The Pit and the Pendulum: Edgar Allan Poe and the Short Story
Bound in glorious purple, this new edition of Edgar Allan Poe’s tales from Oxford World’s Classics reprints some neglected Poe tales among the usual classics
Edgar Allan Poe has a claim to being the originator of the modern short story. Not only has the earliest use of that very term, ‘short story’, been attributed to him, but he stands at the beginning of a long tradition of short fiction which would only take off in British publishing in the closing decades of the ni...

When A Girl Does Acquiesce
When a girl does acquiesce
To a lover’s caress
And undress,
The honest man must confess
That sometimes he

And the thought,
The silk and lace,
The chase

And the fall

There Was A Young Academic Called Moore
There was a young academic called Moore
Who did her studies adore.

Ghosts;
Walking through the rooms
Of an empty house.
Seeking the past.
Their silent breathing,
No more than dust motes
Floating in afternoon sunlight.
Their shadows,
Moving in the no wind.
Old footprints appearing in the dust,
And going nowhere.
Nowhere,
Now.
The ghosts of past happiness.

I know a young lady called Ling
Who is extremely left-wing.
But on meeting a man called Night
Who is of the centre-right
I confess they had a fling!
A Philosophical Young Lady Called Mable
A philosophical young lady called Mable
Dressed in the colour sable.
When a young man named Guy
Asked her “why?”
She said “Existence is merely a fable!”.
There Was A Young Lady Called Moore
There was a young lady called Moore
Who all the men adore.
When she fluttered her eye
At a priest named Guy
He thought on the Canon Law!
Pontificate
There was a young lady called Kate
Who liked to pontificate.
She insisted that she was right
And every night
Kate would prate and prate!

I was pleased to receive the below review of my collection of poems, “The Writer’s Pen and Other Poems”:
“Having read previous poetry collections by the author, I was eager to read this one. I was not disappointed. This is a great collection of thought-provoking poems. “Indefinable” is a particular favourite of mine from this collection”.
