Morse v Lewis

'Do you think she's lying, Lewis?'
'I'm not so sure now.'
'Come off it man, when you're as old as I am you'll recognise a liar a mile off!'
Lewis remained doubtful: he was by several years the older man anyway.

I'm revisiting 'Last Bus To Woodstock' right now - mainly to look at technique - but this little exchange came as quite a shock to me. Lewis the older man!

This was the first Morse novel (1975), and the tv series began in 1987.

So now it makes me want to re-read one of Colin Dexter's later books - to see if he readjusted to mirror the casting in the tv screenplays. Poetic licence and all that!

Sherlock

I'm reading 'The Complete Sherlock Holmes' at the moment. I love it. So many short stories I had never heard of.

I've been investigating the reviews on Amazon, and I wonder if Conan Doyle appreciated to what extent he had captured the 'soap' quality that continually draws an audience back - in this case to that little 'bubble' in Baker Street?

As one reviewer puts it: "I am tempted to compare this book to coming home on a frosty evening to a comfortable chair infront of a roaring log fire."

Certainly, the plots are unfathomable, and Holmes' reasoning beyond comprehension - so I guess it's the 'comfy chair' that does it for me.

I also wonder if Conan Doyle was on a bet to use the word 'singular' a thousand times in print!
