There’s Something In the Autumn

Click to view slideshow.

A Vagabond Song

There is something in the autumn that is native to my blood—

Touch of manner, hint of mood;

And my heart is like a rhyme,

With the yellow and the purple and the crimson keeping time.

The scarlet of the maples can shake me like a cry

Of bugles going by.

And my lonely spirit thrills

To see the frosty asters like a smoke upon the hills.

There is something in October sets the gypsy blood astir;

We must rise and follow her,

When from every hill of flame

She calls and calls each vagabond by name.

“Murder Off the Beaten Path” Excerpt

Below is an excerpt from my book, “Murder Off the Beaten Path,” published by Penguin Random House under their Berkley Prime Crime label, and releasing Tuesday, October 7, 2014.

MurderOffTheBeatenPath

Lenny’s yell split the darkness. He fell backward onto the slope, yanking Gracie forward off her feet. She landed on the litter with her shoulder in the basket. Ribs knocked against the raised metal railing. Pain snatched the breath from her lungs.

The litter pendulumed below Lenny, dragging Gracie along with it. She dug her knees and feet into the rocky soil. “Stop!” she bellowed into the radio.

A long whistle blast sounded faintly from above.

The litter stopped moving. A scrabble of pebbles rolled down the hill. No sound, but two rescuers breathing heavily.

“Litter, sitrep,” Ralph said over the radio.

Grunting against the pain, Gracie pushed herself up off the litter and crouched on the steep hillside, propping herself in place by planting a hiking boot against the side of a boulder. “What the hell, Lenny?”

His breath coming in quick huffs, Lenny pointed down the hill and off to the left. “There.”

“Litter, sitrep,” came Ralph’s voice again, more sharply.

“Stand by one,” Gracie said, in as normal a voice as she could muster. She slid around so she was facing downhill and swept the hillside below with the light of her headlamp, straining to see what Lenny had seen.

Then she saw it . . .

A few feet below them on the slope lay a human arm.

“Murder Off the Beaten Path” releases Tuesday, October 7, 2014.

Both “Murder Off the Beaten Path,” and the first book in the series, “Zero-Degree Murder” are available at http://www.amazon.com; http://www.barnesandnoble.com, and at your local brick and mortar bookstores–if they don’t carry it, they can order it for you.
