Rock 1 Sock on National "No-Sock" Day

Picture As we transition into the month of May and National Missing Children's Day on May 25th, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) is encouraging others to show support for our missing children and their families by rocking one sock.

What does it mean to #RockOneSock? Simply this, by wearing one sock, when someone asks, "Why are you only wearing one sock?", you respond with something like this, "Just like you lose your sock when doing laundry, some families have lost a child. I #RockOneSock to show my support, love for all the missing children and their families. Will you #RockOneSock too?" In addition to wearing one sock and sharing this message, if you want to donate to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children through this campaign, click here.

Thank you in advance for #Rock(ing)OneSock. Take a pic and post it to social media, tag NCMEC in the pic. Tag a family member with a missing loved one to show them their loved one is never forgotten.

Have a great week and keep those tootsies warm if you #RockOneSock today...it is supposed to snow in New York! Yikes!
May this simple gesture encourage families across the country and beyond... Thank You for participating & sharing,
#RockOneSock for Missing kids

Transitions of the Sunset...Slow Down

Picture One evening while sitting on the couch at my parents' house I snapped pictures of a tree off in the distance as the sun set. It was calming and reassuring to watch the colors change and gradually change from blue to darkness.

When we slow down and look at our life, our past is similar to the setting sun. It transitions from one thing to another, although we are the same person, and this is the same tree...the view we have is different during the process.

Some changes are good and others evoke a little more pain and challenges. Either way, rather than looking back at our mistakes or what could-have-been, choose to look forward knowing that the sun will rise in the morning and you will be renewed and full of a light to empower, encourage, and inspire you. Have a great day! When is the last time
you watched the sun set?

Breaking the Poverty Mindset...Is it Possible?

Picture Picture If you've followed the blog for awhile then you might remember Dr. Mary Starr Carter, "The Wellness Doc". She's guest post and spotlighted my book, Where's Heidi? One Sister's Journey in the past and I've shared some of her tidbits on improving your life through a healthier lifestyle.
I found this article a few years ago and saved it for a future blog.

Here I am three years later, finally sharing it with you. The good news about this article is that although it's from 2014, the information within it still holds true today.

I hope you'll take time to check it out and leave a comment here or on Dr. Mary's website. This next image says, "It's OK, being broke happens" but I challenge you to think beyond this. Picture Does "being broke" HAVE TO happen or can your mindset change this? What are your thoughts on this?

T.O.P.'s Tuesday: Four Years Ago

Picture There is HOPE! Picture Did you know When the Waves Subsides: There is Hope released in January of 2013, three months prior to the release of Where's Heidi? One Sister's Journey? At the time I kidded with people that it was a secret.

In a sense, it was because I wrote it as a gift to my parents to let them know how much they inspired me through their strength and courage. The premise is that when parents lose a child, they are like the broken glass in the lake or ocean. Although broken because of their pain and the constant beating from the waves of grief, illness, tragedy, and loss might feel like they are wearing them down but instead...this constant beating transforms them into a stronger and more beautiful version of themselves.

I can't understand first hand how they feel but as a daughter who watched her parents suffer a parents' worse nightmare, in addition to the gray hairs and pain, I saw and see strength, courage, patience, dedication, and beauty.

When the Waves Subside: There is Hope is dedicated to my parents and any parent who has lost a child. You are heroes and in so many people's prayers...never give up. Who can you gift a book of hope to?

National Mother Goose Day...

Picture Some of my favorite memories as a child, and a parent, are reading Mother Goose. My aunts and Mom used such expression as they read and sometimes explained the meaning behind the story. As a Mom, to have my kiddo snuggle in and listen to a classic was a priceless quiet time. Do you have similar memories?

I love my job as an educator yet as I see the curriculum and standards change, Mother Goose and the classics I enjoyed as a child and shared with my daughter become a read aloud of the past. Let me encourage you to visit your local bookstore and library and read Mother Goose to your children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and students. These classics offer more than a wealth of lessons, they are entertaining and help our kiddos learn to read and love reading too.
What is  your favorite
Mother Goose story?

Joy Versus Happiness...Choose Joy

Picture Joy versus happiness, have you ever discussed the difference between the two? I know I have. I've also heard some good messages and sermons on the concept that happiness is different than joy. Let's take a peek at their definitions and see is there is an obvious difference to offer clarity.

Happiness ~  noun
1. the quality or state of being happy.
2. good fortune; pleasure; contentment; joy.
Joy ~ noun
1. the emotion of great delight or happiness caused by something exceptionally good or satisfying; keen pleasure; elation
2. a source or cause of keen pleasure or delight; something or  someone greatly valued or appreciated:
3. the expression or display of glad feeling; festive gaiety.
4. a state of happiness or felicity.
Joy ~ verb (used without object)
5. to feel joy; be glad; rejoice.
Joy ~ verb (used with object)
6. Obsolete. to gladden.
Definitions from Dictionary.com

What stands out to you the most after looking at the definitions? For me, it is that "happiness" is a "state of being happy" versus the "a source or cause of keen pleasure or delight" that we find in joy. Joy isn't just a state of being, it is a source for us. Can you imagine if everyone went through their day looking to this source of Joy. My joy is found through my relationship with God and my Christian faith.

My daughter and students make me happy yet the joy I have as a source to my being allows me to be happy even when life isn't too "happy", you know what I mean? It's not easy but oh my gosh, it is so worth it... Are you joyful even
when you're not happy?
What helps you remain this way?

T.O.P.'s Tuesday: What is Next?

Picture I have a few ideas buzzing through my mind on what to write next. I shared snip-its last week. A week later, I'm happy to say I've dedicated more time to writing and the inspiration and motivation returns in leaps and bounds. I look forward to seeing where it takes me and which book draws my attention the most. I'll keep you posted, for now. I'm happy to be writing and looking forward to the next time I hear the tapping of the keyboard. If you are a writer, can you relate?

To write might not be your thing but everyone is working on something. You might be painting, coloring, building, designing, developing, changing, or who knows...the sky is the limit.
Can you take a few moments to share one thing you are working and what inspires you to create? What are you working on?
