You spoiled, entitled, ungrateful little brat! You have everything handed to you on a silver platter and you squander it. You’re given the world and you can’t appreciate it because you haven’t had to work for anything! So now you’ve decided that the one thing you want is my daughter, my child, mine. What I made. What I created. You could talk about what a great lay she is and try to get a response from me all you want. But guess what? I am actually quite literally above your pay grade, which means that I know that you believe that you are in love with her, as wrong as you may be.
I think this is my favorite monologue, ever, and probably the only time Fitz got dressed down by multiple black people in one show. I can’t remember another cinematic moment that has allowed a black man to talk to an avatar of white male power in this way without the black man being lynched or killed for it. We’ll see what next season brings!

Starting out [as an actor], the primary objective is to get a job, to get a role, to get some sort of employment, to be heard. Then as you get the face and the name recognition, all the things you were fighting for, then a funny thing happens, you get more selective. More people know you, more people want you for different jobs. They want you not for your dreams but to have their dreams come through. If those two things do not meet then it is not a job that I am going to accept because I still have dreams and aspirations. I still want to meet challenges and be fulfilled. That means I will have to say ‘no’ to some jobs because I just don’t want to be paid, I want to be fulfilled. I want to give of myself. I want something that requires a little of my soul and my spirit, that is how I’ve always been. If I take a job, I don’t like to feel like I’m lying to the public.
