Victoria Kinnaird's The Red Sun Rises Tour

Title: The Red Sun Rises by Victoria KinnairdGenre: YA ParanormalRelease Date: Sept 6thFrom CHBB
Blurb:

Eren Anderson is a freak among freaks. At 17 years old, he doesn’t fit in with his peers in the tiny town of All Hallows and despite being born into it, he most certainly doesn’t fit in among The Order of Our Mother, the secret nature worshipping society that has harnessed the ability cast spells and believes vampires are not only real, but their deadliest enemies. Eren is turned into a vampire after an attack by the local coven master, but that is the least of his worries...

In a post-Twilight world, “The Red Sun Rises” is a YA novel intended to give vampires their bite back but it should not be read as simply another vampire novel. “The Red Sun Rises” is a story about growing up, responsibility, falling in love, facing your fears and taking fate into your own hands.

Most of my favorite authors are indie or self-pubbed, what made me you decide to go that route?
I just always knew I wanted to be with a publishing company that really understood “The Red Sun Rises” and I knew that conventional publishers might be a little scared of it – although it is most definitely a YA book, it's a little edgy – my characters swear, smoke, drink, sneak out and so on. Plus, I knew it would be hard to pitch an all-male love triangle to a more traditional publisher! I was very lucky, a friend of mine put me in touch with the wonderful Linna who is part of the CHBB family and she had a look at the early drafts of the book and really encouraged me to submit it to CHBB. I feel that indie publishers give writers a lot more control, are more open minded and expect authors to be very involved with everything so I don't feel like I've been shut out or anything, “The Red Sun Rises” is still very much my baby so that's pretty cool!
What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?
“The Red Sun Rises” has been part of my life for a very long time now. I've been working on it on and off for five years! What I really learned through that whole process is that you have to have faith in what you're doing. Even if you're blocked, if it's not working, if you're frustrated, you have to have faith in your skill and your story. If you keep trying, you will get there.
Which of your characters are you most like? Least like?

I think I share qualities with each of them. Eren's love of rock music is definitely something we have in common. He's also a big fan of Oscar Wilde like me, but in terms of personality we're very different! He can be very impulsive and brash. Eren's best friend Andy is very loyal, dependable and kind, I'd like to think I'm most like him! In terms of the character I am least like, that has to be Eren's love interest Corbijn. Everything about Corbijn is absolutely effortless, whereas I need to try hard at everything.         Do you have a particular writing habit?
There are two things that are always the same when I'm writing – I always write by hand, and I always have music on. Before I start writing a new book, I pull together a playlist of songs I associate with the book and that's usually what I    listen to when writing.
If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?
I find Cassandra Clare to be really inspirational. I think she's raised YA as a genre to a whole different level. Her inclusion of a gay couple in her books is really awesome and she writes them brilliantly.
Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?
Since I signed my deal, a lot of my friends have come out of the woodwork as brilliant writers! A few of them are working on books now, so hopefully you'll see more from them soon. One of my friends, Adam, is an awesome poet and he's working on his first collection – very dark, beautiful poetry so I'm looking forward to seeing that.
Who designed the covers?
My cover was designed by the wonderful Rue Volley!
What is the hardest part of your writing?
At this point, the hardest part is sticking to just one book! I wrote “The Red Sun Rises” as a standalone novel because although I wanted to write more, I wasn't sure if I would be able to. I was about two thirds of the way through “The Red Sun Rises” when I was struck by inspiration for the sequel, which is what I am working on now and I had just started writing Book 2 when I got the idea for Book 3! So my main struggle at the moment is keeping the two books separated!

Do you have any advice for other writers?

Don't give up. Don't let someone tell you what your work can / should be. Stick with it!
Describe yourself in three words.
Short, tattooed and awkward.

I know characters are like children but if you could chose, who’s your favorite from your books?
Eren, the protagonist of “The Red Sun Rises” is easily my favourite. He's like an old friend!

Any song or songs that could basically sum up the overall mood of your book“White Shoes” by Conor Oberst, “Goodnight Goodbye” by Kill Hannah and “Vampires Will Never Hurt You” by My Chemical Romance are the three big ones, although I have a 21 song playlist for “The Red Sun Rises”!

Do you plot out your books or just freely write them and let the characters tell you what to do next?
I plot them out, but not down to the tiny details, I just let them sort themselves out.
If you had to choose, which writer would you consider the biggest influence in your writing?
Is it cheesy to say J K Rowling? I'm just so inspired by how she started with nothing and worked her way up through sheer skill and determination.

What are your current projects? Can you share a little of your current work with us?
Right now I am prepping for the release of “The Red Sun Rises”, and I'm working on the sequel!
Here's a little snippet from Book 2:
“I closed my eyes, reaching with my mind for something I recognised amongst the din. There was blood everywhere - the old metal taste of it was heavy on my tongue, the smell of it engulfed me, slowing my senses. Blood, everywhere.”

Cover Reveal/Review: PiB Files: Volume 1 by Mariana Thorn

Title: PiB Files: Vol. 1 by Mariana ThornSeries: Fur, Fangs and FairiesRelease Date: TBAMy rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Blurb: What does dozens of missing manhole covers, a completely unhinged witch and a werewolf suicide have in common? That it is just another night at the office for Agent Natalya Ignatiev of the PIB or the Paranormal Investigation Bureau. In this short collection of case files, we are taken behind the scenes on some of the craziest calls the agents of the PIB deal with on a daily basis. Just a little insight into one of the most bizarre jobs out there because when the supernatural are involved anything is possible.

My review for: PiB Files: Volume 1 by Mariana Thorn
My rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Shanna Roberson

In this insightful collection of shorts, we get the inside scoop of a day in the life of a PiB agent. With each case file, Ms. Thorn mixes humor with serious subject matters seamlessly and it is very entertaining to see the interaction between Dante and Natalya..
My only quim with it would be its length, but I will always be greedy when it comes to this series. It’s a great little collection and I can’t wait for more!

New Release: Seizing Darkness by Mariana Thorn

Title: Seizing Darkness by Mariana ThornSeries: Fur, Fangs and Fairies.Genre: Dark FantasyRelease Date: Aug 14th 2013
Blurb:   With her past distant and forgotten Natalya has built herself a nice life. She has a job she finds rewarding as a special agent with the Paranormal Investigation Bureau. Her partner,  Dante, isn’t too bad for a bloodsucking vampire. Val, her boss, is like a father to her. Her favorite part is that she lives near the Cascade Mountains. Whenever she needs a little vacation, she can shift into a tiger and go running in the woods. Life is good.  That is until recently. Agents are turning up dead and she can’t pin down what is going on. Little does she know that her past is about to come back and bite her in the tail. With no memories before the last year she is a little behind the curve in finding out what is going on. The investigation turns dangerous as the attack turn personal. Lives are on the line, including her own. Will Natalya find out what is going on before it’s too late?   My review for: Seizing Darkness by Mariana Thorn My rating: 5 out of 5 stars (If I could give more, I would!) Shanna Roberson    This is Mariana Thorn’s debut novel, but you wouldn’t know it. Her style of writing is highly entertaining, heart-pounding and in some parts downright steamy. She holds her own in this vast genre of dark fantasy and is every bit as talented as some of the big dogs in this genre like Kim Harrison and Charlaine Harris.   Natalya Ignatiev has seen better days. Being an agent in a special forces unit handling all of the supernatural spats and with someone picking them off one by one, she longs for a much need vacation from all the carnage. But that wasn’t even a remote possibility.   Along with being an agent with PIB or Paranormal Investigation Bureau, she was a fierce weretiger. She was fighter and a survivor it is its purest form. With most of her memory taken from her, she has spent the last year working with the head of PIB, Valdimir and his two sons, Dante and Radek, just trying to make a new life for herself.   Things take a turn for the worse when it becomes clear that she is next on their list of agents to eliminate. Barely escaping that brawl, Nat is forced to face her past and what it could mean for all she cares about. With the clock ticking and a growing attraction to the boss’ son causing havoc on her body and mind, will Nat be able to unlock her past without destroying everything she worked so hard to keep?   With a slew of swoon-worthy men, the darkest of villains and one super kickass heroine…Fur, Fangs and Fairies is one UF series to watch out for! And Dante is officially my new book boyfriend….*swoon* If you love Kim Harrison’s Hollow Series, you will devour Seizing Darkness! Bravo, Mariana Thorn, you have made a fan for life.

Q&A with Mariana Thorn

Most of my favorite authors are indie or self-pubbed, what made me you decide to go that route?
Honestly, I think it was that I just didn’t want to go through the hassle of query letters and rejections and all that. I also had some very awesome contacts. I happen to have a friend who is my editor I’ve known her forever and it just kind of happened.
What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?
I have a list: To always remember to put your characters shirts back on.
To remember when you are in a room with other people and don’t announce things like: Crap I forgot to put his shirt back on, how much blood would really be coming out if you cut it like that, and oh so many more episodes of crazy. I like to kill off characters, torture characters, I’m good with fight scenes and my mind is twisted lol.
Which of your characters are you most like? Least like?
That’s a tough one. There is a little bit of me in each of my characters even the evil ones lol. From Seizing Darkness I’m most like Natalya, I guess and least like Andrei.
Do you have a particular writing habit?
I always have to have music. I listen to all types depending on what’s going on in the story. I also have to have my coffee and I tend to do most of my writing in the mornings.
If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?
I can’t say that I have one exactly. I mean I have learned different things from different people. I guess I’ve always been one of those people that relies on themselves too much.
Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?
LOL of course let’s make a list and of course I’m going to miss someone and then they will hate me forever lol. Sarah Jayne Carr, Pyxi Rose, Julieanne Lynch, Bonnie Bernard, Coey Cain, Elizabeth Lance, Cindy J. Smith and oh so many more.
Who designed the covers?
Me, myself and I did. I even took the picture myself. I’m rather proud of it.
What is the hardest part of your writing?
Writing the stinking blurb. Most annoying thing ever. If I could write a story in like 500 words then I would write novels in series. I mean seriously trying to take something that is 90000+ words and describe it in one page sigh… Rant over. Lol
Do you have any advice for other writers?
Write for yourself first. Don’t listen to the negative people that say it’s been done before etc. Every story has been done before but each writer brings a new unique view to a story and that is what makes a story great.
Describe yourself in three words.
Ambitious, Creative, Crazy
I know characters are like children but if you could chose, who’s your favorite from your books? Of all time?
My all-time favorite character that I have created is from my fantasy series that I plan on publishing sometime next year. Her name is Layna and she is kickass. She’s been around for almost 15 years. As for favorite character of all time that isn’t mine: Sherlock Holmes and when Robert Downing Jr. played him I was so super thrilled I died a little inside…lol
Any song or songs that could basically sum up the overall mood of your book?
You’re Going Down by Sick Puppies
Do you plot out your books or just freely write them and let the characters tell you what to do next?
A little of both I guess. I have an idea of where most of the books are going but I don’t plan out the details. The first books in any of my series are completely unplanned lol.
If you had to choose, which writer would you consider the biggest influence in your writing?
I’m not really sure, I read so much that I couldn’t tell you what influences me. I really just write what’s in my head
What are your current projects? Can you share a little of your current work with us?
I have a book being released tomorrow by the name of Seizing Darkness. Besides working on its sequel I am working on a short story that is a collection of case files from Natalya’s year at the Paranormal Investigation Bureau.    Seizing Darkness Excerpt:  Landing hard, I heard a crunch as the bone in my left forearm snapped beneath me. I didn’t have any time to respond. The damn wolf was trying to rip out my throat with his teeth. I tried to fight back. He was strong. Normally a wolf was no big deal for me, but tonight I had a big disadvantage. I was weaker on the nights I couldn’t shift.  The smoke was filling my lungs and breathing was becoming difficult. We rolled on the ground and the wolf got me by the throat with his hands. He twisted me onto my back and his body pressed me into the cold, frozen ground. His legs pinned my arms to my sides. I couldn’t get the leverage with my feet to push him off.  His fingernails dug into the delicate skin of my neck. The scent of my blood filled my nose. I stared up at the starry sky. It’s not raining, I thought incongruously. I was barely getting any air through his hands clenched around my throat.  I managed to wrench my arms free and began digging at his hands, trying to pry them loose, but with only one working arm it was impossible. I was becoming weaker as I struggled to get air into my aching lungs. My vision started to get fuzzy around the edges.  All of a sudden, the weight of the wolf was lifted off of me. There was a crack and I heard flesh ripping. I was showered in hot, sticky liquid. As I gasped for breath, the scent of the wolf’s blood hit me.    About the Author:  If you look in the local Starbuck’s or Barnes and Noble you might just find Mariana Thorn. She can usually be found with headphones in and deep into the worlds she has created. There is this thing about her pens if you touch them you might receive a smack to the hand and the well-known glare of destruction.  As a child all her stories involved horses, horses and more horses. There might have been a slight obsession. Writing became more serious in her early twenties but she never dreamed of publishing until much later. Mariana participates yearly in the international event called NANOWRIMO. She has even been known as a Municipal Liaison for that crazy event. There is nothing like the feeling of encouraging other writers, she would say.  Outside of writing one of her favorite places to sit and read are the sunny beaches of Florida. At home in Washington State her favorite activity is riding horses up on the mountain trails. She has an awesome group of family and friends that keep her in coffee and encouragement. Then there is her best buddy Tony, her little dog. She suspects he will try and take over the world someday.    Stalker Links:   Facebook:www.facebook.com/MarianaGThorn Twitter:www.twitter.com/MarianaThorn Website:www.marianathorn.com Goodreads:www.goodreads.com/marianathorn

Q&A with the lovely Christine Hughes Most of my favorite authors are indie or self-pubbed, what made me you decide to go that route?

It was pretty organic. When I started querying, I didn’t do much research about the process. I didn’t research trends, market, agencies… I was green and honestly, just happy to have the book published. With what I know now, I made a great decision to keep indie.
What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?
How hard it is to write a query, a synopsis, a blurb. I had no idea what went into polishing a book. It’s kind of like second nature now.
Which of your characters are you most like? Least like?
I think I am most like Samantha. I know I have the strength inside me, sometimes it takes a bit to find it. Least like? Madison from Three Days of Rain. She was fun to write but, man, what a bitch.
Do you have a particular writing habit?
Coffee, early morning, procrastination…
If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?
That would change daily, based on my mood. Sometimes I wish I could pick the brain of Stephenie Meyer – a stay at home mom, like me. Other days I want to know how Stephen King keeps so fresh. Then there’s Harlan Coben – snarky and suspenseful. Nora Roberts/JD Robb – wildly successful in two genres.
Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?
Sarah Jayne Carr has me hooked on her Hamilton series. The end of Embracing Hamilton had me texting her with a huge WTF? Nola Sarina has a great novella series out – Gilded Destiny and Jaded Touch. Wow! Sexy Vespers! I think L. R. Wright has a great career ahead of her.  Basement Level Five was terrific. I know there are more…I’ve just read some great stuff lately by some amazing authors.
Who designed the covers?
Jay Sabo designed the first cover for TORN and Rue Volley designed the second cover for the Crushing Hearts and Black Butterfly release. Simone Becchetti took the photo for Three Days of Rain.
What is the hardest part of your writing?
Revising and editing. I can’t ever see my own grammatical issues and typos. I also hate cutting chunks out of the writing.
Do you have any advice for other writers?
Keep writing. Don’t stop. Even if it’s only a hundred words a day, it’s more than what you had yesterday.
Describe yourself in three words.
Fun, thoughtful, open
I know characters are like children but if you could chose, who’s your favorite from your books? Of all time?
Fave from my books – Oh…Damien from Darkness Betrayed, the sequel to TORN. You’ll find out in September why. All time? Mercutio from Romeo and Juliet. If he had just declared his love for Romeo, maybe he wouldn’t have been in so much pain.
Any song or songs that could basically sum up the overall mood of your book?
All I Need by Within Temptation. Youtube the video.
Do you plot out your books or just freely write them and let the characters tell you what to do next?
Generally, I can’t plot for crap. It’s all a mess of fuzz in my head until it’s written down. For the WIP I’m working on, and untitled thriller, I have to write stuff down – but I take notes as I go. I don’t want someone to find a plot ole and mess up the whole storyline.
If you had to choose, which writer would you consider the biggest influence in your writing?
No one in particular. I love writing. I love reading. It would only make sense one day I would create stories for others.
What are your current projects? Can you share a little of your current work with us?
I am working on an untitled thriller. Mash together Clue, Lois Duncan’s “I Know What You Did Last Summer” and Agatha Christie’s “And Then There Were None” and you’ve got the gist. 10 teens, picked off one by one… whodunit and why?
Excerpt:  I knew it was dangerous, but the voice was so tempting...  Samannnnthaaaa... Unable to speak, I wiped the beads of sweat from my forehead and looked around. I swung my head toward the window and peered outside, searching for the source of the taunting voice. Where was he? The sky had darkened significantly and just beyond the trees I saw a swirling shadow that seemed to pulse. The vegetation surrounding it had withered, becoming gray and lifeless as though the shadow had sucked up all of the energy. A faint hum filled the air, growing louder as the shadow pulsed faster. Samannnnnnthaaaa...It’s time. Join us. “Where are you?” I could barely get the words out. “What do you want from me?” This voice had plagued me for months and I wanted to know for sure it was Sebastian, yet the thought of finally knowing, finally seeing him, scared me more than the uncertainty. The voice chuckled. Join us and I will show you everything. “Never,” I whispered. “Never. My father died protecting me. I will never come to you.” Again, a high-pitched and foul laugh rang in my head, making it spin. Dark clouds rolled ominously overhead, the wind picked up and the dull humming became inescapable white noise. Silly girl. You will come to us. You will make the choice. It is your destiny. Despite my protest, I stepped toward the window then, leaning over the sink, I reached up to unlock it. My reflection was unrecognizable in the glass. My hair was wild and my eyes were huge and black as shadows emanated from within me. Whatever was out there was reaching for me with ghostly fingers, and as I opened the window, a dark mist snaked toward the house. I closed my eyes in giddy anticipation of the unknown.

About the Author

A former Army brat, Christine Hughes moved quite often. She spent much of her time losing herself in books and creating stories about many of the people she'd met. Falling in love with literature was easy for her and she majored in English while attending college in New Jersey. Not sure where her love of reading and writing fit, she became a middle school English teacher. After nine years of teaching others to appreciate literature, she decided to take the plunge and write her first novel. Now at home focusing on making writing her new career, she spends her time creating characters and plot points instead of grading papers.

My review for: The Singing River by R.K. RyalsMy rating: 5 out of 5 stars (if I could give it more I would!)Shanna Roberson
First let me say that it is no secret that I adore this writer. I can say without a doubt that she is my all-time favorite author, out of both big press and indie. Her ability to capture your full attention with her uniqueness and never let go is a rarity in such a growing genre. With that said, The Singing River is her best work yet! It’s haunting, brutally honest and beautifully heartfelt. Being her debut in NA/Contemporary Romance genre, it is nothing short of brilliant.
Haven Ambrose has been her mother’s rock for as long as she could remember. Even at eighteen years old, she works hard to keep them both a float. When her dad left, she knew that there was a difference between her wants and their responsibilities. Craving something more, but knowing that would only come if she could make sure her mom would be okay without her around. This summer was going to either make her or break her…
River Brayden knows all about responsibilities. As the eldest son of a wealthy family, there are certain expectations of him. Even more so now that his father was brutally murdered. With only a year of Harvard under his belt, twenty year old, River is called home to try and reach his troubled younger brother before it is too late.
In the heat of summer, brought together by local folklore; a girl from the other side of the tracks, a boy with everything but what he truly wants and a legend of a tragic love that ended in the death of entire tribe…this summer would change everything. Because the death chant that is said to heard across the Singing River is more than just a legend. It will be their awakening…
The amount of emotion that this book wrenched from me is staggering. Ms. Ryals has this uncanny gift for making you fall madly in love with her characters. When they cried, I did too. There were actually times where I had to stop reading because the heartbreak was so real. She got a few ugly cries out of me with this one.  It’s hauntingly beautiful and real. It is easily one of my favorite reads this year. Bravo, R. K Ryals….you did it again. There isn’t a genre out there that you couldn’t write and write well.

Excerpt:

I stepped toward her. “You have a way of making people relate to you.”She snorted. “I doubt that.”I was in front of her now, my face peering down into hers. “Really, you do. A few hours of knowing you feels like days.”“Sounds tiresome,” she teased.“It’s a gift,” I countered. There were sudden lines in her forehead, a troubled look in her eye. “Some might call it a curse,” she murmured. “By the end of this trip, you’ll want me gone.”It was my turn to frown, my gaze studying her face. She had green eyes so dark they could be mistaken for brown and lashes so long they almost touched her brows. True, she was more willowy than curvy, but she was beautiful in an understated, elegant kind of way. The faint freckles on the bridge of her nose drove me crazy.“Why do you think that?” I asked. There was something stark and open about her eyes when she answered, “Because I am better at being abandoned than I am at keeping people.”

Synopsis:
In Mississippi, there's a legend about a Singing River, a tragic love story that ended with an entire Indian tribe singing a death chant as they marched stoically into the Pascagoula River to die ...
At eighteen, Haven Ambrose isn't just a high school graduate. In her head, she's an aspiring writer, a traveler, a chef, a slayer of injustice, an astronomer, an archaeologist, and the love child of a famous, rich musician. But reality is harsher. Reality is overdue bills, a crumbling trailer, an absent father, an old addiction, and a hot, crushing summer that may end in disappointment.
For twenty year-old River Brayden, life seems good, but appearances can be deceiving. The oldest son of a wealthy family, he has finished his first year at Harvard to return home for the summer only to discover his younger brother headed down an unforgiving road.
They will be drawn together by a song. For during the late summer, they say the Pascagoula death chant can still be heard near the Singing River. Its call is haunting, its chant a testament of love and sacrifice. It calls to some ... beckoning.
