciting, strange or common as any other kind of cuisine. It's up to you. But personally it feels like I tend to eat more of the unusual stuff because I am constantly having to preface what I'm about to say about my food with "I know it sounds weird, BUT..." And when I am sharing a recipe that has spirulina as an ingredient, this is certainly the case.

REFLECTIONS IN MONTRÉAL / PART II

These are some [more] pics I've taken + thoughts I've been having while walking through this lovely city. Quebec is on the unceded territories of the Cree, Mi’qmaq, Naskapi, Algonquin, Montagnais, Abenaki, Mohawk, Attikamekw, Huron and Malecite nations.
The first month of this trip involved a lot of feelings and a lot of anxiety. You can check that out in my previous Montréal post. But in the past couple weeks I have found an enjoyable pace to live in, and my brain is fully invested in 'adventure / big trip mode'. I have moments when I realize it's been quite awhile since I have slept in my own bed, seen mom or been around all that is familiar in my life; but my reaction isn't to miss those reliable comforts. It's to be appreciative of my time away from them, because returning to them will be that much more fulfilling. And experiencing all that I am here - away from home - is exciting and new. I've been meeting tons of cuties, going dancing, getting tattoos, eating bowls of delicious food (mostly homemade but also at some eateries) and watching great/weird/old movies with Evie, the wonderful, beautiful, hilarious, illustrious friend I am living with. I've read a few great books and am tentatively getting back into making art (mostly colourful geometric pieces inspired by a documentary about the Bauhaus design movement).

VEGAN HOT CHOCOLATE + MARSHMALLOWS

Hot chocolate is perfect for a cold winter day, aka everyday here in Montréal. I am not kidding you: the sidewalks are so frozen over with ice that you could skate on them. The “snow” in parks and alongside popular walking routes and roads *appears* to be powdery and soft, until you step on it and realize it too is ice, but it’s more deceptive because it pretends to be pillowy snow.

REFLECTIONS IN MONTRÉAL

This is far removed from the regular content of my blog posts. No recipe today, just some self-reflective thoughts on my time away from home so far (as well my time on earth in general) and photos of windows and buildings in Montréal that I took a few days ago.

LEMONY VANILLA CHEESECAKE with CAROB

Hiyo, babes! I'm still chillin' in Montréal. I'll be here for another month or so. I am typing this in a cute lil café (THEY HAVE VEGAN COOKIES) on Rue Sherbrooke, across from a snow-laden park where I can watch tons of adorable squirells hunting for food they buried earlier in the season (I think that's what they're up to anyways?)

FENNEL, GINGER + CHLORELLA SMOOTHIE

Heyo!! I am in Montrèal, livin with Evie for 6 weeks (and her amazing cat, Vivienne) before I am off to Iceland. I love Evie to death but her apartment is basically a single-room cement bunker with one sad little window at the ceiling. So I won't be able to post recipes I'm making while I am here. But at least here's one I made before I left for my trip. Stayed tuned for travel posts, if you dig those! I will also try to get creative and find ways to do decent food photography some days, but I will definitely be posting less in the next few weeks. :(

TORONTO

My time in and around Toronto was - as is getting to be the pattern - a whirlwind of people, places, activities and emotions. I visited for a just a couple days last year and hardly had time to breathe because I planned so much in that short window. This year was no different. I was in Toronto and Mississauga for just 5 days, but managed to see a ton of good friends and family, run into friends and acquaintances serendipitously, host a meet-up, go on a long walk with a lovely puppy, and eat ALL of the [vegan] food. I also had time on the train to Montreal when it was all over to think about Jack, my broken heart (yada yada yada), if I missed home and bedroom and my cat and my mom or if I was just physically and socially exhausted, hungry and sweaty and needing to pee. It was probably a bit of both, in hindsight. I DO miss my house and the comforts it comes with, but I've been gone just a little over a week now and have maaaany more weeks to go. I miss it all in the way I'm excited to return to it, but not just yet. I am mostly looking forward to the adventures I'm about to have (and am having).
Anyways: this post is about Toronto so I'm going to share some photos of my time there with you now. Some are from my plane ride, some from a walk on Appleton trail with my relatives' dog, Bailee, some food I ate with Lisa at Nutbar, Bloomer's and Doug's Kitchen, and some food I ate by myself. (Food not pictured: good shit from Planta, decent-ish gluten-free cakes from Kensington Natural Bakery, amazingly good greasy grub from Hogtown Vegan.) Lisa took the picture of me by the Toronto Art Gallery and I am most grateful. I am also very grateful she was generous enough to let me sleep in her apartment for a couple nights, and be my tour guide like last year. She is a talented, inspiring woman and you should check out her work at The Viet Vegan. Lisa: THANK YOU SO MUCH.
I need to extend another thank you to my Ontario family in Mississauga and beyond: they were all so sweet and caring and I have no idea how I would have navigated the giant city without their help. Pete, Gabby, Julia, Natasha and Alexa: thank you for letting me stay in your beautiful home for a few nights and sharing your maple syrup! Oma and Opa: it was lovely to have a day with you, and thank you for the brunch and champagne! Everyone who came to the meet-up: YAYATHANKYOU! That night left me feeling inspired, energized and comfortably full of steamed BBQ buns.
Ok, Evie doesn't have wifi in her apartment so I've been using the library's, and they are about to close so I gotta run!!! Bye for now <3
XO
