Movable Feast: When NOLA friends overnight 150 lbs. of crawfish & 240 gulf oysters, and host a boil on a Brooklyn rooftop. BONUS: Me working for my (oyster) supper.

Like grief itself, tonight’s Modern Loss and Six-Word-Memoir event was belly laughs one moment + mascara-running the next. If #LossInSix project is the modern face of community storytelling, me and my six words are all in. (at Refinery29 New York)

Good Share, Bro.

Today my bro would be 39.

Thirty-effing-nine

What would he look like at this age? Which career paths would he have taken? How many tattoos would he have? (And how many baby mamas?)

The answers and questions may be moot, but I do know that Phil’s 18 years of life were not spent quietly or in any corner. The kid was going to raves and music festivals years before I was.  He introduced me to skateboarding, water-balloon launchers and the music of the Beasties, Slick Rick and Dr. Dre. Taught me to fill ice cube trays with hot water (because science) and to properly inhale cigarette smoke (because misguided).

Despite his absence—or perhaps because of it—he remains larger than life. He will always be the person from whom I learned the basics of sharing (treehouses, the remote, friends,) as well as the basics of grief.

Thinking of you, little brother, and will be raising a glass (of Miller beer, what else?) to your legacy tonight.

I Art NYC

image

Last night’s annual Museum Mile event meant chalk-drawing in the center of a car-free Fifth Ave., breakdancing lessons at the Museum of the City of New York, naked body-painted people at the Guggenheim and watching the sunset from the Met’s rooftop.

A cultural free-for-all that was all for freeeee.

Just 9000 more reasons why I Art NYC.

Last month, I participated in a Community Word Project event at PS 279. Through the poetry of second graders, I discovered Bronx landmarks like High Bridge and Grand Concourse. (Also got schooled on P-Square and Monster High.) Don’t know if my lines of inquiry or synonym suggestions enriched their poems, but each of those kids enriched my world view. Looking forward to the next CWP volunteer event…and to learning more than the chorus of “The Beat of my City.”
