How To Make 2016 Resolutions That Actually Work

NEW Year Resolutions

‘Failing to plan is planning to fail.’

Linda woke up this week in the morning and stared deeply at the mirror. “Oh my God. Am I really that fat?” she said to her sleepy husband. “Jack, I swear this new year I’m gonna lose this weight! I can feel that 2016 is my year to do this.”

And then she went on to update her Facebook status, bought a copy of a ‘How to Lose Weight Without Effort,’ and goes to the gym three times in January 2016. End of the story!

The same conversation is repeated again end of December 2016. And by the way, poor Jack is fade up with this annual weight lose conversation. As a good husband he has no choice but to support his wife.

Does your new year resolutions end up just like Linda’s?

Each New Year we sent each other best wishes for the year. Many people hope that the New Year will be better than the previous. This year, 2015, in January you also made some New Year resolutions about things you want to stop doing, and things you want to start doing. Some of you even take time to reflect and pray for the New Year. There is absolutely nothing wrong with all this. This is a great attitude.

I always wonder if all this effort produces the desired results on the promises. I wonder if each New Year turns to be a better year. Think about it seriously. Year after year many people do this. Many people religiously make resolutions to do this and that. If these things were really working then each year was going to turn out to be better for each one of them. Isn’t it? Why is it we always come back, I mean 90% of the people, to the same point; ‘a bad year.’ It’s rare to see at the end of the year someone saying ‘What a good year!’

You see, every year is exactly the same, 365 days made of minutes and seconds. If you want to change the year, change what you do. It does not matter whether you have 122 resolutions or if you gold plate them to the wall right at the front door. What you do ‘each minute of the year’ makes the difference, especially the things that depend on your choices. So, do not look up somewhere for a good year, make one! Make 2016 a great year by taking the advice below on ‘How to Make 2016 Resolutions That Actually Work.’

Ladies and gentlemen, make 2016 the best year of your life. You need to make life happen, not life happen to you. First you need to know and believe beyond doubt that you are in charge of your life. The power of life and death, failure and success, to live the lifestyle you want, to have inner fulfilment, to live your dream and conquer, is from within and is within reach. Do not allow other peoples systems to run your life – economic systems, social systems, political systems or financial systems. Do not be a victim. Take over your life and turn these systems to work for you, instead of against you.

Life Does Not Just Happen

Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe – Abraham Lincoln.

In order to carry out you calling successfully in 2016, you need to manage your life. Life does not just happen. You have to plan your life, organise your life, lead yourself and have monitoring and control measures.

Easy Plugin for AdSense by Unreal

Remember to make balanced resolutions. A good balance includes career or business, family, health, spiritual, finance, networks or friends, fun or holiday, physical, mental, mental or intellectual, training or development, social, and mentors or advisors.

The two most common characters of ‘super-achievers’ are 1) relentless commitment to constant learning and 2) have detailed clear goals, with a plan of action on how to achieve them. No matter how much passion you have, if you do not have a clear plan of action you will end up going in circles. After ten years you will find yourself right where you started, just like Linda.

How to Make 2016 Resolutions That Actually Work

“By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.”

Here are some critical steps and points on How to Make 2016 Resolutions That Actually Work:

Have a purpose or vision or aim. Make it quantifiable. Do not just aim to ‘lose weight’ like Linda but aim to ‘lose 10kg by December 2016.’ Be specific!
Assess your current position. Know where you are and the state of your situation.
Develop and list the steps or goals that must be taken to reach the vision.
Setting goals is not about writing a “wish list” in January and stick it on the fridge or wall, and for the rest of the year wait for your life to change. Your plan must be crystal clear. Draw a map of exactly how you are going to get there. Put management and control systems necessary to operationalize your plan, to keep you on track, to measure and monitor performance.
Identify your resource. What resources; finance, networks, friends, skills, mentors or time does it require? Allocate these to each goal. In most cases you have to spend a lot of effort and time developing a skill that will then take you to your final purpose. Go ahead and do it. Remember this is a life purpose, it won’t happen in a day.
Do a cost-benefit analysis. As you put up the plan constantly do a cost benefit analysis. Of course choose a route that gives you maximum benefit with minimum effort. But it’s rare to find such a route. Some benefit or efforts are short term others are long term. Identify the risks, things to watch out for and obstacles along the way. Identifying them is not good enough, put in a plan to deal with them. This is called risk management.
In the same way list the benefits, rewards and advantages that you will harvest along the way. These are important to motivate you in days when things are not good.
Finally, fit in the ‘motivational pressure.’ Something that will make you not turn back on you goal. If you want to lose weight? Sign up for a marathon like the comrades in 7 months in an exciting foreign country, and book the non-refundable flights and accommodation now. If you want to really go on holiday in future, set the date and pay a non-refundable deposit now.

Don’t jump on Facebook to announce your New Year resolution. It gives you a short term ego buzz now (“Look at me! I’m so awesome!”), but does nothing to change your behaviour. If you want to engage friends, be real. Do not make it a show.

Most of all, wishful words alone will get you there. Nearly everyone fails their new year’s resolutions. Just saying words doesn’t make a thing happen. It is the action that accompanies the words.

Ensure that your support systems are in plan; the right associates, the right advisers and the right mentors. Your environment matters! In short, create the right environment that supports the achievement of your New Year resolutions!

‘For which of you, wishing to build a farm building, does not first sit down and calculate the cost [to see] whether he has sufficient means to finish it?’ Luke 14:28

I wish you the most awesome and prosperous new year ever!

Change Your Life by Changing Your Mind

mind

The mind is so powerful. It is your engine directing your life. Hence your life is controlled by your mind. If you change your mind you change your life.

You are the result of your mind habits and your future is shaped by the way you will continue to think.

Here are some few negative habits that you should consider changing if you want to realise your dream.

Feeling the world owes you something

Why should the world owe you anything? Your country owes you nothing! Get over it. Common sense should tell you that you have to work for everything and that’s what you should expect. Looking for opportunities based on their own merits sounds insane. It’s a poverty mentality.

Feeling sorry for yourself

Bad things happen. A normal person regrets and feel sorry for it. However the longer you stay feeling sorry for yourself the more destructive it is. Get over it and move on.

Avoiding change

‘Many people want to progress in life but they do not want to change.’ Progress and success are accompanied by change. If you do not change you remain the same and in the same place.

Change is inevitable. Embrace it. Adapt and move forward.

Repeating mistakes

Doing the same thing and expect different results. ‘The definition of insanity is doing something over and over again and expecting a different result- Einstein. Accept responsibility. Learn from past mistakes and do not repeat them. The truly resilient take this truth to heart.

Envy and Resentment

Envy, jealousy and resentment suck your energy. They do not contribute anything positive. Do not compare yourself to anyone. Each person is unique and produces unique results. If you feel cheated or let down learn to forgive and move on.

Trying to please everyone

It feels good to make someone happy. In addition they praise you. If you are insecure it becomes addictive. You are constantly trying to make everyone happy to get a quick good feeling. By the end of the day you find that you are trying to please everyone except you. Be kind but learn to say no. You cannot be liked by everyone.

Worst Financial Mistakes that people make in their 20s

Millennials

They think education and talent are enough to become super successful. And ‘I will never touch a book again as long as I live.’ They only find themselves outdated with time.
They neglect their health. With a youthful body there are fewer health problems, hence many cut down on health maintenance. They are reminded when they have run into trouble but by that time it will be very difficult to recover.
They don’t start saving money. They think, ‘I still have time. I will save when I earn enough money.’ But the truth is there will never be enough money. And the best time to save is now!
They equate happiness with money. Because they had limited access to money as children, they will assume that money is the key to all happiness.
They give up when things get tough. They think there is ‘always’ another road that is easier. The reality is in most cases there is not alternative and you have to breakthrough.
They let others define them. They do not take time to discover themselves, hence the environment dictate who they are and who they eventually become.
They are impatient. They want all, and they want it now!
They try to please everyone. Their rule is ‘you have to be nice to everyone.’ Seriously, you cannot please everyone. It’s practically impossible. You will always find some who oppose you or with different taste.
They think all friendships can last forever. Friendships are seasonal. Some seasons are longer than others. As a result they get stuck with outdated friendships that do not fit their current goals and direction, thereby creating a negative force that weighs them down.
They think moving somewhere new will solve their problems.
They create bubbles around themselves.
They see things in black and white. They do not realise that there is also the grey areas. Actually there is a rainbow of colours.
They look for their ‘soul mate.’ A soul mate is a myth and a teen fantasy.
They try planning years in advance.
They think they’re the only one of their friends struggling.
Instead of building a solid personal economic track record, they easily fall into and fight causes they have little idea of. This can be in religious, political and social activism. They only to discover when it’s too late that they have lost time, building other people’s wealth.
‘Your first salary determines life time wealth.’ This is not true. The size of your salary is one of the many things that are involved in your wealth growth. Wealth growth is to do with accumulation. Accumulation is the difference between income and expense.

Which Doors Are You Facing

open door

A door has many purposes. It allows and restricts access to different spaces. They protect the inside from outside interference. And at times we use them to lock bad things away. So when a door presents itself you need to understand it in order to make good use of it. Otherwise it is better to just ignore certain doors. Here are few thoughts on doors of opportunities that may come your way.

Orientation Of Opening

Knowing which direction a door opens makes a big difference and saves you time and embarrassment. Some doors open backwards and others forward. Some doors slide sideways and others go upwards. Are you opening your door the right way? Did you take time to study the orientation of the opening?

Transparent And Visible Doors

Have you even bumped into a closed glass door? One minute you think there is nothing and you discover that it’s actually a door. Many people miss it, but because you have bumped into in, you now know it exists. When you suspect that there is an invisible door, you approach it slowly and carefully with your eyes wide open ready to identify it.

Thick Door And Thin Doors

Some doors give access to valuables items. They are very thick and heavy, requiring complex mechanical and electronic combinations to open. Even if you try to force it, it will not open, but if you have the secret combination it’s very easy. If you are facing such a door better sit down, either get the combination or seek the help of experts. On the other hand some doors are thin and not strong. You can kick it open in your sleep. In these you are unlikely to find something of value inside.

Automatic Doors And Manual Doors

These are activated by your presence. They automatically open as you approach. Your effort is not required to open or close them. These rare opportunities are delivered right into your hands. But remember they are rare. Some doors have electronic mechanisms that insure controlled access. Think about the gates for entering the stadium. They allow a single person at a time. These doors are not for crowds and operate in controlled environments.

Doors Opened By Someone

You do not have to open Some doors. They are opened by someone already inside. If you are not known by someone inside, they will not open for you. In this case you have to be connected, knock on the door and it will open. Build relationships with those inside before you think of knocking.

Doorless Ways

These are basically passages with not restrictions for going in and going out. You will find every tom and dick wondering up and down. And wait a minute, what about boomed gates which restrict vehicles but allow pedestrians. Some opportunities will not open for you. They are for other people. Do not waste time on these doors, get the right vehicle first.

There Are Double Doors, Triple Doors

There are doors so wide that even a bulldozer can fit. You can never miss this door. These are the doors many people are looking for. However, the wider the door the more crowded the opportunity. There are also narrow doors, doors so narrow that you have to squash yourself in order to fit. You will wonder whether that was meant to be a door or not. Narrow doors are easy to miss and they are always full of surprises.

The Sound Of The Door

Most doors make sounds when they open and close depending on many factors, whether positive or negative. Now, the sound of a door tells you something about the door and where it leads. A garage door sliding upwards sounds different from a glass sliding door. Listen to what your door is saying.

Doors Are Made Of Different Materials

There are wooden doors, steel doors, aluminium doors, glass doors etc. There are good reasons for each choice of shape and material. It has to do with economics, safety, durability, overall building or surrounding, user friendliness etc. The type of materials used says a lot about the purpose of the door and what is inside. Look at the room you are in right now.

Spiritual Doors

This one is on another level. There are spiritual doors. Once activated by your obedience they can result in abundance and blessing. Disobedience can lead you to curses and the spiritual underworld that can shut down your life just like that. Which spiritual doors are you opening by your obedience or disobedience?

Finally Not All Doors Open To Opportunities

As you have already noticed, some doors leads to misfortunes, tragedy and calamity that you are not prepared for. You will suffer huge lose if you enter. On the other hand some doors lead to nowhere. It’s just a door that leads to a brick wall. It’s not worth the effort.

Now, what door are you facing?

What Are The Most Common Mistakes First-Time Entrepreneurs Make?

Entrepreneurs Mastakes

“Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results.”

Is your business battling to stay about the water? Are you planning to start your very own business? Did your business take some hard knocks that brought it down? Here is the summary of the most common mistakes that entrepreneurs submitted on Quora by over 3,900 followers. By learning from them you can avoid disasters and put your business back on track. Enjoy the fruits of your labour.

Start Your Business When You Are Broke

The number one rule is ‘Don’t start a company if you’re broke.’ This is different from having no money. If your daily basic needs are covered and you have no money, you are not broke. You have food and shelter. But if you have kids and a wife and bills to be paid, and you have no money, then you are broke. This is the worst time to start a business.

Stupid Ideas

We all have blind spots. That’s why your ideas are great ideas. It’s hard to admit that they won’t work unless you involve a third party. The best proof of a great business idea is profits. That’s the best way you can tell you have a good idea. And do not confuse revenues and profits. You can receive huge revenues and still make a loss.

Over-Promise And Under-Deliver

Because you want to enter the market, there is a tendency to promise heaven to the prospective customers. However after the first experience check if your clients come back for more or refer others to you. In simple terms do not give crap service.

Don’t Communicate With Clients

Follow up on your client and check on them. As soon as you meet a potential customer, have an entire system in place to follow up. As soon as you deliver a proposal, follow up, as soon as you deliver a product, follow up. Even when you are in the middle of completing a project, follow up.

You call and just say, “I always want to make sure I’m doing my best for you. Is all ok?” And then listen. And then say good-bye so you don’t waste their time. Do that and you have a client for life.

Hiring People (Especially Family Members)

Most start-ups don’t need to hire that many people. It exciting to have a crowd around you, but if that crowd is sucking money out your business in return for nothing, then think again. Once you hire someone make them earn their money. Beware of hiring fiends or relative who you won’t be able to fire easily, otherwise you will be running a charity organisation. If you find yourself with low or no sales and you have people playing solitaire in the office, then think again.

Clear Roles

The more clear the roles and instructions, the more productive the team. Clear roles and responsibilities get rid of office politics and strife. Avoid ambiguous positions. Make it simple. Make the structure simple. Do not hope that people will ‘figure it out.’

Don’t Test

If you have a product idea, and you love it, and all your friends tell you it is great, don’t forget to test it. It is the market that has the final say not your friends. And remember your friend and families always lie to you so as not to discourage you. If nobody likes your idea, then you have a bad idea. If a lot of people like it, then it’s a great idea. Good entrepreneurs are risk-adverse. Before you risk, test. Before you leave your job, have customers. Before you hire people, have money in the bank. Before you even create you product, test it. Smart people test. Smart people don’t take stupid risks.

Get Real Advice

They said that ‘the best friend is the one who has the courage to tell you that your baby is ugly.’ If you are not brutally honest with yourself, you can’t make informed decisions that will truly improve your business. You will hide behind excuses and spin stories to yourself explaining away why you have to keep doing the rest of the things on the list. You need a healthy dose of scepticism (not the same as self-doubt or lack of self-belief) to make real forward progress.

Stop Counting Your Eggs Before They Hatch.

If an investor has expressed interest in investing but has not called back in a few weeks that is not money in the bank. A potential customer who says he may pay if your product did such-and-such is not money in the bank. Do not over-value potential.

Stop Trying To Get Around Paying Service Providers

If you owe someone, simply pay on time. If you don’t they will come after you and suck your time and energy. You cannot afford to build a business and at the same time be an expert in ducking creditors.

Stop Pretending To Be Superman

Do not mix up confidence and arrogance. A leader doesn’t need to be perfect. Don’t pretend that everything is always fine and that you never make mistakes. You might think it makes you look strong and brave, or makes people look up to you. You don’t have to flaunt your failures, but hiding them is unnecessary too. Just talk about them honestly and ask people how they think you could improve.

Stop Being So Secretive About Your Idea

You may be scared someone will steal your idea. Don’t. Such a beginner mistake, not even an amateur mistake, it is just a total rookie mistake! You will never find product-market fit by keeping your idea secret until it is perfect. You need to talk about your idea to a lot of people. Because honestly, your idea probably sucks just as much as you are secretly afraid it might. One of the reasons many founders are so secretive about their ideas is because they don’t want to be told it is a stupid idea. This is just denial. Don’t be in denial. Anyhow, the people you are so afraid will steal your idea are too busy working on their own big ideas to steal yours.

Stop Falling In Love With Your Idea Before Product-Market Fit

The more confident an early stage start up founder is, the more concerned I am for them. Of course they can’t just go around telling people they are scared to death all the time. But when you are an early stage founder and really in love with what you built, you will never seek the changes necessary to really make your product great.

Stop Using Your Lack Of Funding As An Excuse

There are many things you can do without funds. Many founders cover up their laziness and weakness using ‘lack of funds.’ You do not need funds to be smart. You do not need funds to be outstanding. You need to be creative. Richard Branson built a billion dollar business without venture capital. You are making up excuses, go find solutions.

Fired Too Slow

If someone promised in the interview to deliver the finished product in three months and you find the system still not running 12 months later, it means it’s you who has a leadership problem.  You have lost time, the work has not been done, your client is not happy and you are losing your reputation by creating your business identity as a ‘crap company.’ Get rid of time wasters as soon as possible. Besides digging a financial hole for you, they also spoil your good employees. In a big company, having a team of 30 with some folks not holding their own is fine, perhaps.  In a young, fast growing tech company, it’s unacceptable. Each individual’s effort is critical.

Took Rejection Too Personally

If you do not make it first time, ‘try, try, try again.’ If you lose a customers keep moving do not focus on the loss. Find out how to do better next time. Remember opportunities always come.

Get An Office Too Soon

Do you really need that fancy office? Is it to have a good company image or to make yourself feel good? Working from home save you rental costs.

Wasted Time “Networking”

Do not waste time with everyone who asks to have coffee with you in the name of ‘networking.’ Honestly in many cases the time you spend is not worth the conversation that goes on. Before a meeting with these potential clients/partners ask for an agenda and clear objectives for the meeting so that it is clear there is a reason to meet. Some people may not like you for that, but remember your charge out rate per hour that you have saved. Conversations with people who have a clear reason to meet are more mutually productive.

What Would We Talk About If You And I Could Get Together For Coffee?

Coffee Time

Lately people have been asking questions about what I do at It’s My Footprint. So I thought of putting together this one to answer some of the questions.

Why I write

I enjoy writing. I like putting across a meaningful message to an audience. To me writing is like breathing. And once in a while I publish a book.

What Inspires Me

I am inspired by people, specifically the lives of people around me. Each time we chat or you send me a message or email, I get a new amazing revelation. Sometimes at a party someone can say one statement that triggers a chain of thoughts.

My Writing Habits

From the above you can tell that I write in bits and pieces. Some articles can take a year to be completed. I try to write only when I have feel like it. On average I write 30 minutes a day. I listen mostly to Bethel music when I write or similar good music.

Once an article is ready I send it to Tichaona, the assistant editor who fine tunes it. He is an amazing guy. He is the man behind the scenes.

Where I Write

I have two main writing stations both with great outdoor views; the study or the dining room. Surprisingly I welcome frequent breaks when I write.

What Do I Write About

When I write I try to write the heart of God. I discovered that God does not speak in verses. He is simple and personal.

When I started writing years ago some people thought I write motivational stuff. Yes, what I write is a bit motivation, but it is inspired wisdom. The idea is not to motivate but to bring change. That’s why at times I write hard stuff which is difficult to swallow. End the end of the day it’s sustainable results and permanent transformation that counts.

Things I Do That Inspires Me

My wife and three kids really inspire me. Each one seems to communicate a message. I take frequent walks in the garden or take a swim with the kids. At times I run to exercise and get my blood flowing. This seems to reorient my heart such that I write without bias. Finally our church is amazing. The whole church campus and the people seem to speak a message. This is the message I capture and put it on paper.

What Am I Working On

As of today I have 141 articles already lined up. They just need to be completed. I have three books with full content but still need to be polished. One of them is ready for publishing. I have three other book topics without content, and I need to put together the meat. What I am short of is the time to work on and complete these projects.

What would we talk about if you and I could get together for coffee?

I get many requests from people wanting to chat with me, perhaps an hour or more. Some will be having tough times in relationships, careers or finances. Some would be having business ideas, or want advice on real estate. Some also just want to seek life direction and clarity. At the end of the first meeting most people usually say, ‘You are so genuine. And you even look the same as in your profile pictures!’ Yes, that’s me. I enjoy simplicity.

What would we talk about if you and I could get together for coffee? Send me an email at admin@itsmyfootprint.com and I will reply personally. Ask me any question.

Have a great day.

What Inheritance are You Leaving

Inheritance

This article is one article that can change your present life for ever. It can actually change your children and your children’s children for generations. The ability to clearly understand these concepts and apply them effectively is a matter of do or die, life or death, sink or swim. You will see that your need for cash is just a small piece of the multifaceted puzzle. There are critical things that your need to put in place first. And if done, money will flow to you will less effort.

You Inherited Many Things From Your Forefathers (Mothers)

First of all you have to understand that we inherited many things from our forefathers (mothers). Some are tangible and some are not. Some are good and some are not so good. You cannot choose what to inherit or not to inherit. It is part of your make up. It is an integral part of your purpose and calling. But you can choose which inheritance to live with.

We inherit:

Spiritual heritage – The spiritual wealth from their engagements.
Physical heritage – These are material assets
Biological heritage – DNA, health
Behavioural /cultural heritage – Habits, systems

Inheritance Flows Across Generations

These inheritance are usually passed down from one generation to another, hence they are generational. There are generational curses and generational blessings as well. There are generational talents, skills and abilities. There are also generational strengths and generational weaknesses to watch out for.

Now do not despise your surname, where you come from or your totem, because in it there is some inheritance, good or bad. Like they say, do not throw the baby out with the bath water. It is much easier to move forward using the things you inherit than the things you acquire; basing your progress on inheritance is almost effortless. Before you throw out what you inherited from your forefathers, you have to filter out the good stuff and build on that.

The fact that you received no physical material does not mean you received nothing. Actually you have more than you can ever imagine. Physical stuff is just a very small portion of your overall heritage. If you think you have nothing wait until you discover what strengths, talents, skills and abilities you have.

You Also Inherit You Forefathers Harvest

Now to end this, here is an interesting revelation. You do not just inherit what your forefathers had, you also inherit the harvest from their sowing. If you father/mother or grandfather/grandmother sowed a seed, whether good or bad, you are likely to inherit their harvest.

With no effort on your part you will find yourself receiving spiritual, physical, biological, and behavioural harvest from sowing that was done a long time ago. At times it is a good harvest that will propel you forward, making you stand out. If this happens you will hear the elders saying, ‘It is in his blood. One of his great grandfather use to do this ……’ Sometimes it is a bad harvest that will become an embarrassing burden, taking away all that you have worked hard for and discrediting your reputation and that of your loved ones.

Finally, Put More Focus On Your Positive Inheritance

Most people focus on dealing with negative generational inheritance and not on reinforcing the positive that is in plain sight. As you are aware, getting rid of the negative is more difficult than empowering your strengths. Do not allow the negative vibe of your ancestors distract you from seeing and leveraging the blessings which they bestowed on you.
