Killer Deal by Karen Gordon
Looking forward to the publication of Killer Deal by Karen Gordon! Due out in January 2020. I was fortunate to read a pre-publication copy:
What starts out as a mystery—who killed the judge?-- becomes a national-level thriller in the capable hands of Karen S. Gordon. The protagonists, Lauren Gold and Vance Courage, start with an unusual, intriguing objective—how to launder the multimillions they recovered from a Florida drug lord. so the timing of an offer to purchase a luxurious west Texas ranch and hunting lodge seems exceptionally fortuitous. Except, as Gold and Courage learn, the offer was a set-up. No one in or around the ranch, including the difficult-to-please guests, is who they seem.
And what’s the meaning of the glass-jarred scorpions that keep turning up?
Another death occurs. Is it suicide or murder? Then Lauren is shot at each time she heads out for one of her beloved horse rides.
Local law enforcement bears a grudge against the new owners and their lawyers but neither Vance, Lauren, their partner Jake, nor the lawyers understands why. The plot culminates in planned and unplanned battles against a group of rich, powerful corporate titans that the ranch’s previous owner and benefactor, Roy Pompadour, deemed the enemy.
The book’s ending includes several unexpected, engaging twists.
While those in the know will see echoes of the early-2000s Enron corporate fraud and today’s tech conflicts, most readers will simply enjoy the fast-paced action in this second Gold and Courage thriller, one that takes place in a highly picturesque Dark Skies setting near Alpine, Texas. Gordon has West Texas just right, a place where an escape fantasy can center on Midland’s International Air and Space Port and where the beautiful Chinati Mountains can hold dark secrets for decades. Highly recommended.
