Introducing Book Two: FREED BY FLAME AND STORM

Book Two’s title and cover are finally revealed! They were shared at Hey Teen Books Hey last night – along with an interview about the books, libraries, and more. Click through to find it…but I’m gonna share the cover here, too.

ISN’T IT BEAUTIFUL??? I love the new color scheme, and I looooove that Jae is now defiantly facing down the world instead of trudging off to save it. Here’s the cover copy:

Revolution is nigh, and one girl stands at the...

A Year in Writing: 2016

In early January, I usually take a minute to reflect and write a blog entry about the past year. I’m not doing that this year. To be honest, most of 2016 is kind of a blur to me, and the election overshadowed pretty much everything else — up to and including my book release. It all feels very raw, so I’ll do my reflection in my personal journal and spare the internet my angst. You’re welcome.

Instead, I’m going to do a roundup like I did last year — here was my 2015 in writing.

First, just f...

Leia, Rey, and Me

I have always had this habit of mentally rewriting stories I love to be about the female lead. If you were to hear me describe the plot of Disney’s Aladdin, you’d be pretty sure it should have been titled Jasmine. When I started binge-reading fantasy novels in middle school, man, the Belgariad was tedious until Ce’Nedra showed up. Bumbling farmboys bored me, but a red-headed princess? Sign me up!

But no story in my mind was more about the female lead than Star Wars. In fact, I think it’s safe...

Post-Release Roundup

Hey hey hey! Today marks a full week that BBB&S has been out in the world — wow! I get a little thrill every time someone tells me their copy has arrived, and I hope if you pick it up, that you’ll dig it.

A few reviews have come in. Aside from the Kirkus review over the summer, BBB&S has also gotten some praise from Publisher’s Weekly and Booklist online. You can hop over to the book page to see those — for example, BBB&S being described as “a tale of sacrifice, restoration, community, and m...

Today

Hardcover, audio, ARCs. Maybe I will use them to build a fort.Hardcover, audio, and my last few ARCs.

It’s here.

Wow.

A little under two years ago I first posted on Facebook that my book had sold. I just snuck a glance back at that post (which involved a little bit of profanity and a lot of capslock) and a friend who’s known me pretty much my whole life commented, “I know this has always been something you’ve wanted!”

And, you know, she was right. It’s hard to define always, but back when she and I were hanging during recess every day, we were playing...

Five Months! Also, Welcome

Some tweets from earlier today:

Hey, psst. BOUND BY BLOOD AND SAND comes out SIX MONTHS from TODAY. Add it on Goodreads, if you're so inclined! https://t.co/Oa5ikyQNau

— Becky Allen (@allreb) May 11, 2016

FIVE months. I'm good at writing, bad at counting, turns out. https://t.co/ld7BWpeW46

— Becky Allen (@allreb) May 11, 2016

So THAT happened.

I had a whole plan! It was to reveal this shiny new website six months before BBB&S comes out. To centralize all the information about the book her...

Fun With Numbers, or, One Year Writing

I’ve tracked my writing in various ways for years and years – but generally only in sheer number of words drafted, which (I’ve mentioned before) has always led to me feeling as if I’m not making progress when I do anything but draft, and that is no good! So in late January 2015, I decided to track a lot more: dates, times, lengths, and locations of writing sessions, what project I worked on (BBB&S or its sequel, which I’m like 85% sure I know the title of but it hasn’t been made official yet)...

2015, Treading Water, and Selfies

So another year in which I didn’t really blog. I do, however, tumbl, if for some reason you need more gif sets of Hamilton in your life. But here we go. Another year, another round up.

In a lot of ways, 2015 was a pretty good year for me. But it was also a fairly quiet year. I made progress on a lot of fronts, I worked hard at a lot of things, but there were relatively few massive accomplishments to trumpet or set backs to bemoan. But you know, I’ll take an overall positive, if pretty quiet,...
