When the sky is this pretty, you almost don’t mind the sun setting at 4 effing 40. Yeah, almost.

“I lost my fiancee on April 19th. Our four-year anniversary was May 20th. We were supposed to get married on August 9th … endless dates of events that are never going to happen. I’ve been reading all your ModernLoss.com columns and they make me feel like I’m not going crazy and that that it’s ‘normal’ to not care about anything going on around me.

I experience such strong waves of sadness sometimes that I don’t know what to do with myself. I’m so tired of crying, being sad, furious, frustrated. It’s all so exhausting, but I want to tell you that scrolling through your Tumblr and reading your columns have provided a small shimmer of hope. I’ll probably forget this feeling five minutes from now when I’m feeling desperate and alone, but thank you. Thank you for proving that there is life after death.”

Thanksgiving Day in California intersected family legacies and new traditions: whiskey from my dad’s late father, dinner on china from mom’s late mother…along with the introduction of Mr. Present to my parents and a wine-fueled game of Heads Up.

Autumn in New York when you’re in love is a film set where leaves fall on cue and there’s never a bathroom line and your scarf is just the right kind of warm-but-not-too-warm.

My sister and father both died unexpectedly this year, within three months of each other. I was already working on a book about my challenged relationship with my sister, and it’s changed considerably since her death.

I recently ordered your book and read it over the past two days. Thank you for sharing it with the world, and with me. Finding pieces of my grief in your writing and in the absurdities of the aftermath makes me feel less alone. Your book inspires me to keep writing my story. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
