Yesterday, the foundation walls were poured on a freezing cold...
Yesterday, the foundation walls were poured on a freezing cold December day. These are the walls that will support the life I will live inside the house I am building. The root of it all. To commemorate the occasion, I crawled around and hung from them long enough to write a poem in the concrete that spanned the entire length. It will get covered up forever, hiding in the walls, never to be seen again unless dug up and discovered many years from now. I love that thought. It is the moat that surrounds the castle, the words I will walk upon.

Text for Tired Eyes:
Was it stolen, thief taken by robbers masked, carried off
in the still hours of black shadowed street corners,
the echoing hours, the moments where clouds hold the
orange of city lights? Was it destroyed, filled
with lead or shrapnel, exploded across the music filled
concert halls, down the cobblestone boulevards,
did it too burst into flames, did it too fall to ash?
Where did it vanish to, the patience, the
compassion, the inherent hope and deep-seated
respect I will not stop believing we were born with?
Ask for change, any change, and leave it empty ended
and vague, sit back, and watch. Prepare yourself,
brace against the winds that are coming,
they will try to tear you down. I have never been
more thankful for the skin that has toughened
over all these years, for the peaceful heart
that thumps wildly in this chest. What confusions
could have possibly grown in the minds of those
that sent such hate, how could they have
mis-imagined this man? I am still here, softly
speaking words others may shout, I will stay
here, and there will be no shaking when I
speak the truths I believe in. I will love you,
all of you, and those that screamed the
loudest unkindnesses, I will love you most.
Thank you for showing me what I am made of,
for the gift of such understanding. I will ask for change,
any change, and I will leave it empty ended,
hoping, believing that in the ash and fire left
behind, there is warmth still, there is color
and light.

This is the long chill, the slow march through the longest...
This is the long chill, the slow march through the longest nights. Frost crawls across the surface of all things, relentless in its pursuit of us, of our warmth. We cannot forget that we have almost summited this mountain before us, we are nearly at the peak. Light is coming back, we are days away from the downhill race from where we have climbed. Every moment from that point forward, the days grow, the light expands. Breathe heat into your hands, it is coming.
