The Mysterious Attentiveness of God

I was at the Dallas airport, riding the Skylink headed to another terminal, when I took a phone call from my sister.  I didn’t have her on speaker, and I was trying to keep my voice down, because no one enjoys loud one-sided conversations, but I sensed I was bothering the older woman seated directly across from me. I thought I knew why. The nature of the phone call led to Bible references and repeated mentions of Jesus. After several attempts to smile and nod at the other traveler, that were...

Caramel and Oats Skillet Cookie

Say skillet cookies and I’m in, but add Caramel Chips and Oats and I’m all in. Okay, so you could also call it a pie. Either way, put the coffee on and call the family. The apples, the spice, the caramel? It tastes like Fall on a plate! Let me walk you through it.

“Caramel and Oats Skillet Cookies”

1 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 and cup light brown sugar
1 and  teaspoon vanilla extract
1 large egg
3 tablespoons corn syrup
1 and cup self-rising flour
2 teaspoons...

Are you a Cling Free Christian?

And now, let’s open the word together before we go.

This morning’s reading had me staggering at account after account of heroes of the faith who laid down their lives for the spread of the gospel, at home and abroad. Their biographies are as individual as their DNA, but one thread shows up over and again in their stories. The threat of imminent death didn’t deter them because, to a person, they had already died.

If you cling to your life, you will lose it, and if you let your life go, you wi...

Is your little “i” robbing you of your purpose?

I want to bring y’all something that’s been on my heart for a few weeks now from the 19th Psalm.

“Let the words of my mouth and the mediation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my Redeemer.”

I’d be hard pressed to guess at how many times I’ve made those words a prayer.  I committed the 19th Psalm to memory a long time ago and one of my joys is reciting it to the Lord in the early hours of the morning.

Scripture memory—now there’s a practice I can’t recommend highly...

Short Order Burritos for Breakfast

School’s in and mornings can be feeling a little frantic. Can I get a witness? I get it. Harvest is in full swing here and that means mornings are moving quickly here, too. My answer? Short order Breakfast Burritos. I like to serve them as “breakfast for supper” with fresh guac, sour cream, and jalapeno cheese grits. Freeze the leftovers individually in foil packets and you’re a minute away from a piping hot meal, just perfect for handing to that special someone rushing out the door. Here, I’...

Part III on Finding Margin for the Devotional Life (Thoughts on Prayer)

Hey’ y’all, let’s chat…Late last night, the beloved farmer and I watched an area weatherman announce positively giddy like that our humidity would be substantially lower today, which is why my weather app now says, “It’s 99 degrees but it feels like 102.”

Only 102. Oh, joy. Perhaps I can explain the weatherman’s perspective with a cautionary tale about what Louisiana weather is like in August.

After a delicious combine lunch (sandwich on the go) with my darling yesterday, I headed home. Only...

Bumping into God

This morning, early this morning, cause Louisiana August and all, I was watering flowers and encouraging the little guys in their struggle. If you can make it “this far” and still be alive, and even growing, you got this.

One thing led to another and I began washing down the front porch.

As I sprayed, I was praying for this that and the other. (If you’ve asked me to pray for you, you may have been the other )

Right about then, I bumped into the brick wall behind me, jumped, and said aloud,...
