Post-modernism. I prefer “blackout” in alcohol-ism”.

Jane Hirshfield: “My Corkboard” : The New Yorker

Poems, especially Ancient Chinese poems, require a lot of work, with rhyme, with meaning and the object that carries the meaning. In this sense, Chinese are the master of interpretation. But the new poems destroy the rules. Even though we say the rules are made for breaking, still, it is a challenge to write new poems in modern Chinese.

In English, it’s a bit different. This poem says it all.

Louis Menand: What Does Anxiety Mean? : The New Yorker

The mentioning of Kierkegaard is brilliant. Susan Sontag was drawn to it, Whittaker Chambers was drawn to it, so I assume from the article, the whole American was drawn to it between 1936 and 1944. Those years were Susan Sontag’s years of learning, absorbing books, she is one of the typical Americans in this sense.

Meanwhile, this shows us how psychology matters to Americans. Philosophy is also part of psychology, you never separate them.

Anxiety in Kierkegaard is a kind of vertigo, and it shows various effects on different people. I wonder how this book was written, if it is theoretical like this review, I would like to buy it.
