A Day At The Bookstore

Saturday, November 26, was Small Business Day in Lompoc, California, and we were invited to do a signing at a very special small business, The Bookstore. Why the (seemingly exclusive) name? Because, well, they actually are the only bookstore in Lompoc.

Lompoc is one of those large small towns spreading across the Santa Ynez River Valley delta farther than one expects, its streets named with let

“Further along in the sandy soil they found one clear impression after another. Here the tracking was swift. Zack was out in front when there was a different track. The bear print was changed.
Zack stared at it and felt the hair on the back of his neck stand up. The print he saw in the sand wasn't a bear anymore. It was the bearfoot print of a man.
"Oh, shit!" he said. THE OTHER; R Lawson Gamble”

“There is a place where the mountains tumble one upon the other off into the far distance, peak after treeless peak. Steep ridges connect them and deep canyons slash them apart. The grassy summits are wreathed with black sage. No roads intrude upon this jumble of oak-filled canyons and steep-sided hills, only the ambling trails made by deer, coyotes, and bears. The local Indians believe the spirits of the ancients still travel these roads.”
