Happy New Year, and cuteness overload

A slightly belated (for most) happy new year to everyone. I hope 2014 is kind to you all.

While I haven’t lost my newly discovered fascination with wolves, I’ve been slightly distracted over the last few days watching the BBC series Kangaroo Dundee. It follows a number of people around Alice Springs who rescue orphaned baby kangaroos and hand-rear them, and I cannot believe how cute the little joeys are.

I have the utmost admiration for the volunteers’ commitment, because these little guys take a lot of time and effort to look after. But mainly it’s the cuteness that has me transfixed:

Even so, I don’t think i’m going to be writing about a mob of kangaroo shifters any time soon. Oh drat – I had to say that out loud, didn’t I?

When the writer gets in the way of the writing.

I’ve been struggling this past week with the writing of my current book. I put that fact down to all the interruptions this time of the year brings, but yesterday I finally realised the true reason: I’d taken a wrong turn two pages back, so nothing I’d written since then (and then deleted, rinse and repeat multiple times) was working. And it’s all because I thought I knew best and somehow stopped listening to the character in question (for those who don’t write like this, I  understand how strange that might sound).

The annoying thing is that I know better. I do this quite frequently. Take Red Moon Rising – I started it three times. I spent days planning, frustrated beyond words at why it wasn’t quite working. And then I admitted to myself I’d been holding out against one of the characters. My intention had been that it was Bryce who got together with Colby, because (a) that way the plot worked(!), and (b) he was the guy with the experience and emotional intelligence to know what someone coming out of an abusive relationship might need. But ever since he laid eyes on Colby, Tristan had been jumping up and down, practically holding his breath till he turned bright red, in between yelling “Mine! Mine!”. So when I finally decided to try and start the book with the Tristan/Colby pairing, just to show Tristan all the reasons why they wouldn’t work, it flowed and didn’t stop flowing for c45k words.

I guess I should just learn to let the characters get on with it. Even if they end up making terrible mistakes, they’re theirs to make.

Gift certificate giveaway and blog tour for ‘An Impossible Mate’

The tour is coming to an end, and I’m very grateful to all the bloggers who have so graciously given their time and energy to host me and to read and review the book. The fact that all who have so far posted a review enjoyed the book was a lovely bonus! Thanks also to all those who’ve taken time to read and comment; it’s very much appreciated.

The giveaway for a $15 Amazon or BN gift certificate (winner’s choice) will close at midday GMT tomorrow (Saturday 14th December). Shortly after that – I need to allow time to fold up all those pieces of paper with names on and put them into a hat, because I do these things the old-fashioned way – I’ll email the winner, and post their name here.

In the meantime, if you’d still like to get into the draw, please visit any of these blogs and leave a comment. You get an entry for each comment you leave, so go wild!

A Liar’s Moon – released today! (Also, Tom Hiddleston’s thighs)

Today is release day for A Liar’s Moon. It’s currently available from Siren BookStrand with a 10% new release discount.

I really should be working hard on the fourth book in the Strength of the Pack series, but I’m taking a couple of days off while I recover from the experience of seeing Tom Hiddleston rock Coriolanus. The production made some interesting choices, and the cast were, by and large, superb. And just in case anyone thinks I have pretensions toward being a theatre critic, I should confess that my overriding recollection of the play was of Tom kneeling, legs splayed and arms outstretched as he offered his throat to the knife. I hadn’t appreciated just how lithely muscular he is. Especially his thighs.

Okay, that’s enough of that, or I’ll never get anything done….  Long and Short reviews today gave An Impossible Mate a lovely review:

…Matt and Jesse were a fun couple to get to know because of the opposites attract scenario, Jesse being wild and free and defiant while Matt was tight and structured and used to having his way as an Alpha. Though both men are broken in their own ways and had learned to live with that, Joy Lynn Fielding was able to bring these two together in a beautiful, and sexy way. The attraction between the two was hot and sweet all at the same time….

A wonderful review for An Impossible Mate

I’m really chuffed - Manic Readers has given An Impossible Mate a lovely 4.5 star review.

“….makes this a real standout in the saturated world of paranormal MM Romance….. the life the men lived just burst forth off the pages. I’m very happy to see it’s the start of a series because there are many more tales to tell about Matt’s pack!”

Cover for A Liar’s Moon

Another lovely cover from Christine Kirchoff for the second book in this series. I think she’s captured both Jason’s and Riley’s characters perfectly – yes, Riley really is that smirky and cocky. Till you get to know him. Then he’s worse.

A Liar’s Moon is released on December 11th.
