October updates 2013

Greetings one and all,

I know it's been awhile since my last blog post, so I have lots to tell you.

First up is that the Audio book is well underway and should be finishing up next week for review. It's going to be about 9 hours in length and then my narrator, Lee Strayer of Atomic 27, will be starting book 2, The Forge.

I have uploaded the first 15 minutes of the audio version (well almost 20 min.) You can find it right on the home page, have a listen today... it's great!!

Book 3 - Destiny will be releasing next month and the audio will also be done by Lee. All three and perhaps all the others in the queue for release will become audio as well.

Book 4 - I finished Forgotten Legacy and that has been reviewed and revised and is now in editing and layout. I hope to have this ready in a couple of months.

Book 5 - The Rune as begun and already weighs in at over 7500 words. Just starting Chapter 2 this weekend and the story is already molding very nicely. This one hits ground running with lots of action and suspense.

October is also National Dyslexia Month, so help spread the word about this little talked about disability by visiting The National Dyslexia Association and learn what this means
for many families across the globe.  There web site has lots of great resources and can be a great place to find help.

Book 1 has been free on Smashwords, Barns & Noble, Kobo, and iTunes for about a couple of weeks now and I am very happy to announce that my book rank as risen to the top 10,000 on B&N for Nook. Kobo's rank was in the top 1,000 for several days and has now normalized to around 3400 and 2300 today in Science Fiction Adventure.
Here's the rank from B&N today:
Picture It's very nice to see this and I can only hope that Amazon's price match kicks in soon. I hear can take some time, but as they say, good things come to those who wait.

I want to thank everyone for your support in downloading my free copy, and I hope that you find my writing interesting, intriguing, and most of all, that it sparks your imaginations taking you on a journey in your own mind.

Well, that's about it for now... back to finishing chapter 2 for The Rune.

BIG Announcement!!

Greetings everyone,

I have a special announcement this morning...

Secret of the Crystal was taken down from Amazon, Barns & Noble and many other outlets... Yep, I had the 1st book pulled in the series.

But don't worry, it's coming back online this weekend.

I felt that the quality of the product was not to my standards as there were a ton of unresolved technical issues. As a result of this decision, I have gone 100% self-published. I pride myself in putting out quality work. Although I am dyslexic, it doesn't mean we have to settle for anything less than perfection. While I fully realize that no book is 100% error free, my mission is to provide a product that is as close to error free as humanly possible.

That being said, I should have the 2nd edition for Secret of the Crystal ready to publish this weekend. I will ask my readers to help me increase the level of quality by pointing out any errors that the editing team or myself have missed in this next release. The beauty of self-publishing is that I can update the copy at any time. What's more, is that with Amazon, if an author updates the released version of an eBook, there is a way for you to obtain the updated version at no additional cost to you.

The rest of the story is that I have entered into a contract to have all three books in the series recorded by an Audible narrator. Lee Strayer with Atomic27.com has over 10 years in the radio industry and will be doing the dramatized narration. This will be released in mid to late October for the first two books. Number three will follow soon after.

Lastly, if you have purchased the 1st edition of Secret of the Crystal, contact me and I will send you the 2nd edition in any format you need for free. Simply provide proof of purchase and I will send it to your email address of choice.

Stay tuned for more exiting news in the days and hours to follow.

Now back to your regularly scheduled programming...

Secret of the Crystal Series Updates

Greetings everyone,

Been a very busy month so far and with lots of exciting news to share.

This week, book II, The Forge reached #67 in Time Travel novels on Amazon and hovered at #49,000 for a time. It was great to see this in the second books infancy on Amazon, even if it didn't last that long.

I have a big announcement regarding The Forge; there is an audio production that is now in place and will be completed and ready for publication late next month. Be watching for a sample that will become available later this month. It's gonna be good!

Illustrations are being created for book III, Destiny and will be in layout soon. I hope to have this title published before the end of November and, of course, sooner if time permits... and yes, there will be audio books available on the entire first three part of the series.  I will give you all another update as things progress.

For the forth book in the series, Forgotten Legacy, I'm nearing completion. Its many twists and turns are great and I'm sure will keep the readers on the edge of your seats.  With less than 2 chapters to go, production will begin with editing and layout later this year with a potential launch December/January.

I'm already putting together the plot and direction of the next book, Secret of the Crystal V - House of Sö’, where the Anunnaki train their people in the way of the focus crystals of Ackturra and learn of the Zelinite race. They thought leaving Earth would rid them of war, but the new threat of  Zelinites and their evil desire for power send the, people of Ackturra into a new war that threatens these ancient crystals with the Rune. They must protect the crystals and keep them pure at all costs. This book should be very exciting and full of action as these two very different races wadge war on one another.

There is a lot more time travel coming your way in book VI, Secret of the Crystal - Brothers where the original cast of characters returns in this time twisting and mind bending adventure. I'll not divulge much here... you'll have to stay tuned for more details.

As I have said, there are more in concept after Brothers is completed; Paradox, Time Helix, and the Runic will sure to bring hours of reading and listening enjoyment for all.

Well, that about wraps it up for this week. Now back to complete Forgotten Legacy, and maybe another teaser soon.

Forgotten Legacy (Secret of the Crystal IV), should be finishing up being written this week being I'm on vacation.

The Forge Teaser

Greetings from the author's chair,

Last week I promised I would post a teaser from my latest work. So here is another piece to wet your appetite for what is on the way.

This comes from chapter 9 from Forgotten Legacy (Secret of the Crystal IV). Enjoy this little tidbit and feel free to leave a comment.

“Captain to the bridge!” Fre’tiel called through the ship wide channel, “Incoming message from Colonel Brissel.”

A few moments later Roth’stavous entered the command center followed by his XO, who entered from the opposite access.

“Origin if signal?” Galiagasi requested.

“Sir, the message is coming across the secure signal buoys that were launched before he crossed the terminator.”

“The message isn’t live then…” Roth’stavous reasoned.

“No sir, its recorded,” Fre’tiel reported, “Over audio now…”

The com channel switched to light static and the colonel’s voice was heard, “Commander… Brissel here… We are witnessing several of the southern fleet forming into many groups of three ships… it appears that they are preparing for a major campaign… I recommend that we group our ship in a similar pattern… repeat… the fleet is too spread out in low scanning orbit… wait… no… what is this?”

The audio paused for a few seconds as they intently listened to the colonel type instructions on a console, “This is incredible… I have set the pod down about a mile from a large structure on the surface of the moon. From the looks of this, they have a fully functional facility. They appear to be performing repairs and upgrades on three ships at a time. Others are coming and going in a sub structure… We haven’t been spotted as yet, but there is so much activity that it will not take them long to find us…”

Then the radio returned more static. There was more background noise and quiet voices conversing. Then he spoke clearly into the recording once more, “Sir… Brissel here again, my navigator has informed me that we need to move farther out… I have lifted off, but I think we may have been made… I kicked up too much moon dust… … stand by… … … … I am making a clean getaway… on our way back now... wait… … … we have bogies inbound… they spotted us… increasing speed… preparing for emergency evac…”

The audio signal faded and eventually terminated as Roth’stavous and his XO leaned closer to the com channel listening intently to the message.

“That was the end sir,” Fre’tiel reported, “Your orders sir?”

Roth’stavous stared at his XO, not saying anything, but asking with his eyes his friends acknowledgement of what he was thinking. Galiagasi simply nodded and somberly smiled in return.

“Get word out on a secure channel to the fleet,” Roth’stavous somberly ordered, “slowly bring us together, we do not want them to know we are aware.”

“Aye, sir.”

“Helm, take us over the synchonous orbit keeping the moon face on our port side.”

“Aye, sir,” Sol’dien acknowledged. He pressed several commands on his screen and brought the Luna Aura about, re-aligning her orbit with earth and moon as instructed.

“Sir!” Tormelej’ reported, “I just picked up a single ship breaching the moon’s terminator.”

“Get a transponder code on that!” the XO ordered.

Coming in now sir!” the tactical officer replied, “It is a battle cruiser… The Grim Myth… scanners are only picking up one crew member.”

“Heading?” the XO asked.

“It has targeted one of ours sir,” Tormelej’ said with his voice influx increasing in tone, “The Challenger, battle cruiser class!”

“Helm, intercept!” Roth’stavous insisted, “Arm weapons… activate trionic plating.”

“Aye sir,” his helm officer responded, “We will not reach them in time.”

“Get any ship over there and assist! They are sitting ducks right now!” the XO shouted.

“I am relaying the condition on all northern channels…” Fre’tiel replied with panic, “They picked the farthest ship from us knowing we would not be there in time to support.”

“The Grim Wrath is gaining…” Tormelej’ reported.

Uttarak stood on the bridge of the Grim Wrath with an insane stare. He held his crystal out in front of him and began to make it glow. Once his ship was close enough to the Challenger, just out of weapons range, he proceeded to open a vortex that connected a tunnel to the bridge of the challenger. The ship was turning about to face the attacking ship when Uttarak stepped out of the vortex onto the northern ship’s bridge.

A pulse echoed from Uttarak’s lit crystal knocking everyone out. He stepped over to the tactical station and pressed a few buttons which rendered the Challenger’s system useless.

The weapons and defense systems all powered down while Uttarak returned to the Grim Wrath, turned his ship hard starboard and sped away back to the Moon’s terminator.

Two southern cruisers and a corvette class ship crossed over from the moon’s terminator off of the Grim Wrath’s flank and targeted the disabled ship.

The crew of the Challenger finally regained consciousness and its captain was the first to fully understand what had just happened.

“They are firing weapons!” their tactical exclaimed, “Our shield and TAP system are off line… weapons are off line!”

“Brace for impact!” the Challenger’s XO shouted.

The Daily Dyslexic Sturggle

Greetings one and all,

Do you know how frustrating editing can be? Wow, I'm telling you it is very frustrating, but I'm getting through it. Thank goodness I have a team of people backing me. If it wasn't for them helping me find the errors, I would be in trouble.

I have to also admit that my first release, Secret of the Crystal, still contain errors. I'm assembling a list of problems and will get them all fixed. Those will be published in the books second edition. Stay tuned for more details on that later.

The couple of months I've been working on book 2 and 3. Comparing side by side, with the feedback I received from my beta readers, I struggle to even see the the problems. The incorrect text is highlighted in red or yellow, or it's underscored. I identify the problem and then read it on the other document. This dyslexia is weird stuff, I see it as it should be. I read it 3 or 4 times before I can actually see the problem.

For example, I would write: ...Kate said sternly as he pulled her closer...

Shouldn't that be 'she' not 'he'?  Yeah, it should be... but I don't see it that way at first. It's like 'left' and 'right' almost never get those right. I'm told to turn right and I click the left blinker, or I'll be giving someone directions and they need to turn left and I'll tell them right... no wait, no I mean my other right.

This can be quite tricky... I am a licensed pilot, yeah, that's one thing not many know about me. I got through that, but it was very hard. I'd don't fly anymore, many reasons aside from  being very expensive these days. Maybe someday I can return to the skies.

But I digress, I was with my instructor working on my instrument rating and my instructor gave me the command to turn 30 degrees left for a heading of 210. I began to turn the yoke to the right and depressed my right rudder, which turns the tail and keeps coordinated flight. He chewed me out one side and up the other as he took control of the small Cessna 172. Another funny story is when I was fist taking my training. My instructor was demonstrating what's called a 'cross-control stall' used in spin recovery training. This is not something for the faint of heart, the airplane is nearly upside down and pointing straight at the ground.  He recovers from the stall.  It's my turn now so I pull back on the yoke to raise the nose to the horizon. You keep pulling back until the stall warning horn goes off and then your almost there. Right when the nose drops and you stall, you kick opposite rudder which turns the airplane on it's back and nose down. You are supposed to pull the throttle and then level out the wings and slowly bring the nose up to recover before adding power.... well, thanks to dyslexics, when I kicked the opposite rudder, I proceeded to shove the throttle in... which is not what you do... pull the throttle. With the added engine power, we spun around and around. I tell you, the earth beneath us was a top, that prob ate us for lunch.... fortunately, I had a very well seasoned instructor, but I have to admit, I've never seen a person turn as white as I have at that moment.
These are just a few of the daily struggles. But when I was in grade school I was treated poorly. I grew up in the 60's, some teachers didn't even know what dyslexia was. Some knew, my wife attended another school close by, and her teachers knew about it and tested for it... mine, not so much.
I think it was third grade and when it was time for our English lesson for the day, my teacher would take me out of class and set me in a conference room out in the hallway. She didn't want me to hold the class up. My assignment? Take a sentence and write over 100 times. Then take another sentence and repeat.
I was held back in 2nd grade because I wasn't advancing with the other students. That was humiliating listening to the teacher talking to my parents and telling them that I was a bright kid, but learned too slow. Today, I am grateful that I was held back... I wouldn't have met my wonderful wife I am married to today, we would have missed each other by a grade later at Jr. High.
Raising awareness for dyslexia sufferers is one of my main goals in publishing books. I do want to give those who suffer hope. You are not stupid... you are not slow... you are bright, intelligent, creative people who learn differently than others... we are unique.

I might not have the creative powers to write these science fiction books if it weren't for my dyslexia. It is often said that those with this disability are more creative that most.
Here are a few tips you can use to help deal with the daily problems, most of all, don't give up... if I can do it, so can you :-)
1. Gain confidence Don't let others get you down when they make fun of you. Instead, teach them about dyslexia. You'll find that you will gain them as friends when they understand.
2. Practice, practice practiceI know that sounds like a bore, but really, this does help. The more you read and write, the more you will get it... will that cure you, no. Sorry to say that, but the fact is you will have to deal with this all your life. Putting together the helps in place today will be there for you as you go.
3.  Join groups Being part of a support net will go along way with helping you with confidence and being able to get through. You can share stories and  learn from one another.
There are many web sites you can go to for more ideas on how to cope. Try searching for 'Tips for dyslexia" and you get flooded with sites.

Deslexia is a very real problem, and the more we understand about it, the better off we all will be.

The Unfolding Journey

Greetings from the Dyslexic Author,

It's been a spell since my last post. My apologies, but my work/life balance is slightly out of kilter as things have been very busy.

Aside from my day job, things are happening on the writing side. This week brought some very cool opportunities that are going to be simply awesome, but before I get into some of those details, let me get everyone up to speed on Secret of the Crystal II.

The Forge will be receiving an official release date the first of the week. The editing and production have completed on this second installment. I was informed that I may still be able to get a release in late September.  This would be great and allows my schedule to be on track. Look for that announcement Monday or Tuesday.

Destiny (Secret of the Crystal III), is in editing and should be complete with that phase in a few weeks. No rush on this one as this has been a sore spot with me. As a result of the latest editing concerns, I have enlisted a team of reviewers which are finding the grammatical errors and looking for story inconsistencies.  This has already proven to be a very effective complement to any editing phase. Thank you team! You are such a great help.

Illustrations will be started in the next few weeks for Destiny as well. Larkin Livesay, Jr of Livesay GRAFIX will be my illustrator, we have all been enjoying his craft in book 1 & 2. They are just as awesome and book 3 should be interesting to say the least. Larkin, I'll be challenging your ability on this one ;-)  Stay tuned for more on this later...

Currently, I will be launching this third and final installment of the first three November 29th of this year.

I will be putting together a limited edition gift pack when all three are released. Working on a box set in paperback and you will be able to find the complete series in one massive eBook sometime in December.  I'm also thinking of the idea of created an Audio version of Secret of the Crystal as there has been some requests.  I think an audio version would be great.

Now for some really great news. This week, I recorded a pod cast interview with Eat Sleep Write, hosted by Adam Scull. If you don't know who Adam is, you can look his bio up on the Eat Sleep Write website, but he was one of the premier photographers for Studio 54 in the 70's. He also worked for the Washington Post and was assigned to photograph the stars on the red carpet. Needless to say, this interview became reality this week and has been posted on his website as well as syndicated to over 30 channels, including iTunes. You can download at this from the link above or via iTunes. Subscribe and listen to other pod cast interviews with other authors, these are all very interesting.

Why do I need to subscribe you ask? Because you will be hearing more pod cast interviews with me soon. We are working on putting together an author's panel to discuss various Science Fiction topics. Stay tuned for the announcement on who will be on the panel and the first topic in the next couple of weeks... you won't be disappointed.

... and you thought that was the big news... well, there's more! I can't go into many details but imagine reading Secret of the Crystal on your favorite notepad to background music and an ambiance as you read, something like an entire movie track for books. This gives the book a wonderful depth as you read... Well, it looks like you will be able to enjoy this soon and I'll share more when I can.

It's been a phenomenal week and I wrap it up with another chapter completion for Forgotten Legacy (Secret of the Crystal IV). Chapter 9 is competed and will be titled "General Quarters", from the chapter title, you might imagine some of the action.

I'll post another excerpt a little later to give you all a tastes to what's coming. Forgotten Legacy should be available on Amazon after the first of the year.

Well, it's time to begin chapter 10. I look forward to another great week and I'll talk to you all soon.

What's been happening?

Greetings one and all,

It's been a couple of week since I wrote on my blog. I can't imagine where all the time went, so I began thinking of all the things that have happened.

Other than having a crazy schedule at my day job and working on many projects, I've been busy editing book 3 in the Secret of the Crystal series, Destiny. Now that my content editing is done, it's been sent out to my beta readers to help me find mistakes. Trust me on this one, I'm not the best person to be editing my work. So I've enlisted a team of readers that will get a free pre-release version that they can enjoy and help me find those pesky little errors that all books have.

I am looking for 2 to 3 additional reviewers that would be interested in helping me. The only thing I ask in return, other than returning the markup, is to leave me a reader review on Amazon.  If you are interested in becoming one of my beta readers, please click here and fill out the request form.  In the form, just tell me why you want to be on the beta team, and if you are selected, I will contact you. It's that easy.

While the first in the series was released on June 4th, I have been busy working with the publisher on book II, The Forge. The editing phase is now done and has been sent to layout. I should have the proof in a week or two and it's still on target for a September release date.

Book 3 will be ready for a late November early December release, and I'm working on putting together a set that will be released later this year, that will contain the first 3 books in an all-in-one volume.

Aside from the craziness of work and all this editing, we also have a new family member in our household. Many of you that follow me on Twitter or Facebook know that we now have a 9 week old puppy called Zoe, which in the Greek means "Life", and she is full of it. She's a Chihuahua/Jack Russell Terrier and she is adorable, smart and the perfect playmate for Sadie, our other Chi/Terrier we adopted last year. The two get along so well it's almost like there were from the same litter. Zoe and Sadie fill our house with so much life and where do they come up with SO MUCH energy?  If I could harness that power, I could rule the world, honestly...

The next exciting news I have to share is I will be opening up a discussion forum that you as readers, or authors can gather together in once place to ask questions or discuss books. No, you don't only have to talk about my books... all subjects about books and authors are welcome... stay tuned for this to be up in the next week or so.

So now that I've brought y'all up to date on what's been happening, I should put on my writing hat today and knock out a chapter... sure will feel great to get book 4 underway again after almost 2 weeks of editing.

Please feel free to leave me comments on this blog, its open for your posting and as always, please leave reviews for the books you read. Reviews are very valuable to other readers on what you think. Your opinions go a long way in helping readers discover new works that they may pass by.

Until next time, have a good day!
