We share this planet with so many stunningly beautiful creatures, from the fuzzy to the scaly, the winged to the crawling. Such respect is owed to those we share it with, such awe and admiration. After all, they lived here millions of years before us and never did a minuscule percentage of the damage we’ve done in our blink of an existence. We are the visitors here, it’s time we learn from them.

Here’s to the sacrifices, to the 9 months you waited to meet us, to the lifetime of putting yourself second, third, last, to keep us safe, to keep us happy. Here’s to the crust-free sandwiches and chocolate milk, the sleepover parties you gave us and the way they left you sleepless. Here’s to the body you watched change, grow, and risked never seeing it quite the same anymore to bring us here, today. Here’s to the strength you taught us, here’s to the tenderness. Here’s to the unwavering realization that when it comes to being a real man, the single best teacher is almost always a woman. Here’s to the life you gave us, and the scientific discovery that sons leave a piece of ourselves inside our mother’s minds. Here’s to the mothers, those who are, those who were, those who may one day be, and those who are incapable, but still mothers to all of those they truly love. Here’s to the dedication, here’s to the love. Here’s to every single thing you have helped make us, all of the space you left us for us to make ourselves.
