Finally beginning work on a selected poems

After lots of excuses to myself, I have determined to finally sit down and draw together a Selected Poems. Those of you who follow this blog, will know that I have previously mentioned my intention to do this, however, excuses are now at an end and I shall be noticeable by my absence as I work on this project.

To be frank, I enjoy writing which does, on the whole come easily to me. In contrast pulling together a poetry collection and/or selection is a chore, (albeit a pleasant one), hence me...

Roses Smell Sweeter In Childhood

Roses smell sweeter in childhood
Their scent
Being natural and good.
I repent
Of scentless flowers
And myriad hours
Spent trying to grow
What ought not
To grow,
And would,
If I could
Spurn these flowers, purchased on a whim
And return
To a time ere Adam did sin
With Eve.
But I can only grieve
And count the cost
Of Paradise lost.

(The reference to paradise lost pertains to Milton’s fine poem of the same title).

When a young man named Jame

When a young man named Jame
Said, “I always get the blame!”,
And I replied, “but it was you!”,
He said, “that may well be true,
But I always get the blame!”.

There was a young lady named Rose

There was a young lady named Rose
Who did her toes expose
To a vicar called Paul,
Who fell off a wall,
Which distressed that young lady named Rose.

Suncream

I shall wear suncream
Today, and dream
Of the young women
I see
In clothes
Which expose
Much more than a knee.
But reader, cease your inane grinning,
For ’tis too hot for sinning . . .

When A Young Man Named Mack

When a young man named Mack
Said, “lets take a step back”,
I made stern reply,
“No fool am I,
There’s a cliff at our back!”.

Climate Change

Thursday 25th July is predicted to be the hottest July day on record here in the UK (https://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/uk-weather-london-set-to-swelter-in-recordbreaking-heat-up-to-37c-a4195211.html), and yet some people (fortunately a dwindling minority) continue to persist in blindly arguing either that there is no such thing as climate change or, if there is, that we humans have very little (if any impact) on the earth’s climate. Humans patently do have a massive impact on the world’s cli...

A Young Man Named Guy

A young man named Guy
Said, “a Communist am I”
As his housemaid called Jane
Poured him the very best champagne,
Which caused poor guy to sigh.

When A Man Named Matt

When a man named Matt
Said, “I don’t fancy that”,
I replied, “neither do I,
Lets give it to Guy,
He’ll really like that hat!”.
