Pitchslap Contest with Brenda Drake

image

Hi all! As many of you know, I’ll be holding a panel at the RT 2014 convention about pitching called Pitchslap. Pitchslap will be a workshop on how to make your pitch tight, dynamic and ready for industry professionals. On my panel will be agents (Louise Fury and Laura Bradford), editors (my editor Micki Nuding from Simon and Schuster and Monique Patterson from St. Martin’s Press) and a fellow author, Brenda Drake.

Now, Brenda is a contest queen, and her Pitchwars and Pitch Madness are fantastic places for writers to get their work noticed.

So, we thought we’d combine our pitchy powers and create a contest in preparation for our RT panel!

Any unagented writer with a YA/NA/A romance (or strong romantic elements)  manuscript is invited to pitch. On May 5 (Cinco de Mayo, baby!), from 8 am EST to 8 pm EST, we will invite you to pitch your manuscript at the hashtag #RTslap. Both Brenda and I will pick a favorite, and the winners will receive the following prizes:

Your pitch will be used as an EXAMPLE at our panel. This is a national conference with thousands of attendees, so that’s a big honor!

A copy of How to Discipline Your Vampire and a pre-order of How to Reprimand Your Rock Star.

Our agents, Jessica Sinsheimer and Peter Knapp have kindly offered a query critique to the winners!

Lastly, there will be agents and editors trolling the #RTslap feed all day, so best of luck to you all!

Official summary of HOW TO REPRIMAND YOUR ROCK STAR

I’m so excited to finally share some info from How to Reprimand Your Rock Star with you! Get out your guitar pick and your handcuffs.

In this fun and saucy romance novel, all-star college basketball player Thea dominates on the courts—and off—with a rock star who is determined to win her over.

Thea is a star basketball player at UConn on track to be Rookie of the Year. That is, if she can stay focused on the game. Lately that hasn’t been going so well, as her knee has been bothering her. But that’s not the only thing on her mind…

Ever since rock star Keaton Lowe surprised her in the girl’s locker room, Thea can’t stop thinking about him. On top of his status and enticing ways, he seems to know everything about her. But some of his actions cross the line, and Keaton needs to be punished. Will Thea keep her head in the game, or get distracted by her other favorite pastime—reprimanding her rock star?

RETURN TO POUGHKEEPSIE by Debra Anastasia

OMG! You guys, Debra Anastasia does it again. If you loved Poughkeepsie, you are going to muppet-flail over Return to Poughkeepsie. Deets here!

Beckett Taylor is a murderer. His calling, his craft are destruction and intimidation—whether he wants it that way now or not. He left Poughkeepsie to keep his brothers safe, to keep Eve safe. Set up with happy lives to live, they’re better off without him, right?

But all his willpower crumbles when he hears his brother Blake’s frantic voice on the phone. An unknown enemy has moved in on his old territory, and Livia’s been taken. In an instant, Beckett knows it will take an attack only he and Eve can execute to bring her back. All his self-imposed embargoes are torn to shreds, perhaps along with the new man he’s struggled to become.

“Brother, call Eve. I’ll be there soon.”

In this emotional and action-packed sequel to Poughkeepsie, Debra Anastasia conjures a tale of love at its most raw and ragged. With Beckett and Eve, how could we expect anything less? But even when it’s messy, not magical, true love perseveres. Real love finds a way—for better or for worse until death does part.

I’m lucky enough to know Deb, but if you don’t, here’s a little bit about her. :)

Debra Anastasia is busy, just like every other mom. There’s dinner, the dogs, the two kids, the two kids, and her ongoing battle with…ahem… digestive issues, which combined with her adolescent boy sense of humor makes for colorful and sometimes cringe-worthy social media updates. Her first love and crowning achievement is her thriving career as the weirdest mom on the block.

[image error]Her writing started a decent handful of years ago when—along with the animals and humans in her house—the voices of characters started whispering stories in Debra’s ear. Insomnia was the gateway to plots that wouldn’t give up, wouldn’t let go. Now they stalk her everywhere. Halfway through making lunches, a twist takes hold and—fingers full of peanut butter—she finds somewhere, anywhere to write it down.

She’s eternally grateful to Omnific Publishing, which has now published four of her books: two in the Seraphim Series and two in the Poughkeepsie Brotherhood Series, as well as her novella, Late Night with Andres. That one is special because 100% of the proceeds go to breast cancer research. (So go get it right now, please!) She also very much appreciates her open-minded readers, who embrace everything she has to offer, with a focus on anti-heroes and bathroom humor.

Debra lives in Maryland with her family. You can find her at DebraAnastasia.com and on Twitter @Debra_Anastasia. But be prepared.

My #PitchWars Pick Is...

The Master’s Haiku by Kristin Reynolds.

You guys. This story.

I had goosebumps when I first started it, then full on snotty tears sobbing, and finally I got a little turned on. It is gorgeous, enchanting, and I am THRILLED TO BITS that I get the privilege of working on this piece and showing it to the agents of PitchWars.

While it’s not a book that screams “MIna”, I do think that the story spoke to me like no other. I picked it for its haunting beauty, its surreal fantastical elements, and its similarities to the awe-inspiring geniuses Haruki Murakami and Hayao Miyazaki.

The Master’s Haiku is my PitchWars choice and I couldn’t be more excited!

Mina Vaughn: Vampire Spanker and Pitch Wars MENTOR

Querying writers, if you don’t follow Brenda Drake’s contests to nab agents’ attention, you’re straight-up cray cray. Anyway, this is my bio in case you’re thinking of wanting me as a mentor. Don’t be afraid of an erotica writer who writes about vampires and Dommes as your mentor! I don’t bite…unless you ask.

Hi, I’m Mina Vaughn and I write dirty, silly things.  And I want to read yours.

I consider my genre “Kink with a Wink”, which is how I describe my debut with Simon and Schuster,  How to Discipline Your Vampire .  It’s about a role-play-obsessed Domme and a vampire with a craving for punishment.  Yeah, different stuff.  If you’re the type who writes romance, comedy, or someone who loves blending quirky genres, I’m the mentor to seek out!  My next title in the Domme-nation series is How to Reprimand Your Rock Star, which is NA, so I like that, too.  Anyway, I can’t wait for this contest and I’m looking forward to meeting a mentee who loves steamy fun as much as I do!
