Grief in the time of Covid: some reflections on loss

raphael-dancing

What wisdom can you reach for when the unimaginable happens?

On 6th February my apparently healthy 25-year old son Raphaël collapsed and died. Every week, all over the world, thousands of young lives like his are snatched away by sudden cardiac failure.

Who knew?

Not me.

Before that, I was like most people. I never spent much time thinking about death.

I was aware that losing a child is the worst thing any parent can experience. But although I feared it, I never thought it would happen to...

A LETTER TO MY NATIVE COUNTRY

brexit

Dear Great Britain, aka the United Kingdom, issuer of my passport, former colonial power, home of Sir David Attenborough and manufacturer of good crisps, Royal scandals, comedy shows and inventor of the word “sorry”-

So, you got Brexit done.

But are you great? Are you united?

As someone born within your shores I am supposed to have acquired a stiff upper lip but after the 2016 referendum, while my beloved 85-year-old uncle – a diehard Leaver – celebrated with a glass of Laphroaig, I cried.

Changing Tides by Sally Jensen

cinematic-environment

Liz didn’t write this cogent article on cli-fi in the movie world but she wishes she had. It’s by her niece Sally Jensen, and was first published in Film Stories Magazine. Enjoy.

Climate change depiction in mainstream cinema’s past, present and future

Opening scenes. A freak polar vortex blankets the US Midwest with snow, ice and bitter cold, bringing society to a standstill. After consecutive floods, droughts and cyclones, a city of 9 million people runs out of water. Record-shattering heat hits rich European...

Current Inspirations – Six Proposals for the Reform of Literature in the Age of Climate Change

By Nick Admussen

A century ago, China was in chaos. The Qing Empire had been overthrown by a loosely coordinated confederation of elites. The regional militias and armies that held sway were each too weak to ensure safety but too evenly matched to forge unity. Foreign powers exploited the Chinese economy at will.

Intellectuals at the time became convinced that the root of the crisis was Chinese culture itself. In 1916, a student named Hu Shi inaugurated the literature…

The Copenhagen Trilogy by Tove Ditlevsen review – confessions of a literary outsider

The Danish writer reflects on success, addiction and divorces in three volumes of compulsive autofiction: Childhood, Youth and Dependency

For the four decades after the outbreak of the second world war, Tove Ditlevsen was one of Denmark’s most famous and extravagantly tortured writers, whose many identities – dreamy working-class misfit, ruthlessly focused artist, ambivalent wife and mother, literary outsider and drug addict – were constantly...
