DAKOTA talks about stereotypes and respect
Dear friends,
So I had a pretty rough day recently, and while I haven’t shared a considerable amount of personal information about myself and you only know me as being OBNOXIOUSLY upbeat – I really want to talk about it with you all.
If you read my first blog post, you know that I grew up in a small town in Georgia. It’s a classic little bible-belt town with churches as far as the eye can see and offensive signs in all of their parking lots. I expect the people there to be religious or small mi...

DAKOTA’s dating tips
Dear friends,
Do you know what I’m talking about this week? THAT’S RIGHT! It’s the dreaded, obligatory safe dating post! Yaaaay! Okay so you probably didn’t guess that at all and you’re nowhere near as excited as I am, but here is what’s up – NO ONE ever, ever, ever taught me how to “date” or pretty much have any type of relationship. I figured everything out as I went, which was a great learning experiencing and you will probably do a lot of “hands-on” learning yourselves BUT sometimes you ne...

Q&A With Dakota
Dear Friends,
So – I made a quick question list of some of my favorite things I’ve been asked recently on Tumblr! I thought you all might find this fun.

Question: Would you consider trying out for RuPaul’s Drag Race later in your drag career?
Answer: that’s only one of my biggest goals!
Question: What is MAAB?
Answer: It’s an acronym that stands for “male assigned at birth...

Dakota on what the repeal of DOMA means to him
Dear friends,
So – this week’s blog was originally going to be a Q&A with me answering some cool LGBT related questions from my awesome followers on Tumblr (my handle is kotalicious-definition: remember you can only access tumblr if you’re 13) – HOWEVER in light of some recent events that I think are a little nifty, I changed the topic to something even more upbeat and enlightening.
This week something tremendous happened – both California’s Proposition 8 and the federal Defense of Marriage Act...

Review of Choices from a YA perspective
This morning, I read on my Facebook page that a 12-year-old girl had done a professional review of Waiting for Forever: Choices, and I was thrilled. Not only because it was a five-star review, but because my intention with Jamie’s YA line of books was to get them into the hands of young readers and try to show life from the perspective of a gay teenager.
Savannah knocked it right out of the park, and I couldn’t be more proud of her outlook, or of the way Choices made her feel:
“I think kids sho...

Dakota talks gender, identity, & expression
Dear friends,
Hey there! If you read last week’s post, welcome back, and if you didn’t, you should – but welcome anyway!!! Last week I ranted for a little bit about why I don’t like when people tell me that “it gets better.” Since then, I’ve been thinking about what I could follow that up with, but thankfully I’ve also been receiving a lot of polite, questioning messages on Tumblr about my identity and how people should respect me – so I thought I would discuss that here, with you all!
First of...
