Team Member Spotlight – Kyle Schattner
This week we’re introducing you to another incredible team member of The Art of Applying team, so you can get to know us a little better!
Meet Kyle, our customer enrollment and onboarding specialist!
Kyle grew up in Baden, Ontario, Canada, which is a small town with a population of under 10,000 people. He was an honors student at the University of Waterloo where he majored in German. Why major in German? Both sides of Kyle’s family are German, but he was never taught the language as a child. This instilled a desire in him to master the language later on in life.
Besides his interest in Germany and all things German, his other great passion in life is football (or soccer for those of us not in the know). He is an avid follower of the game and supports FC Bayern Munich from the German Bundesliga, as well as Liverpool FC from the English Premier League. In his spare time, he likes to play soccer, watch soccer, read soccer-related books, play soccer video games, watch soccer videos on YouTube, and follow soccer-related accounts on social media (he’s aware he might be borderline obsessed).
His favorite part about working for The Art of Applying? He loves the rewarding feeling of being a part of our team! He feels that it’s “pretty frickin’ cool” (his own words) to be a part of a team that has had so many miraculous success stories!
His fun fact about himself: he loves to sing in the car…very loudly.

Team Member Spotlight – Dylan
This week we’re introducing you to one of our incredible team members here at The Art of Applying, so you can get to know us a little better!
Meet our lead breakthrough coach, Dylan!
Dylan grew up in rural Canada, and went to high school in the middle of nowhere. He was always a very strong writer so he pursued an education and career in journalism. He did eventually decide, however, that he wanted to find work that he found more fulfilling (The Art of Applying!).
In addition to his work, Dylan is passionate about the Liverpool FC. He self identifies as an obsessed soccer fan, and thinks non stop about his team. He even has the Liverpool motto, “You’ll Never Walk Alone” tattooed on his forearm! In 2017, Dylan realized a lifelong goal when he finally got to see a live game during a visit to Liverpool. He loves the fan culture surrounding the club, and genuinely feels that his bond with the team is meant to be.
Dylan has a few things that he loves about working for The Art of Applying. The first is that he loves working with the people, both internally and externally, that he gets to communicate with. He feels that our team is both fun and diverse, which makes for a positive company culture. On the client side, he loves that he has the opportunity to engage with different people from all over the world. For Dylan, it is fulfilling to hear about our clients’ goals and dreams, and to be a small part of helping them achieve their goals.
A fun fact about Dylan? People always tell him he looks like Johnny Depp, so this past Halloween he dressed up as Captain Jack Sparrow!

Princeton: Woodrow Wilson School of Public & International Affairs Master’s in Public Policy Program
Hello and welcome back to the blog!
Last week we told you all about the Harvard Kennedy School’s Mid-Career Master in Public Administration program. If you’re not caught up, be sure to check in out on the blog.
This week we’re keeping the focus on you mid-career professionals who are interested in an advanced degree in public policy by introducing you to…
Princeton’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public & International Affairs
Master in Public Policy Program
Similar to the HKS Mid-Career MPA, the Woodrow Wilson MPP degree has been specifically designed as a one-year program for mid-career professionals who are rising leaders in international and domestic public policy.
Over the course of an intensive year of studies, the MPP program offers students rigorous training in quantitative and policy analysis. This prepares graduates of the program to return to their careers with the intellectual breadth, organizational skills, and self-confidence necessary to assume leadership positions in an increasingly complex public service environment.
Woodrow Wilson MPP candidates kick off their studies with a required 6-week summer program that prepares them for the pace and intensity of the year long curriculum.
Eligibility Criteria for the Woodrow Wilson MPP Degree
MPP candidates come from a variety of educational and professional backgrounds, but all must have a minimum of seven years of work experience in either the public or nonprofit sector in order to be considered for admission to the mid-career MPP program.
Although the Woodrow Wilson MPP program typically accepts only 15-25 students per year, those lucky few will be considered for one of the most robust financial aid packages offered in the public policy graduate admissions sphere. Read on to learn more!
Financial Aid
One of the most unique aspects of the mid-career MPP program at Princeton is the financial aid. The Woodrow Wilson School aims to enable graduate students to earn a degree without incurring indebtedness so that they are able to pursue a career of public service in the public or nonprofit sector.
What does this mean for you?
It means that unless an applicant has received outside scholarships, the school will offer each MPP candidate a full tuition scholarship and a stipend to cover living expenses.
Pretty incredible, right??
The MPP Program also offers the John L. Weinberg Fellowship to candidates selected from the U.S. Foreign Service and other agencies that are focused on international affairs.
To learn more about the types of students within the MPP Program at Princeton, we recommend checking out some of the biographical profiles of current MPP graduate students.
The MPP degree offers students an incredible opportunity to advance their careers and be an integral part of both the public and nonprofit sectors. If you’re ready to be a part of it all, then we want to help! Click here to schedule your free 90-minute Breakthrough Call with our team!

Opportunity Spotlight: NYU Stern Berkley Scholars
Hello! Welcome back to the blog.
Over the last several weeks we’ve focused on MBA deferred admissions programs such as HBS 2+2, UVA Darden Future Year Scholars, Stanford GSB Deferred Admission, and Yale SOM Silver Scholars. These programs have been specifically designed for students who are finishing up their undergraduate degrees, but who would like to get some work experience before heading back to the classroom.
This week, however, we’re shifting our focus to a scholarship that supports current college seniors who want to get started on their MBA studies right away.
Sound like you? Read on to hear more about…
The William R. Berkley Scholarship Program at NYU Stern
As the name suggests, The Berkley Scholarship Program is a generous funding opportunity to support graduating college seniors as they pursue an MBA at NYU Stern.
Established just five years ago, the scholarship is only available to candidates pursuing the two-year full time MBA, Fashion and Luxury MBA, or the Andre Koo Tech MBA.
How generous is the scholarship, you ask? Very!
It covers the following:
Full tuition and mandatory fees
Stipend for housing and educational expenses
$56,000 – two-year Full time MBA

Pretty incredible, right?
But how do you know if you’re eligible? We’ve got you covered!
To be eligible for consideration, interested applicants must have:
Graduated from their undergraduate program between May 1, 2018 and July 31, 2019
Graduated from their undergraduate program prior to the first day of orientation for their designated MBA program
Submitted a complete application to NYU Stern for the two-year Full time MBA, Tech MBA, or Fashion and Luxury MBA

In order to apply for the Berkley Scholarship, both international and domestic students will be able to check a box on their application to express their interest in the scholarship. What could be easier?
Although we feel the scholarship alone is an incredible opportunity, we should also mention that NYU Stern creates an unbeatable MBA experience simply by being located in the U.S. hub of business: New York City.

Stanford Graduate School of Business: Deferred MBA Program
Welcome back to our blog, where for the past few weeks we’ve been focusing on you college seniors who are interested in earning an MBA.
In case you missed the last few weeks, we showed you Yale SOM Silver Scholars, HBS 2+2, and UVA Darden Future Year Scholars program.
For this week we’re heading across the country to Stanford Graduate School of Business so that we can tell you all about their deferred enrollment opportunities.
Stanford GSB takes pride in building MBA classes with diverse educational and professional backgrounds. They encourage students who are in their final year of study at their undergraduate institution to apply for deferred enrollment so that they can gain crucial professional experience before entering the business school classroom.
But what if you’re in a hurry to get that MBA?
Why choose Deferred Enrollment over Direct Enrollment?
If you feel ready to pursue an MBA based on your current academic background, extracurricular experiences and impact through internships, then direct enrollment might be the right choice for you. However, Stanford GSB tends to think that for most college seniors, deferred admission is the better option.
Stanford GSB encourages you to apply to deferred enrollment if you feel you might benefit from obtaining some full-time work experience before enrolling.
This could be a smart decision if you’re unsure of your long-term professional goals (we’ve all been there; don’t worry!) or if you want to try exploring an industry before returning to school.
Stanford also advises that some industries, such as private equity and biotechnology, do tend to recruit only MBA candidates with pre-MBA experience in that field, or with specialized knowledge. Management consulting firms also tend to prefer MBA candidates with work experience. So if you’re interested in any of these fields, deferred enrollment might make sense for you.
If you do decide that you want to defer enrollment, Stanford does expect you to be actively engaged either in full-time work or full-time study during your deferral period. They encourage you to pursue opportunities that will enable you to build expertise, enhance your skills and knowledge, expand your perspective, and develop professional judgment and self-confidence. They also ask you to state in your application what your plans are for your time in between your graduation and your enrollment at Stanford.
So who is eligible for the program?
Criteria for Deferred Enrollment
In order to be considered for deferred enrollment you must meet the following standards:
Graduation from a degree program between October 2018 and September 2019. You must be enrolled in a full-time program prior to graduation OR be currently enrolled in a full-time law or medical program.
Your educational program must meet one of the following criteria:
Undergraduate degree program
Combined undergraduate/graduate program (pursuing bachelor and master degrees simultaneously)
Graduate programs which you entered directly from an undergraduate program. (If there is a gap of one or more academic years between the two programs, you do not qualify for deferred enrollment)
Requesting Deferred Enrollment
You may indicate in your application the year that you would prefer to attend Stanford. However, Stanford may choose to admit you for a different year than you request. In most cases, Stanford will offer a two year deferral.
Clearly there’s a lot of value you can gain from deferring your admission to Stanford’s MBA program, especially given that it offers an opportunity to gain some real-world work experience before heading back to the classroom.
If you think deferred enrollment might be the right option for you, we’d love to speak with you about your applications! If you are applying in the next 12-18 months, click here to schedule your free 90-minute Breakthrough Call!

Yale School of Management: Silver Scholars Program
Hello and welcome back to the blog!
Last week, we introduced you to the HBS 2+2 program. If you missed it, be sure to catch up on our blog!
This week we’re highlighting another opportunity to pursue a top-tier graduate business education even if you’re still in college.
Read on as we present the Silver Scholars Program at Yale School of Management.
So just what is the program?
Silver Scholars was founded in 2001 in conjunction with Yale University’s tercentennial (yep, Yale is over 300 years old!) and the 25th anniversary of Yale School of Management.
The program takes place over three years and is designed specifically for those who have recently graduated from their undergraduate institutions.
In the first year of study, students spend their time developing foundational business skills and learning the mindset of a manager by participating in Yale SOM’s core curriculum. This allows students to develop management and analytical skills before they begin their second year.
The second year is dedicated to a full time internship. This internship will help students put their business education into practice, develop crucial leadership skills, and help to give students a competitive edge when they pursue a permanent position after graduating from the Silver Scholars program.
Silver Scholars have pursued internships at a wide range of prestigious private, public and nonprofit organizations, including Booz Allen Hamilton, Boston Consulting Group, CARE, Coca-Cola, Dow Jones, Motorola, Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, Pfizer, Time Inc., the U.S. State Department, and Vanguard.
As you can see, being a Silver Scholar can open you up to world of opportunity, both during and after the program!
Graduates have secured full-time positions at Barclays Capital, Boston Consulting Group, British Petroleum, Citigroup, Google, Kimberly-Clark, Mercy Corps, the New York Times Company, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the U.S. Treasury.
For the third year, students return to Yale’s campus to conclude their MBA studies by taking electives focused on their interests and future career goals.
Sounds like a pretty incredible opportunity to us!
So just who is the Silver Scholars Program looking for?
Yale seeks scholars of intelligence and common sense, who possess maturity and curiosity, passion and compassion. They want students who have distinguished themselves and made a difference in their particular field of interest. The Silver Scholars are looking for college seniors who will be future leaders in the business, government, and nonprofit sectors.
Click here to read the profile of a student who graduated from the Silver Scholars Program in 2015.
So how do I apply, you ask??
Aspiring Silver Scholars must fill out the same application as those wishing to gain admittance to the full-time MBA program at Yale SOM. However there are a few additional instructions for those wishing to apply to the program:
Only current college seniors are eligible to apply. This means that your graduation date must be on or after December 1st, 2018.
Silver Scholars must provide two letters of recommendation: one letter from an academic instructor and one letter from an employer (if you have no work experience, than you may secure a letter from an extracurricular activity or volunteer organization in which you have actively been involved).
If invited to interview, applicants will attend a half-hour interview with one or more members of the Silver Scholars Committee. The interview will focus on your personal goals and interests, and your academic background.
International students are welcome to apply!
For the Work Experience section of the application: Do not list any work experience that took place during your undergraduate studies; instead, be sure to include them in your resume.
For the Activities section of the application: You may use this space to highlight up to two activities to which you dedicate a significant amount of time outside of class. You may include additional activities on your resume.
For additional information, check out Yale SOM’s Silver Scholars Program brochure.
