“Back in Antigua, if you need a place to stay, your family will welcome you with open arms. In America, they’ll welcome you, but you’ve got a time limit.”

Early in the spring, I photographed a young woman playing catch with a boy in Washington Square Park. It turned out that she was his babysitter, and was “warming him up for tonight’s game.” I had every intention of sharing it, but the photo somehow got lost in the shuffle. “What was your favorite thing about your mother?”

“What’s the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen?”
“It’s really hard to put into words. My girlfriend and I were visiting the Franz Joseph Glacier in New Zealand, and we really wanted to take a helicopter ride at sunset. But all the tour companies were telling us that they weren’t allowed to fly in the evening. Finally we found this sketchy company that didn’t seem too concerned about safety standards, and they agreed to take us for a lot of money. We thought really hard about it, and agreed that it was a risk we had to take. We were really scared the entire ride, but when we broke through the clouds, and saw the sunset reflecting off the glacier, it was the most beautiful thing that either of us had ever seen.”
