Indie Author Issues
Hello all,
Quick prelude: My website and blog is under construction, but when it's finished I will post everything over there. This blog will be linked to my newsletter coming out tonight. If you want to see it there, go here: http://eepurl.com/bCbDJL
All right, to my point.
I recently listened to a podcast centered around independent authors (indie's), how they do things; specifically marketing, writing, and releasing books. Indie authors, which is basically another term for self published authors with small caveat's. They are singularly responsible for getting their work out there, if they gimp at this or decide to be lazy, then they won't make much money - nothing compared to a traditionally published author.
Indie authors can be very creative in marketing techniques, and when they put the work in, they can be very successful. Meaning large sales numbers, decent - even great income per book, and a growing readership, including a growing email newsletter. I have no problem with paying for marketing avenues like bookbub or Facebook ads, or any other, but I do have a problem with something that a few indie authors do: writing too many books in one year.
Normally one would think, "well, the more output, the more potential money." Traditionally, yes, that is a valid thought, but in the book market, it's both accurate and inaccurate. There are authors putting out five plus books a year and making decent money, but the place where this strays is quality content. In the publishing world, there a saying that goes, "Content is king." This is true no matter what publishing path you take. Quantity may make you money for a little while, but when a few critiques leave negative reviews because the book didn't reach it's potential, you may want to rethink your strategy.
I don't agree with high book output in one year, because I think that quality content is truly king in a great book. Anything over three or four books a year, with the exception of a novella or a few short storis, is too much. If you're writing and self publishing eight books a year just to make a little more money, why not put an additional two months into each book to make it that much better. Send the book to a dozen beta readers and actually listen to them. Fix things. Make the book read like a bestseller. Spend time turning your novel into gold and appeal to more readers because it's so good, not because you can write quick.
Writing quickly is a good quality in authors, but if you're not a good writer yet, then slow down your writing. As you learn, you speed up. The better you write, typically means the quicker you write. However, even the greatest writer on Earth loses quality when they write as fast as they can. Slow it down and make it better.
I am a firm believer in that writing too quickly actually holds an author back from their true potential. You don't see a traditionally published author publishing half a dozen books a year. This isn't because the publishing house can be slow (that is a factor, but not a big one.), it's because the author writes the book as best as they can, gets feedback from an editor, alpha readers, and beta readers, then makes fixes. Sometimes this process is repeated several times. Once the book is a good as it can be, the publisher takes the book and begins their next process. While the publisher is working on that novel, the author is usually writing something else. Even the fastest traditionally published authors will only output one or two novels, a novella, and maybe, MAYBE a short story or two in a year. You DO NOT see them publishing six books a year, unless they have a large back list. Even then, usually the back list books weren't good enough to be published.
My conclusion is this: if you are an author, new or seasoned, concentrate on making your book as good as possible, bring it to it's full potential, and then publish it. Even when you do this, you can put out two or three books a year, and your readers will thank you for it. Now, get out there and be the best you can!
