World of Shell and Bone Redesigned!

I know so many of you were fans of the first cover of WORLD OF SHELL AND BONE, but I think you might just love this cover even more. Letitia at RBA Designs really outdid herself with the cover for this one, in my opinion. And it’s so great to have it branded to have a cohesive look with the MOON cover! I can’t wait to see the magic she cooks up for LAND OF MASKS AND MOONLIGHT. :)

Brace yourselves, you guys–this is really amazing.

Ready?

Okay, here you are:

Moon (Glimpsing Stars #1.5) is out! {Also, serial episode news.}

MOONHey everyone!

As promised, MOON is out today!! YAY!!! I had so much fun getting into Moon’s evil head and digging up skeletons in her closet. I hope you have fun reading it. It’s up on Amazon, B&N, and Kobo. The Apple store should be getting it live soon as well. Want a look at what it’s about? Here ya go:

Loyalty. Obedience. Patriotism.

Moon Stewart has no doubt that the New Amanian way of life is the right way. The only way. But was there ever a time when she felt differently?

In this companion novella to the dystopian bestseller World of Shell and Bone, the secrets of Moon’s past are revealed, giving readers a glimpse into the mind of their favorite antagonist.

In other fantabulous news, I’ve been hard at work on Land of Masks and Moonlight. Can’t wait to share some teasers with you guys soon! Here’s a hint: Shale has a bigger part in the story this time. :)

In yet other news, I’m going to be away on vacation from August 4th until the 10th. What this means is that I won’t have episode 8 of the Fevered Souls serial ready until the 19th, most likely. I promise I’ll try to get it up sooner than that, but we all know what coming back from vacation is like…major vacation blues! It might take me a while to get back into the routine, so I hope you guys will be patient with me while I figure things out.

Have a great, great week and I’ll talk to you soon!

Sandhya

NECESSARY SACRIFICES by Zoe Cannon

I’m super excited to have my friend and fellow writer, Zoe Cannon, on the blog today. She’s going to talk to us about her NA dystopian, Necessary Sacrifices.

Necessary Sacrifices is the sequel to The Torturer’s Daughter. I’ve had the opportunity to read Necessary Sacrifices (one of the best perks of being an author? You get to read advance copies of your friends’ AWESOME books!), and it is GOOD. The Torturer’s Daughter was one of my favorite reads of 2012, and Necessary Sacrifices is easily on that list again for this year. Without delay, heeeere’s Zoe (and check out that GORGEOUS cover)!

Necessary Sacrifices K

Zoe, can you tell us which scenes were the hardest to write in Necessary Sacrifices? And which were your favorites?

There were a lot of scenes in Necessary Sacrifices that were hard to get right. But I think the hardest was the scene near the end where Becca talks to Heather about the resistance and what it means to her. I plan out my books pretty heavily before I start writing, and Heather was the character who gave me the most trouble in the planning phase. I just couldn’t get into her head. By the time I started writing, I thought I finally had her figured out – but when I got to that scene, I realized there was something missing. I didn’t know what it was, but something wasn’t right. It took another draft and a lot of thinking before I could understand her well enough to write her the way she needed to be written.

Heather wasn’t the only part of that scene that gave me trouble, though. There was also the world itself. By intention, the dystopian world in the Internal Defense series is only vaguely described, since it’s meant to be an exploration of what the familiar modern world would look like with an overlay of totalitarianism. In that scene, because Becca is directly discussing the state of the world, I had to walk a tightrope between making the details too specific and leaving them ambiguous enough that it would look wishy-washy. Normally I’m not the type to agonize over every word, but with those parts of the scene that’s exactly what I did.

My favorite scene, though, comes not too long after that. It’s the moment when Becca is in total despair, when she knows she has no way of winning, when she doesn’t see the purpose of everything she’s done. And then she figures out what that purpose is. This scene is the heart of the book for me. It’s what ties the story together and gets Becca to where she needs to be.

What Becca struggles with in this scene, and what she figures out, was never intended to be the main theme of the book. The main theme was supposed to be the idea of making difficult sacrifices for the greater good. That idea is still a major part of the book, of course – hence the title – but as I wrote, I realized it wasn’t my main theme. My main theme was, What’s the point of fighting an enemy you can’t defeat? This is the scene where Becca finds the answer – and as she did, so many of the book’s minor details began to fit together around it in ways I had never expected.

Thank you for having me here to talk about Necessary Sacrifices! This book was hugely satisfying to write – even the difficult scenes – and I’m excited to finally be able to share it with my readers.

Thank YOU for taking the time out of your insane schedule to come talk to us, Zoe! And good luck with the rest of your tour!

Zoe Cannon About Zoe Cannon

Zoe Cannon writes about the things that fascinate her: outsiders, societies no sane person would want to live in, questions with no easy answers, and the inner workings of the mind. If she couldn’t be a writer, she would probably be a psychologist, a penniless philosopher, or a hermit in a cave somewhere. While she’ll read anything that isn’t nailed down, she considers herself a YA reader and writer at heart. She lives in New Hampshire with her husband and a giant teddy bear of a dog, and spends entirely too much time on the internet.

Making a deal with the bad guys wasn’t the highlight of Rena Collins’ semester, but, hey, it saved her boyfriend. Now, in order to appease the human-altering organization known as ERA, she’ll crawl under their microscope while they study the Mark of Nexus and plot their eye-glazed version of the future—until she realizes that’s not all they’re plotting.

Wallace Blake has always known his girlfriend is unlike most girls. But now that information has surfaced regarding the two bloodlines that balance his supernatural race, he finally understands why. Rena belongs to one of them. She’s been augmenting his power, all along…

Enter: Corynn Catley. Brought into the country under the guise of an internship, she’s intended to become ERA’s secret weapon. Kind of. Her abilities cancel out Wallace’s, rendering him powerless, but that’s exactly what he’s always wanted. Too bad it only works when his girlfriend’s not around.

All the while, Rena fails to notice the crush her geeky best friend, Aiden Ross, is nursing. He’d give anything for her to see him in a new light—even reinvent himself through questionable means—but there’s a reason people are told to be careful what they wish for. Finding the courage to tell her could put everyone’s lives in danger.

Scrap Metal Release Tour!

Today I’m thurrrr-rilled to host one of my absolute favorite author friends, Jennah Scott! She’s celebrating the release of a novel she co-authored with Alexi Raymond called Scrap Metal. Take it away, Jennah!

scrapmetal

Coming July 8th, 2013!

Thanks for having me, S.K.!

I can’t say how excited I am for the release of Scrap Metal. While this isn’t my debut novel, it is my first with Liquid Silver Books, and it’s also my first co-authored book. I wrote Scrap Metal with my good friend Alexi Raymond.  When we tell people that we wrote it together the first question we get is “How does that work?”

My answer: it works differently for everyone. Here’s how it worked for us.

First: We had to figure out how to plot and plan. Neither Alexi nor I were really plotters. In the beginning I did more plotting and prepping than she did. Nowadays, as we work on books two and beyond, we both do about the same. We start with a very barebones plot and for each section we talk out what we want to happen before we write it.

Second: Decide how you’re going to trade back and forth and know your own strengths and weaknesses. For us we chose which scenes sounded more like our style. Given the choice, I’ll write male point of view all day long. So a lot of the scenes from our hero I volunteered to write. Alexi fell in love with Angelica, our heroine, and her best friend. She wrote many of their heart-to-heart conversations.

Third: Don’t be afraid to use each other when you need help. When we got stuck with a scene we let the other take over. So you’ll find as many scenes written by both of us together as separate. This was the best part of co-authoring, in my opinion. When I’m writing by myself I have to leave scenes and walk away when I can’t figure them out. During Scrap Metal if I got stuck, I called Alexi and we either brainstormed through the problem or she took over.

Co-Authoring can be tricky. You have to trust your writing partner to do what’s right for the story and characters. Regardless of how you exchange work, plot, plan, or write…trust is the most important part.

About the Book:

Not one to settle down, Angelica Rousseau never thought she’d consider planting roots in the small town of Kimmswick, Missouri. When her art speaks to her—and gives her a reason to get up close and personal with body shop owner, Ryker Talcott—sticking around starts to have appeal.

Ryker has to deal with a lot of personalities and has found that custom orders for women almost never end well. Especially when the women are as picky and confident as Angelica. This time it’s different. He’s never met a woman like her. She rivals his confidence and has the attitude to back it up.

When the past threatens their future, Angelica and Ryker have to decide what’s more important—their own promises to themselves, or the love they both feel for each other.

THE DEFIANCE by A.G. Henley

A.G. Henley is not only a dear friend of mine, but is also a mega-talented YA author. Have you read her bestselling novel, The Scourge? If you haven’t, you absolutely have to pick it up. It’s a mind blowing steal at only $2.99, and she also has a companion novella out now from the delectable hero’s point-of-view.

In any case, A.G. is here on the blog today to reveal the cover for The Defiance, the much-awaited sequel to The Scourge. YAY! It’s coming out soon, you guys! I. cannot. wait.

Without further shenanigans, here’s the blurb:

THE DEFIANCE (Brilliant Darkness, #2)

Suspicion Trust. Fear Compassion. Hate Love.

Fennel and Peree learned the truth: the Scourge, and their world, is not what it seems. Now they need to convince their people that everything they believe is a lie.

An impossible task, especially when someone seems resolved to try anything—even arson and butchery—to destroy Fenn and Peree’s new bond and crush the frail truce between the Groundlings and the Lofties.

Unable to tell friend from foe and with the Scourge pushing both groups to the breaking point, Fenn must again decide how much she’s willing to sacrifice to ensure the people of the forest’s future.

Only this time, the price of peace may be too high to bear.

Publication Date: July 29th, 2013
