Hand Eye Coordination In Writing: Steps in Writing Evolution

The purpose of writing 1

I recently read an article (Writer Unboxed) where the author listed their steps of development in their growth as a writer. I’ve seen this list before, but that doesn’t make it any less valuable. Many self-published writers see themselves as authors, as having arrived just because their book is in print.  They’ve published some action or fantasy novel, and continue to crank one out after another. They may even sell a few because their story may create a little interest to the word addicts out in Readerland. Yet, have they really crossed over into being a true artist, an author with a capital A, one who has lasting power? I would give my opinion here, but I think you should be the judge after you read the list. It’s self-explanatory. Examine where you believe you are…

Don’t Take for Granted You Know the Meaning of a Word

The purpose of writingMy advice: Learn the meanings of words before using them. This sounds kind of like a “Duh!” moment, but it isn’t.  A writer must be aware of what every word they use means, especially of the nuances of those words.  Words may have more than one meaning, and could shade a storyline in a direction you might not want to go. In writing you can be easily misunderstood, for it doesn’t have the added inflection that a face to face conversation has, or a audio recording of a book. Be ready to work on clarity by wording a sentence in such a way that it can only mean what you want to get across. A good editor can help you with that.

Keep a dictionary on hand, like the Oxford English Dictionary. Use a thesaurus, but assure yourself that you are clear on a meaning before applying some word you think means one thing, but you’ve used it in another. Don’t rely on the Internet for looking things up. Serendipity is a writer’s best friend. You can’t get serendipity on a word search on the Internet. Here’s a great article on that subject. Read and learn, authors.

The Most Common Grammar Mistakes

Untitled design(1)Every writer makes mistakes, and they can make some whoppers. I’ve been known to confuse my tenses when I’m hammering out a story to meet a deadline. I’ve been known to exclaim rather loudly, “Eek! Did I actually write that?” after I’ve finished. This is why editing is critical. No one is perfect and writes a whole book without a single mistake. Even the famous ones do. We all need editors. And don’t fool yourself into believing you don’t! I’ve been reading along, and suddenly, there it is. And I think, their editor didn’t do their job, or they stupidly think they didn’t need one.

Only some are so into grammar that they think along those lines all the time. They grow up to become editors and grammarians (and I admit, some are annoying).  Rarely authors, although a few good ones have. Most are content with being an editor. Frankly, my mind doesn’t work that way. I’m into the story, and unless there is such a glaring error that it disturbs my reading (and there are too many out there who make grave errors) I gloss over it when I’m reading another author’s work. Unless I’m reviewing, and the errors start growing exponentially, I leave them alone, and gently suggest they get an editor. I’m woefully aware that I need all the help I can get, so I also use the Grammarly Blog, and I have a professional editor with my publisher GWL Publishing. If you don’t, then you’re not a true author.

I love this site, and you should, too. Bookmark it! If you struggle with certain words, forms, tenses, wonder what an ellipsis is, then this site is your friend. Check it out:

Editing: A Necessary Step Before You Publish

the buildingblocksof lifeI once had a rather heated email exchange with a fellow writer. I had just reviewed a self-published author and found her story dull and filled with missed opportunities to make her mystery mysterious. I guessed who did it in the first chapter. Actually, the exchange suddenly went from me critiquing the writer’s work to a personal attack because I was traditionally published. After I ended the communication I went in to check out the self-published writer’s books. I sighed, and realized that she was sensitive because she was self-published, and she made as many errors as the writer I was critiquing.

Editing a story is not just about grammar. It’s about meaning, composition, and whether you convey what you’re trying to say to a potential reader. I stumbled across this site and it’s a perfect example of why every writer, no matter how much they may think they don’t need an editor, they do. Writers may get lost in their words, and this particular person is not unusual in that regard. Take heed. Get an editor, a good editor and not your cousin Harry.
