Heather Maclean is a Princeton graduate and The New York Times bestselling author and editor of 15 books.

Named one of the '16 Best Entrepreneurs in America' by Sir Richard Branson, she accompanied the adventurous business legend on a 50,000-mile trip around the world, alternately helping improve the lives of others (designing sustainable development initiatives in South Africa) and fearing for her own (rappelling out of a Black Hawk helicopter in a Moroccan sandstorm).

Heather began her career at Disney, where she had the distinction of being the first person ever to answer Mickey Mouse's e-mail.

When not castle hunting in her husband's native Scotland, she and her clan of 3 kids happily reside in Michigan.

Horror and profound loss seem to follow me... just after I've left.

The biggest instance was the fact that my husband & I were supposed to be on TWA Flight 800 from NY to Paris July 17, 1996. At the last minute, we changed our ticket and took Flight 800 three days earlier. We actually didn't tell anyone, so when the plane went down on July 17, my family thought we were on it. (We were actually at The Sequoia Lodge at Disneyland Paris which burned down 2 months later!)

I had a lot of guilt about why we weren't on the plane since my husband and I were in our early 20s, just starting out, not doctors, no kids... why save us? I forgot about the actual date until three years later when I was working at The Disney Studios and learned that Disney was hosting the families from Flight 800 because it went down on Disneyland's birthday, and they wanted to help the families have a better memory of the date. Alarm bells went off in my head because July 17 is also my oldest daughter's birthday. She was born exactly 2 years after we were supposed to be on that flight!

Years later, we moved to Detroit and my daughter attended the all-girls Marian High School. While there, she learned that one of their students had been on Flight 800. The fact that Flight 800 keeps following our family is a mystery I haven't sorted out yet...(less)
