Winner of Mark Lawrence's 3rd Self Published Fantasy Blog Off (SPFBO) with Where Loyalties Lie

Rob J. Hayes has been a student, a banker, a marine research assistant, a chef, and a keyboard monkey more times than he cares to count. The first novel is Where Loyalties Lie and the second is The Fifth Empire of Man. Both have a planned 2016 release from Ragnarok Publications.

I'm now currently working on a high fantasy adventure romp with an Avengers feel to it. Expect heroes, dragons, dark lords, and my usual dark humour.(less)

Rob J. Hayes Nope. There are plenty of strong female characters in the series. Though I'm not sure hero or heroine apply to any of my characters. :D…moreNope. There are plenty of strong female characters in the series. Though I'm not sure hero or heroine apply to any of my characters. :D(less)

Rob’s Recent Updates

Rob Hayes is 55% done with Operation Bounce House: It's very readable. Nothing drags, there's some good character moments. But it just feels like DCC lite. Same plot, different setting. Almost like someone wanted DCC again but without the insane quirkiness and a more generic foundation.

I really enjoyed this one. Wasn't sure what to expect going in, other than a retelling of a Greek myth. I'd say it does the classical Greek stories justice with plenty of intrigue, a healthy dose of romance, meddling gods, terrible monsters, and of c ...more

JA Andrews excels at a kind of low-threat-level, slow-burn fantasy. Perfect for fans of classical high fantasy with all the old races you've come to expect, but a story that's more about the strength of kindness than skill with the sword. ...more

Topics Mentioning This Author

“You say glory, necessity, pride; I say barbarity, greed, arrogance. War is a search for glory, for that particular sense of joy and satisfaction that comes from staking one's life on the outcome of a gamble. The search for a cheap thrill, with a cost too dear for Midas, and on a pretext that, more or less, amounts to 'My neighbour has a thing. I want it.”
Laura M. Hughes, Art of War

“Power ain’t what ya reckon it’ll be. Don’t mean ya get ta do what ya want all the time; means ya gotta do what every other fucker wants. Much better bein’ the knife in the darkness than waitin’ fer it ta come for you.”
Rob J. Hayes, The Fifth Empire of Man

“Jezzet there isn't a man in this room who hasn't spent at least some time staring at you and you're without doubt the most graceful person I've ever seen. I'm sure you can find some way to distract them. Failing that just start ... you know ... killing people."
"Killing people?" [...]
"Yes. with a spoon if you like.”
Rob J. Hayes, The Heresy Within

“We teach girls shame. “Close your legs. Cover yourself.” We make them feel as though being born female they’re already guilty of something. And so, girls grow up to be women who cannot say they have desire. They grow up to be women who silence themselves. They grow up to be women who cannot say what they truly think. And they grow up — and this is the worst thing we do to girls — they grow up to be women who have turned pretense into an art form.”
