It is the first day back at school for Addie Severson and she is dreading it. Last year, her maths teacher had recognised she was struggling and went out of his way to try and help her. Unfortunately, his attentions were misconstrued by the school, leading to him being unfairly dismissed. Although nothing inappropriate had happened, Addie is now being shunned by her fellow students and labelled as a troublemaker.

With everyone avoiding her, Addie feels alone and unhappy, despite her mother’s attempts to reassure her. However, since the death of her alcoholic husband, she is now a single mother with a demanding job as a nurse, and therefore not always able to give Addie the attention she craves. So, when her handsome English teacher, Nate Bennet, starts to pay her compliments, she soon falls under his spell, naively believing his declarations of being in a loveless marriage and finally finding his soulmate.
Unfortunately, Nate’s wife is Addie’s new maths teacher, Eve, who seems to have no patience with Addie’s inability to get to grips with the subject. Hating her and convinced she is the only reason keeping her and Nate apart, Addie suddenly finds herself drawn into a dangerous and lethal situation she is totally unprepared for.

‘The Teacher’ is a well-written rollercoaster of emotions. Written from the alternating points of view of Addie, Eve and Nate, the story deals with inappropriate abuse of power, obsession and a young girl’s vulnerability at the hands of a manipulative adult. Both Eve and Nate are responsible in their own way for destroying Addie’s innocence, albeit for different reasons: Nate for his own selfish gratification and Eve to alleviate the fact that her marriage is falling apart. Either way, the result is Addie being caught up in their machinations as she hurtles towards a terrifying conclusion.

I can wholeheartedly recommend this novel. I found it totally engrossing as well as disturbing. It highlights the potential hazard male teachers face every day. Young girls seem to mature much faster nowadays than they used to, and while it is not uncommon for them to become attracted to the opposite sex, most teachers know how to keep a professional distance from their pupils. However, there is always the odd exception to the rule, which this novel makes full use of. The ending is both unexpected and shocking and is well worth the read. ...more

As Gwen has dementia, the last thing Connie wants is a stranger meddling in the safe routine she’s built around her mother. Always having been the one Gwen turns to for cooking, cleaning and company, she is therefore alarmed when Gwen starts to confuse Paul with her late husband – despite the large age gap. Taking advantage of this, when Paul conveniently finds himself between homes, he successfully convinces Gwen to let him move in with her. Horrified, Connie is now certain he’s trying to push her out completely.
It’s her word against his, though, as the neighbours have also fallen for his charm, and as her attempts to unmask him become ever more desperate, Connie starts to feel she’s not the only one left wondering if she’s lost her grip on reality. Unfortunately, when things start spiralling rapidly out of her control, Connie must decide whether she should wage all-out war on Paul and risk losing Gwen forever – or has that been his plan all along?

When I first started reading ‘The Stranger in Her House’ I was not sure whether I could continue. As my own mother had been an elderly widow living with dementia, it hit a raw nerve. However, I’m glad I kept going as the story suddenly developed into a gripping game of cat and mouse as Connie and Paul go head-to-head in a no holds barred war of attrition.

Unfortunately for Connie, she has secrets of her own, which somehow Paul has managed to discover.
Every time she thinks she has Paul banged to rights, the more he seems to be two steps ahead of her, bringing her credibility into question and leaving her wondering where he was getting his information from.

Written from the point of view of each of the different characters involved, as well as Connie’s, a picture emerges of how easy it is to be fooled by good looks and a smooth tongue. It is only when the truth emerges, and everyone realises that Connie has been right all along, do they change their opinions.

‘The Stranger in Her House’ is a rollercoaster of suspense, and I can thoroughly recommend it. The ending is both shocking and surprising. ...more

Sadly, haunted by the events of that night, Jonathan is reluctant to mentally go there, but Matilda hopes that, with gentle handling, she can get him to talk to her about that night.

In her absence, Acting DCI Ben Hales has been leading her murder team. However, now that Matilda is back, his position is tenuous. Not surprisingly, he is therefore not exactly pleased to see her, and when a dead body is discovered, he hopes that by solving the case quickly he can prove he is a better bet for the job. Unfortunately, his hopes are dashed when the dead body proves to be connected to Matilda’s case, and she claims the body as part of her investigation. Angry and feeling side-lined, things go from bad to worse as Ben decides to do everything possible to destroy Matilda’s credibility and secure his own future.

‘For Reasons Unknown’ is a gripping start to Michael Wood’s DCI Matilda Darke crime series. Although I am not usually drawn to series, preferring stand-alone novels, I might well make an exception in this case.

The story introduces the character of Matilda as a high-ranking detective who, through no fault of her own, is trying to fight her way back from the depths of depression to reclaim her standing as a well-respected murder investigator who gets results. Set against a murder mystery, the storyline not only follows Matilda on her road to recovery, but also follows the actions of two other characters, both of whom have their own battles to fight: one is struggling to come to terms with a traumatic childhood event, while the other is battling to preserve his future prospects, by any means possible.

As the ‘no holds barred’ rivalry between Ben and Matilda intensifies, so does the gripping tension, which is carried throughout the novel until the truth is revealed in a final showdown. ...more

The story centres around the McAlpine family who run a holiday lodge, offering a series of different adventure activities, ranging from fishing in the nearby lake to hiking in the forest. At first it appears to be the ideal getaway destination. However, behind the welcoming hospitality of the hosts there lies a divided family with enough secrets to last a lifetime.

The story starts with the murder of a family member. ‘Famous Last Words’ is a gripping rollercoaster of both suspense and intrigue. Spanning seven years, the story follows Camilla Deschamps’s attempt to rebuild her life after discovering her husband is possibly a murderer, while at the same time refusing to believe he is guilty. Told from the viewpoint of both Camilla Deschamps and DCI Niall Thompson, the story is an intricate web of corruption, murder and bad luck ... a case of simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time. It is also an exercise in determination and refusal to accept defeat.

Right to the very end, it is difficult to know whether Luke is a victim or a murderer. As the tension builds so does the desire to keep reading. The resolution when it comes is both satisfying and well worth the wait. With the weather getting colder, it is a brilliant novel to curl up in front of the fire with and lose yourself in. ...more

Immediately intrigued by Sadie’s case, Cristy and Connor eagerly agree to investigate her story. However, they are unprepared for the level of Mia’s outrage at their involvement, nor her accusations of them lying to their listeners.

Convinced Mia is hiding something Cristy and Connor decide to dig even deeper into the mystery. Unfortunately, although their podcast is a success, their determination to uncover the truth results in tragic consequences.
