Author Sweet Pea: Love Don’t Love Nobody
August 30, 2014
How To Become a Best Selling Author?
How to become a best-selling author is one of my most frequently asked questions. Well, now that both my recently released books Your Husband My Man and Your Husband My Man 2 has reached the higher end of the top 100 best seller’s (#3 & #4) on Amazon for over a month now with no signs of relenting as of right now I’ll take a minute to tell you what I’ve learned. Before I begin I wanted to share that both books have reached as high as #2 in a few categories out ranking Wendy Williams and Stephen King just to name a few.
Step # 1 You Need a Compelling Book Title
This is harder than it looks. Having a compelling cover is very subjective as it may appeal to one reader and not another so you have to use creativity. Your title should fit with your competition but be good enough to call the attention of your potential reader. Shorter titles are more successful and fit better on your cover as well. Give the reader something short, sweet and tells a bit of the story idea. I chose Your Husband, My Man because it let the reader know the story is going to be about some form of infidelity however, it was short and sweet and fit nicely on the cover as well. This is more important than you think, in reader groups this question has come up and most if not all of them answered shorter is best.
Step #2 Professional Book Covers are best
Having a professionally done book cover is the biggest difference between you and a best-selling author. Covers that are vibrant with colors generally catch the reader’s eye faster. Covers with visible titles or words that don’t fade into the cover also gets the attention of the reading audience as well. People generally steer clear of low-budget looking covers or anything that looks homemade. If you’re trying to make it in the literary world this is definitely a must investment.
Step #3 Mind Blowing Book Description is Mandatory
This is one of the most important factors in creating a best seller. Your reader gives you only one chance to impress them and it generally starts with your book title and book cover. Once they are pulled in they will slow down enough to read your book’s description. I can’t tell you enough about the amount of authors who master part one and two just to lose the customer at the description. Your description should be about one to two paragraphs in length. It should also tell about the story but not from the writers point of view. I like writing in third person when doing my description. Consider this your literary movie reel. Make it so compelling they have no choice but to hit the one click button.
Step #4 Be Prepared to Sacrifice
I have tried a few different marketing strategies on a few different books I have written under a pen name just to find that writing more books may gain you more sales but never the best seller’s list. If your goal is to become a best seller and not just a fly by night best seller than you have to be willing to sacrifice. I have promoted my books relentlessly using banner ads with links to my amazon page. Promotion requires lots of time so be prepared to sacrifice a night out with friends, a romantic dinner or two. It’s hard at first but eventually it will be beneficial. Nothing worth having is free.
Step #5 Don’t be Afraid of the $0.99 Promo
My book is apart of a series so my publisher has marked the first book at only 99 cents. I’ve heard so many authors talk bad about the 99 cent price point. Though it isn’t a great place to remain financially it serves a purpose from a marketing standpoint. Quick example of why this is a good strategy. Unknown Author 1 uses the $4.99 cent price point for part one of their story and receives 100 sales receiving a royalty payment amount of $449. Unknown Author 2 uses the 99 cent price point for part one of their story and make 1000 sales receiving a royalty payment amount of $300 according to Amazon’s payment structure. Looks bad right? Wrong! though author 2 receives the lower royalty payment initially they sold 900 more books which means they have 1000 potential readers coming back for part 2 of their book which can increase their royalty payment substantially at a higher price point on the second book of the series even at the 2.99 price point. Look at the bigger picture when pricing.
Step #6 Series versus Stand alone
This is a tricky one because many readers love a good series and others enjoy a complete novel. I personally like writing series and my readers enjoy it as well. Series are great for building a following. When your reader feel connected with the characters they want to follow the story line. However, never drag the story beyond its ending. No when to let go but be sure to tie up all loose ends first. If you are writing a series make sure you are giving a cliffhanger worthy of coming back to the next part. Great cliffhangers leave your readers talking and hungry for more. I have many of my fans reaching out to me via Facebook & Twitter as well as Goodreads just to tell me they love my series so far and can’t wait for the next part. Research your audience by going into your genre and see what the reviews are saying about your competition. Many readers are very vocal on telling you what they like and don’t like about a book.
I hope this article was able to give you a bit more insight into the word of becoming a best-selling author. Don’t forget to subscribe for more Urban Fiction News, Reviews and Resources.

I plan to write spiritual and children novels in the future. I am currently an author at La Femme Fatale Publishing Company under Michele Fletcher, CEO. I have a passion for writing and my purpose is to entertain both women and men of all ages in the future. I appreciate all the love and support I am currently getting from my friends and loved ones. This is only the beginning.

Q&A with K.C Baylor
K.C: As a writer what do you want your readers to take away from your work?
LQ: I would like for readers to take away the fact that I am passionate about my works. They can look forward to enjoying
a good novel to read when it comes to my work. I would like for readers to be able to relate to the characters and storyline at hand
recognizing the factual of the fiction that I have written.
K.C: Which is your favorite genre to write in?
LQ: My favorite genre to write is Erotica because I love writing about sex, it is the best genre to write about in today’s world of
literature. I can write for hours about romance and passionate sex, ideas flow so freely when it comes to that genre.
K.C: Do you prefer to write series or stand alone titles?
LQ: I prefer to write a series, as it keeps the readers interested when characters that they read about face more than one situation like every day people do. Series are easier for me to write about, because I already have the characters to a good story, it allows my writing to flow easier and place characters in certain situations to stimulate the next part of the series.
K.C: How can your fans or readers reach you?
LQ: Fans can reach out to me via email laquita@lffpublishing.com. I love sending FREE copies to my fans via email, so email is always a good way to reach me. Author Spotlight: Ben Burgess Jr Author of Wounded
I had the pleasure of reading Ben Burgess’ earlier work Monster and was so impressed with his story that I did an interview. He has written another work entitled Wounded. So let me introduce you to Mr. Ben Burgess Jr
About Ben Burgess
Ben Burgess Jr is the author of the award-winning novel “Monster”, the poetry book “Times Have Changed and Life is Strange” and the new novel “Wounded” He is an active performer of spoken word poetry. Ben Burgess Jr uses his love of writing to inspire and influence youths to strive for what they believe in, and to never give up on their dreams. His poetry book “Times Have Changed and Life is Strange” and his novel “Monster” are currently used in schools on the lower east side of Manhattan. Ben Burgess has a BA degree in Business Management, and a MA degree in Educational Leadership. He is the proud father of his daughter Jaelynn and is active in trying to improve urban neighborhoods and communities.

When Sasha is brought on as the new bartender, she becomes Samantha’s newest target. The last thing Samantha anticipated was falling in love. When tragedy strikes, what was once a challenge may prove to be her downfall. Can Samantha heal from her abusive past, or will she always be Wounded?
Q&A With K.C Baylor
K.C: When did you know you wanted to be an author?
BBJ: When I was in 8th grade, I read Richard Wright’s “Native Son” I read that book and it was life changing for me. I knew I wanted to one day write something that could have the same effect on people. While in 8th grade, my English teacher Mrs. Marcus gave the class a poetry assignment. My poem was on basketball. I don’t remember what I wrote, but I remember my teacher was blown away by it. She encouraged me to keep writing. She was one of my most influential teachers, and I promised her if I ever wrote a book, I would write a poem about the Holocaust for her. (She was Jewish, and had family that were survivors.) My dream was to publish a book. I continued to write throughout high school and college. My college professors told me I had talent as a poet and writer, so I decided to go to lounges that had open mics to perform my poetry. Hearing people cheer for me and appreciate my words, inspired me to keep writing. My first published book was a poetry book titled “Times Have changed and Life is Strange.” I wrote a poem for Mrs. Marcus titled “Holocaust”, keeping my promise. The poem “Ugly” from “Times Have Changed and Life is Strange”, is the poem that inspired me to write my first novel “Monster.” I reflected on my life, and felt it would be a good story that would teach and possible change people’s lives the way Richard Wright’s “Native Son” had done for me.
K.C: What inspired you to write Wounded?
BBJ: I was working on another novel, my next novel “Love and Happiness” when my co-workers told me I should write a book with a Lesbian protagonist. At first I thought it wouldn’t be possible since I wasn’t a woman and knew nothing about being Gay or the LGBT community. After going to a Lesbian bar with them and talking to the women there, I decided to work on the book. I did a lot of research. I talked to fifteen women on top of the five couples I interviewed, to hear their thoughts, feelings, and philosophies about being a Lesbian, and life in general. I listened to their joys and pains. I also mixed some of my family into my characters to add drama and heart to them . “Wounded” was the hardest book I have written so far. With “Monster”, it was easier because 90% of that story was about me, but this story was a whole different world for me. It was both challenging and exciting at the same time.
K.C: Your work deals with taboo topics most are not willing to talk about, do you feel a level of responsibility to shed light on those topics?
BBJ: I take being an African-American/Urban Fiction Author very seriously. When I write books, I try not to write stories that haven’t already been told. I don’t want to be similar to another author. I feel if we all sound the same, then what sets us apart? I try to write about topics most people can relate to and/or understand. As a African-American man, I do feel I have a level of responsibility to teach people about these topics. I think it’s always good to see things in different perspectives to stay well versed and open-minded. I try to be an inspiration to up and coming authors and readers to encourage them to think outside the box.
K.C: Where can fans or potential readers reach you?
BBJ: I have my website www.woundedmonster.com , I’m on twitter:https://twitter.com/Ben_Burgess_Jr , I have my fan page: https://www.facebook.com/BenBurgessJr and I answer emails at: AuthorBenBurgessJr@gmail.com. I like when people see that I’m not just some robot trying to get them to buy my books. I answer questions and give advice when asked. I feel being involved with your fan base, strengthens the bond that you have with them.

Author Spotlight: Hope Destiny Author of You Don’t Know My Story
Urban Fiction News is pleased to introduce a new author of the Memoir You Don’t know my Story. She is a self-made woman who underwent some of life’s toughest events but have overcome them and continues to strive for her personal best. So on to the introduction of Hope Destiny.
About Hope Destiny
Hope Destiny is my pen name. It came to me while I contemplated writing a book about myself. A book about a life that was filled with so much turmoil. It seemed like I wasn’t supposed to survive it. I was born in Orlando, Florida to two parents who I don’t actually remember having fully in my life. I now have 3 teenagers of my own. A daughter who is 18 and about to go off to college and I have a 17-year-old son and 14-year-old son. My daughter is very high maintenance and my boys are hell on wheels. I wish I could do over with one or two of ‘em but I have to work with what God gave me. LOL.
Children of your own give you the determination to never stop growing. Well my kids did for me. They were the drive I needed to get back on the track I had got off of……to be successful in life. I starting writing poems and writing about just things in life in general while in middle school to try to release anger and frustrations about the life I grew up in. My mother wasn’t the best mother but she has turned her life around for the best but not before my anger had set in. My father passed away when I was 23 years old still not really knowing how to be a father. I don’t have the best parenting skills since I practically raised myself but I did what I knew best for my kids and that is succeed in life so they can see me and strive to be better no matter what the circumstances.
I have my MBA in Accounting and I also have a MSAC which is a Master’s of Science in Accounting. I graduated Summa Cum Laude while working a full-time job and with three kids. I loved and still do love numbers and the challenges of them so Accounting won over everything I could think of. I had my kids young and close together but I was still smart and resilient enough to do better and be better than my parents and as well as all of my siblings so I did just that….I strived…I pushed…I succeeded. If you strive for more, you will get it. This is the second part of three-part series book venture and definitely not my last book. The sky is the limit! If you can dream it, you can achieve it. Be Blessed!
Book Review of You Don’t know my Story
This emotionally charged memoir is written from a raw place. Some parts touch the heart deeply and causes you to reflect on your own life. Hope Destiny tells her story from a turbulent childhood with an emotional unavailable mother, siblings placed in foster homes, domestic violence, prostitution and a variety of other things a child shouldn’t be forced to see or endure. You will be pulled into her world as she shares from an honest place with a talking to a friend style of writing.
Q&A with K.C Baylor
UFN: When did you decided to become a writer?
HD: It was out of the blue. I wanted to let go of some of the anger and resentment I had about growing up, and I am very private so I said what better way to tell everyone about me where they won’t see me or know me and be judgmental so a book idea came to me when I listened to my mother constantly singing You Don’t Know My Story…because people didn’t know what I went thru. Even my mother didn’t because she was too busy doing her own thing. I was reluctant at first of her reading it because it is very graphic and sexually oriented but when she did she finally understood why I was so angry and bitter because I wasn’t the one to go in foster care…my brothers did but I acted like I did so she then understood and asked me to forgive her. Of course I did, she is my mother. I only have one.
UFN: In your memoir you mention lots of events that some would find traumatizing were you apprehensive about sharing that information with the world?
HD: Like I said, I am a very private person. I didn’t want to air out my dirty laundry but I wanted to get a release somewhere so I just threw caution to the wind and let it all hang out. I endured so much that I learned to push a lot of things to the back of my mind to cope. Because of that, I deal with depressive episodes with no real causes. I mean I have fibromyalagia and have had it for 7 years now since the age of 30 and that also contributes to my depressive episodes but I learned to push thru that as well. It is just another pain in my life to me and just another obstacle for me to overcome. I love challenges. I am an Accountant. No one becomes an Accountant if they didn’t like to be challenged. God has given me strength and resilience since a young child or else no telling where I would be.
UFN: Is You Don’t Know My Story a part of a series?
HD: Yes. That book I just released it quickly because it was hard to write. I put it down so many times. I have written and urban fiction story as a collab with another author less than a month after I released my memoir but I was at that story for months and I just didn’t want to do anything else with it. Being I had to recall all the painful memories that I had tried so hard to forget, it was challenging. The subsequent stories will evolve more into my life story up until today that includes my battle with depression and fibromyalagia and relationship issues. You would even be surprised about my feelings about my kids. I am thinking I am not gonna want my kids to read the second part. If they do then I will just have to ask them for forgiveness like my mother asked me because I gotta tell it. I just knew the first story would hurt my mother and I wrote it so I can’t really worry about feelings when it comes to the truth because a memoir is a true story.
UFN: Where can readers and fans of your work get in touch with you?
HD:
Fans can reach me on my Facebook page at either link below….one is my regular Author page…the second one is a page I manage and promote on…the last one is my collab page with another author.
I also have my twitter page listed below. As well as Instagram. I am all over the place.

Creating a Fabulous Book Description
Writing a good book is awesome but it takes a great book description to get readers to click the buy button. If you are like most writers you may find it difficult to sum up your complete novel with only one or two paragraphs. There is an art to it and it should be taken very seriously. Your description is the only thing a reader has to tell them if your book is worth picking up, so make it count. I read books daily so one of the first things I do when asked to review a work is check out the Amazon book page. I like to see the cover, read the description to get a feel for how quickly I would want to read it for a review. Sadly enough people do a very poor job with their book description so I want to give a few tips from a readers point of view that may help.
Stay Away From the “And Then”
If you’ve followed some of my previous articles you may notice that I talk about the writer who has the ‘and then’ syndrome. That means when you are writing you line up the sequences and write and then they went here and then they went there and then they stopped. This method drives me mad, it is very amateurish so avoid it at all cost. Take your time and think of a great summary that gives the readers just enough to follow but leave them wanting more. Your description is literary the “commercial” for your book. It is a marketing tool that can make or break you. You only have a small window of opportunity so use it wisely.
What is Your Story About?
Of course you know what your story is about but can you sum it up in two sentences or less? That is a big challenge believe me I’ve tried. If you can narrow your book down to a few words it is really easy to narrow it down to a few paragraphs. I personally like writing my description like I am doing a book review. I give an overview and then end with a question. Ex: Lauren is a backstabbing home wrecker who finds love with her best friend Misha’s husband Tori. Will Misha discover their secret? That’s an example from my upcoming book Your Husband, My Man coming out this month. You get the jest of what the book is about and the question pulls you in enough to want to know if Misha in fact finds out about her husband cheating with her best friend. Learn how to narrow your story down into one to two sentences, once you master that you can easily do a paragraph.
Never Give Away to Much of your Plot
I have read book descriptions that literary tell the complete story. It leaves no surprise and it actually makes the reader feel like they don’t have to read it anymore. The game of writing a good book is to have it read by your target audience. One way to do that is by having a compelling book cover and the other half is pulling them in with the book description. Your book description should not give away the whole story line. You have to keep it a mystery. When you watch movie trailers it gives you what the movie is about by combining a few great lines, action scenes and a cliffhanger. Be descriptive by combining the beginning of your story or the drama a conflict and the cliffhanger (a question) Give your audience an image to hold on to. Reel them in with suspense and the drama of your story line. Remember you only have one shot with grabbing your readers attention. Make every word count.
