How to Have a Missional Summer Vacation

How to Have a Missional Summer Vacation - Teaser
My dad turned to the waitress who was tired and slightly harried: "Thank you so much for serving us today. You have been kind and very thoughtful. Do you know what the Bible says about you? Did you know that the Bible says that those who serve have a special blessing? I pray that the Lord blesses you with an extra special blessing today."

I watched as her face turned from amusement to gratefulness, and her eyes well up with tears. Surely, she had served some pretty demanding people who left less than generous tips.

Carrying tray after tray and serving people who didn't give her a second thought all day, just so she could scrape together a living to feed her husband and kids.

And here this man sat there telling her that the Bible talks about her?

That God wants to bless her?

I am over at Marriage, Motherhood and Missions sharing about How to Have a Missional Summer Vacation

5 Things {You Need} To Start A Blog - A Little R & R Wednesdays - a linky party #55

I have been planning this new series for months!

One of the things I love to do is mentor new bloggers!

I used to lead a small group of new bloggers on Facebook, but since it just kept growing and growing I thought I'd take the information here and share with anyone and everyone who is looking to:

1. Start a new blog

2. Improve their blog

3. Learn more about how to blog and connect with other bloggers

4. Learn new tips and tricks about blogging resources

...and more

I want to start this series from step one. So here we go!

5 Things {You Need} To Start A Blog1. A VisionThis may seem obvious to some, but I was one of many bloggers who started blogging with no vision or mission in mind.  I just opened a blog and talked about my son's antics for the day.  I am not sure this was interesting to anyone but me.
Before you come up with a name for your blog or anything else, sit down and ask yourself: What, Why, Whom.
What do I want to write about?
Why do I want to write about it?
and To Whom do I want to write?
Let that be the launching pad for your vision.

Write out your statement: it should be only 1-2 sentences long. Short, concise and to the point.

2. A MissionNow that you know what, why and whom, ask yourself: "What do I hope to accomplish through this vision (what is the long-term objective) and what course of action do I need to take to get there?"
In other words, your vision statement is "Z" and your mission is A-Y.

Write out your statement. Your mission statement can be longer - it should have points of action, short term and long term goals and provide tools for you to accomplish your vision.

3. A PlatformYour vision and mission will help to determine your platform. You have free blogging platforms (the most popular being Blogger and Wordpress.org) and paid platforms (the most popular being Wordpress.com).
Do you want to eventually monetize your blog? Are you wanting to blog as a first-step to becoming an author? Are you wanting to reach a wide audience through writing?
or
Are you looking for an outlet to share what is on your heart? Do you want to simply encourage the body of Christ and connect to other Christian/mommy bloggers?
These questions will determine which platform you choose.

4. A TitleI could probably write a book titled "What Not To Do With Your Blog". I have literally made every mistake in the book...including changing my blog title 1,587 times. I finally settled on something to do with "Musings" - and thought I was soooooooo clever. I was pretty sure I was the only "musing" blogger out there. That is, until I joined a mommy-blogger community and discovered that every other mommy blogger also mused!
In the end, through a blog contest, I settled on A Little R & R.
Choose a title with no more than 2-3 words.  Choose something unique Choose something that best describes you When in doubt, use your own name

5. Topics, Subtopics and CategoriesOne of the ideas that I loved in Ruth Soukup's book "How To Blog for Profit Without Selling Your Soul" is developing a clear plan for your writing. Another mistake I made early on was being too random. I actually prided myself on the random nature of my blogging - not realizing that my randomness was a dead-weight that was keeping me from being successful.
Ruth suggests 1 main theme - an umbrella of sorts, under which you will have 5-8 topics and then 4-5 categories under each topic. This will help you stay on target and narrow down what you plan to write about.

With these 5 elements in place, you're ready to start blogging!!

3 Philosophies of Worship That I've Stopped Believing

There is one fact about me that my readers who have not met me personally may not know.

I used to lead worship
It is crazy to think that is now a little known fact about me, when only a decade before I couldn't even imagine myself doing anything else!
The fact is that I am a musician and singer. I have studied music for most of my life and attended a school that specializes in worship-leader training.

Yet for the past 10 years I have led worship only a handful of times and for the past 5 years I have had very little do with music at all.
I don't know if it was because I was burned out, or if God simply wanted to use me in other areas of ministry...
...but there is one thing that I can see clearer now that I have been disassociated with worship leading for so long.

I used to get very defensive when someone criticized the worship in our church: the music, the style, the quality of musicianship...or modern worship music in general. I took it very personally.   Over the years I had picked up a number of canned responses and arguments that I used liberally - and whole-heartedly believed.
Honestly, the past  number of years  have offered a cleansing of sorts and a re-examination of what my philosophy of worship really is and what I believe the biblical role of worship in the church should be.
This cleansing forced me to revisit those arguments. I took some of them even closer to heart while others I simply stopped using.
3 Philosophies of Worship That I've Stopped Believing 1. Exodus 19:16-19 is evidence that God likes loud worship
"Then it came to pass on the third day, in the morning, that there were thunderings and lightnings, and a thick cloud on the mountain; and the sound of the trumpet was very loud, so that all the people who were in the camp trembled. And Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain. Now Mount Sinai was completely in smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire. Its smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain quaked greatly. And when the blast of the trumpet sounded long and became louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him by voice."

I have heard this philosophy quite often by many people -  not just worship leaders.
This passage in Exodus is part of the story when the Israelites had just left Egypt. God's desire was to make them a special and unique kingdom of kings and priests. He was calling them to the mountain to consecrate them; but they were so afraid by the thunder and loud trumpets that they refused to meet with Him.
In this instance, on this occasion, He chose to reveal Himself in this way . But it's not a principle!
Other places and on other occasions God chose to reveal Himself in other ways
Furthermore, this passage doesn't have anything at all to do with worship. It has to do with God revealing Himself to His people to consecrate them for service.
In my years of ministry I can definitely say that there have been times when quiet, intimate worship has been quite powerful, while at times loud, thumping music has simply been loud and thumping - and not very inspiring at all.
The volume of music in no way indicates the proportion of anointing that is present.
Quite the contrary.
There is a certain decibel level at which we begin to lose a measure of hearing. Anytime the music stops and your ears begin to ring, you can be certain that you have lost a measure of hearing.
I am of the opinion that it is a sin to subject our congregations to worship at decibel levels that cause them to lose their hearing. That may be a strong statement, but I do not believe that God would lead us to crank up our volume levels and deprive the people of one of their 5 senses just to prove that God is present.
Just leave them at normal levels and let the King of Kings show up and do His work His way.

2. The lack of demonstrative worship reveals a heart that lacks dedication and sincerityI used to believe that everyone should worship as I do - with gusto! That is, until I married my husband, who is far less demonstrative than I. He has a strong phlegmatic side, and the slightest show of emotion is evidence of a massive combustion going on inside of him.  When I discovered this side of him, something my mom used to say to me came to mind:

Quiet waters run deep
That pretty much sums up my husband.
On the other hand, I have known some who have jumped, danced, wailed and cried on Sunday while Monday through Friday lived very carnal lives.
The same is true for the argument that people jump up and down at ball games and concerts and yet sit like logs on Sunday.
I understand the argument that if people go wild for a ball team or band, they should go just as wild for God. Yet, one can also argue that there are those who react neither at ballgames nor during worship - they are simply not very demonstrative....ever.
I have learned that truly only God knows the heart of man!!
The scripture says that we cannot know our own hearts. If that is true, how can we hope to know the heart of another?  The answer is we can't. And when we pretend we do, we become judgemental.
This is a great trap for worship leaders because we begin to think that audience participation validates our ability to lead worship.  We have to reject this lie. And we must remember that what we see or don't see on people's expressions may have little to do with what God is doing in their hearts.

3. David used the best musicians in the temple, so we should only use the best musicians for worship.
In 1 Chronicles 25 it refers repeatedly to the sons of Heman as skilled musicians who prophesied on their instruments before the Lord.
I find this passage so very insightful because I believe while many have used it as a foundation for the increased professionalism in today's worship, it actually lays bare the deception that many have succumbed to.
a) We see that the musicians were separated - consecrated. They were set apart for one service alone - to minister before the Lord in music.
Do we require consecration and sanctification of those who are on our worship teams? Consecration and sanctification should always come first! A worship team does far more than just provide cool music for people to sing along to on Sunday. A worship team - not just the leader - leads the congregation in a procession right into the very presence of God Himself.  In order to do so, they must live a life that is set apart. A higher example is expected of them all - every musician, every singer.
b) They were prophesied on their instruments.
I fully realize that this statement will cause some to grow nervous because of those who have taken the act of prophesy out of balance. The Hebrew word used in this passage literally means that the Holy Spirit played through them. These were men who understood how to surrender themselves to the leadership of the Holy Spirit and allow Him to lead them as they played and ministered before the Lord.
This can only occur when we are consecrated for holy service and sanctified in our daily walk with Jesus!
c) They were skilled in their service
I am wholly certain that these "skilled" men knew how to play instruments. But I am even more certain that they were skilled in sensing the direction of the Spirit and living lives that were holy as He is holy!
Obviously some level of musical training is necessary for those leading the congregation into worship. But equally important - perhaps even more important -  is a spiritual life that is fully consecrated to the Lord and a musician's / singer's ability to allow the Holy Spirit to minister through them.

I wish I knew then what I know now about worship leading. I believe it would have protected me from the judgmental, cynical and snobbish attitudes that I displayed. Because these 3 philosophies that I have stopped believing are philosophies that built walls between me and the congregation.
They are philosophies that argued, "You're just complaining too much"
They are philosophies that boasted, "I know you're heart better than you do"
They are philosophies that said, "You're not good enough for my very special team of professionals"

I hope and pray that if I ever get a chance to lead another worship team, I will build philosophies that invite people into God's presence, not build walls between them and the altar!

Turn Your Talents into Profits – Sunu’s Story + A Little R & R Wednesdays - a linky party #54

Sunu Philip from Clothed in Scarlet is here sharing her story about how she's turned blogging into a business. I have personally worked with Sunu and we chat over Skype on a regular basis. She has been a tremendous inspiration to me. She is doing a challenge right now "A Beginner's Guide to Freebie Marketing". I encourage you to catch up on it. You will learn so much!

I belong to the generation that saw the advent of home computers and the internet. A proficient high-school Physics teacher, I never would have thought I’d eventually give up my salaried job to make better money online. When my son was born a few weeks premature, I realized that I needed to stay home with him. But I soon became restless and wanted to do something extra. I got my first computer when my son was a year old, and started researching ways to make an income online. My journey over the past 8 years has seen a variety of highs and lows, but I’ve learnt some valuable lessons through them all.I’ve tried a variety of tactics to make money online that include filling up surveys, reselling websites, and joining affiliate programs. Through all this, I realized that not all online opportunities are genuine. It became my mission to find legitimate ways to make money online, and that’s when God led me to what would become my vision statement – “Helping women turn their God-given talents into profits online”.I started my website, Clothed In Scarlet – not on my own volition but because God asked me to do it. {I share more about why I chose the phrase “Clothed In Scarlet” for my site here.} It is my desire to help women identify their unique strengths and find ways to implement them online, thereby blessing their families financially. You see, God has made you for a purpose, and He has given you specific talents to help you achieve it. When you identify those gifts, you can very easily turn that into a service or product and offer it online; thereby creating an income right from the comfort of your own home. That’s what I provide through Clothed In Scarlet – tools and resources to help you turn your talents into profits online. My site is just a year old, and already I have been able to use my own strengths and create products that people actually pay money for. For me, personally, I believe starting your own online business/blog and selling your own products/services will give you better traction in carving out an income for yourself. My first full-length eBook, 31 Days to Start an Online Business was downloaded over 1200 times when it was free. And I still continued to get sales even after the price went up – both on my site and on Amazon. I then created a video eCourse, 4 Weeks to Start an Online Business and set a “Pay what you want” price tag with a minimum of $1. I was pleasantly surprised when people were willing to pay much more when they saw the content within the eCourse. What I want to leave you with, is this: Yes, you can make a decent income online. It’s only a matter of finding what you are good at and establishing your business online. If you have no clue where begin, I suggest you start here. School teacher turned internet marketing consultant, Sunu Philip is a Certified SEO Specialist. She founded “Clothed in Scarlet” to help women discover their unique God-given strengths and turn their talents into profits online. She is also the author of 31 Days to Start an Online Business eBook. She offers subscribers a Free Online Business Startup Kit to help them start their online business from scratch. You can find her on FacebookTwitter, and Pinterest.

When People Wont Worship - The Worship Series

Lately a lot is being written about worship. Over the past six month so I've read Why I'd Rather Worship With the Lights On by J. Lee Grady, What's Wrong with Contemporary Worship by Terry MacAlmon Misplacing Charisma: Where Worship Lost Its Way by Matthew Sigler, and Why They Don't Sing on Sunday Anymore by Thom Schultz.

These are just 4 of dozens of articles I've read lately. And when I see a theme appear over and over and over...

...well, I start paying attention. Especially when I see these articles repeatedly shared across Facebook with dozens of comments agreeing with the writer.

People are apparently trying to say something!
It is easy for worship leaders and pastors to counteract these arguments with arguments of their own; but what is hard to ignore is the continual, repeated cry for change.

A wise man once said:

"A leader must have followers. If no one is following then you're not leading - you're simply on a stroll."The Biblical role of the worship leader is to guide people into the presence of God.

This means two things:

1. You should already know the path and destination and
2. You should walk with your followers - meaning that if you charge ahead at them at your own pace leaving them in the dust, you're still not leading.

When the people don't follow we need to do these two things:
1. Refuse to AttackOften the first reaction of leaders is grow defensive and place the blame on the congregation. While the ultimate decision to enter God's presence lays with the individual, there is much we can do to make the journey difficult or easy.
Many times, in an effort to create a better "atmosphere" we create more distractions that either discourage or even prevent people from fully entering the presence of the Lord.  Which is why we need to...
2. Humbly examine what we're doingWhen the people fail to worship, we ought to take a step back and ask some questions.
Why don't they worship?  Are we doing something that distracts them from the One we are worshiping? What can we change to help them enter the presence of God easier and more fully?Where is the general focus during the service?Have we relied on props to do what only the Holy Spirit can do?

For the past year I have wanted to write on this subject, but simply didn't feel it was the right time. Yesterday I heard the Lord speak to me that it was time to lay aside the articles I had planned for the next two months and write from the heart about the obvious struggle we see in the worship service.
We will explore the arguments being presented as to why people don't worship, the celebrity culture we see, how worship historically changes in times of revival, hidden dangers we face in leading worship, and what worship really is.
I hope you will join me on this journey as we seek to return to the simplicity of God's presence!

What I've Learned About Food - One Healthy Thing Fridays

3 weeks ago I began the Elimination Diet.
My purpose with this diet was not to lose weight. It was to try to determine if my diet was causing stress on my body in some ways.

Now that I am now in the process of re-introducing foods, I have found the following to be true:

1. Food for me is a multi-layered concept.  During the 3 weeks of eliminating foods, I found eating to be dull and completely unenjoyable.

2. During the 3 week diet, I learned a new level of discipline that I believe has transformed my relationship with food.

It was grueling.

I do confess to a couple of minor slip-ups. And I do mean minor. Honestly, I surprised myself because rather than slipping up and using it as an excuse to binge or throw in the towel, I managed to keep my "cheat" extremely minimal and then in the same day get back on board.

That is a new step for me.

What is the one healthy thing I am going to do this week?I confess to not keeping up with the exercise. I knew this would be hard habit to form. In my defense, we have had some very bad weather, which prevented my walks. It didn't, however, have to prevent me from exercising completely.
That said, my one healthy thing this week is to get back to working out.

What is one healthy thing you plan to do this week?Leave a comment below and tell us! Linking up with Christian Mommy Blogger and these other great parties Don't forget to enter the You Are Loved Giveaway!

You Are Loved - Good Morning Girls Summer Study + Giveaway!

#youareloved
Angela from Good Morning Girls has been keeping a big secret.

She has been collaborating with Sally Clarkson on a book that we are using this summer for the Good Morning Girls Summer Book Study.

This summer study is special for a few reasons: 1. This is Angela's first book ever.
She launches her first book with a timely reminder of this vital foundational truth of God's unconditional love. In a generation where acceptance is based on looks, size, status, career path, or popularity, God's love is based purely and solely on one thing: He created us. Period. That's it.

2. Good Morning Girls has launched a new #Get1Give1 campaign.
What does that mean? Well, it's simple. When you purchase a copy of You Are Loved, one copy will be given to a sweet lady in one of our international groups. You see, Angela and Sally want to bless ladies who live in countries where economic pressure might prevent them from joining in this study.  Isn't that awesome?? You Are Loved will be translated in a number of languages - which is why they have chosen to not publish the book in a traditional method. So, your purchase of You Are Loved will help our sisters around the world to be able to read this life-changing book!

3. You Are Loved is the launch of a dream.
The profits from You Are Loved will go toward a dream Angela and Sally have had to bring the leaders of the Good Morning Girls International groups together for training. The funds will go to feed and house about 20 ladies for an intensive training in how to further equip women.

As I type this, I have tears in my eyes.
As many of you know, a few years ago I joined the leadership team for Good Morning Girls and I both lead the Croatian chapter and assist with the translators. I can personally vouch for the authenticity of Angela, Whitney, Jen and Courtney and the impact that Good Morning Girls is having all over the world!

Also, I can tell you first hand the number of ladies here in Croatia, Bosnia and Serbia who have been impacted in a profound way over the past year through the studies we have done.

I hope you will join our study this summer.

There are hundreds of groups to choose from in dozens of demographics all over the world. To find out more about the upcoming enrollment, like the Good Morning Girls Facebook page.

For more information, you can comment below or contact me personally.

Now I am giving away two copies of the Kindle version! That's right! Two ladies will receive a copy of You Are Loved, and two women in an international group will receive a free copy in their own translation! (I loved typing that!!!!)

This is an easy-entry giveaway. Simply subscribe to A Little R & R, Missional Call and/or Good Morning Girls. I don't want anything to stand in the way of you entering to receive a free copy of this amazing book!!
  a Rafflecopter giveaway

Miracle upon Miracle

See these beautiful faces????  These are the lovely women I work with everyday
and they are the reason why Good Morning Girls - Croatia, Bosnia and Serbia
is what it is today! I am so blessed to know them and call them my friends!

No words can adquately describe the feeling I have as I look back on the past 2 years of leading Good Morning Girls - Croatia, Bosnia and Serbia.

Miracle after miracle has given by God until I am more convinced than ever before that literally nothing is beyond His power to reach this region formerly known as Yugoslavia.

Today I am over at Good Morning Girls sharing about the Croatian, Bosnian and Serbian chapter of the Good Morning Girls online Bible Study.

You can read the rest of the article here!
