Podcasting Stories Wanted

I'm working on a podcasting project and looking for stories about podcasting that fit within the following categories:

A "Bad" Podcasting Experience - Have a funny (keep it light) story about something that went horribly wrong during a podcast session? A bad guest? Your Podcasting Origin Story - How did you get starting in podcasting? A "Because Of My Podcast" Story - What has happened to you that wouldn't have happened had you not had a podcast? Marketing Via Podcasting - Are you marketing yourself or spreading an idea via podcasting? Diversity In Podcasting - Are you part of a group that is underrepresented in traditional media and using podcasting to connect to people within that group? Guesting On The Podcasts Of Others - Are you using the podcasts of others to connect with people, market yourself, or spread a message?

If you've for a story that fits into one of the above categories, please contact me and I'll send you a link to upload audio of it.

The Podcast T-Shirt Business

I posted some merch photos on the Big Podcast Instagram account and got a comment from Kyle at Gagglepod Studios that this story would make a good podcast.

So here it is.

Branded merchandise isn't for everybody, but if you have the right audience, it can be a substantial part of your business.

In this episode, I talk about how many "musicians" are known more for their t-shirts and other merch than they are for their music. I also talk about how you can easily as t-shirts and other merch to your business.

Want an example? Big Podcast t-shirts

OOPS! I Screwed Up!

I subscribe to my own podcasts, not because I'm some kind of narcissist or I'm trying to boost my stats, but because when I see the download happen on my podcatcher, I know the feed is working OK.

A couple of days ago, I happened to actually listen to the episode I downloaded

The edits were sloppy. Then the episode "ended," but I kept going...and I realized I had uploaded a partial edit with raw tape at the end.

Fortunately, I didn't say anything embarrassing.

I'd already found a BIG problem in the episode that I wanted to talk about before I realized the editing mistake. On this episode, I talk about that as well as "rules" you should always follow when recording your podcast.

The "Pod Decks" Switcheroo - Part 2 (w/ Larry Roberts)

On the previous episode, I talked about Pod Decks (and used them) with Dave Jackson from School Of Podcasting.

I like the idea of Pod Decks, so on this episode, I asked the same Pod Decks questions to Larry Roberts from Readily Random just to see what would happen and also to get a second opinion on the value of using Pod Decks as a podcasting tool.

SPOILER ALERT: Pod Decks is a cool system that has a lot of flexibility and will allow you to go places with your interviewing that you probably wouldn't go otherwise. Pod Decks alone won't make you a better interviewer, that's something that only happens from spending time behind the mic, but it's a fun tool that will help you create some great episodes of your podcast.

The "Pod Decks" Switcheroo - Part 1 (w/ Dave Jackson)

I talked about Pod Decks on the previous episode.

Here's what it says when you go to the Pod Decks website:

I created Pod Decks to be a tool for any podcaster whether you are just starting out or a pro-podcaster to help grow you audience, have deeper conversations, and set yourself apart from all the other interview podcasts online.

Sounds good, right?

On this episode, I put Pod Decks to the test with Dave Jackson from School Of Podcasting.

3 Easy "Tricks" To Do Better Podcast Interviews

I done hundreds of podcast and radio interviews. Some have been great and some not-so-great...

In this episode, I share three "tricks" that will help you instantly become a better interviewer. I also talk about a product for podcasters, Pod Decks, designed to help you ask better questions.

On the new two episodes, I'll be putting Pod Decks to the test. To make sure you don't miss this, subscribe to Build A Big Podcast.

How To Make People Listen To Your Podcast

You probably have a podcast that you don't really like, but you can't help but check in on from time to time, because the host is so passionate, or interesting, or otherwise compelling.

What's with these podcasts? Why do we care?

This episode of Build A Big Podcast is about that – what makes people care about (and listen to) your podcast.

Naked Models (And Your Podcast)

I had a friend who's an audio engineer for a major rock act and, when he wasn't on tour one season, did a stint as a "college professor" teaching audio engineering.

He was vulgar as fuck.

Sorry, I had to.

This guy would go in the classroom and say all sorts of stuff, always followed by, "Oh, sorry, that's the road talking."

That kind of language is standard operating procedure when it comes to the touring business.

We have similar things when it comes to podcasting. And if you don't watch yourself, it will get you in trouble.

On this episode I talk about working around this issue. I also share a couple of stories about naked models.

The Big Podcast Submarine

I'm back. I never actually went anywhere, but I'm been working on other podcasting projects which have kept me from this podcast more than I'd prefer.

If you're looking for more "podcasting content" from me that isn't a podcast, check out my Instagram page. Or read my book on podcasting. :)

But don't worry, new episodes of Build A Big Podcast are coming...

The Podcast Academy

Is it Podcast Academy or The Podcast Academy? Or maybe it's the Academy of Podcasters?

This episode is about The Podcast Academy. I wrote it off initially, but I'm giving it a second look now that Rob Greenlee is involved.

It's still a very new organization and, like many podcasts, they seem to be figuring things out as they go. Still, I think The Podcast Academy might be worth a punt.

More thoughts in this episode...
