Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis Stories Will Be Updated Monthly
Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis will be out tomorrow, September 7.
Despite my general dislike of mobile games, this is one I’m intrigued by enough to give it a chance. As a mobile game intended to cover the entirety of the Final Fantasy VII Compilation, it seems like an interesting project.
New information has come out about Ever Crisis in a Famitsu interview, with the major details translated by Audrey on Twitter. According to the interview, the game will launch tomorrow with the Final Fantasy VII, Crisis Core, and First Soldier stories.
Each will be the start of that story arc, and the Final Fantasy VII story will have content up through the end of the Midgar section at launch. These three stories will be updated with a new chapter each month. The updates are also intended to complement Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (which is another reason to think we could get a Rebirth release date soon).
I assume once one or all of the three story arcs is concluded, another one will begin.
I had kind of hoped the entire full story would be available from the start. I guess that’s not the best model for these free-to-play mobile games, though, so I should have known better. The gacha aspect of Ever Crisis has me nervous, but I want to at least give it a try.
(The last time I tried a mobile gacha game, it was Tears of Themis, and my motivation drained away the moment I saw all the typical gacha game screens, so let’s hope that doesn’t happen here.)
Are you planning to try Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis?

TGS 2023 Hopes and Predictions
With Tokyo Game Show 2023 set for September 21-24, companies are beginning to announce their lineups and schedules.
One of the most exciting for me was seeing that Level-5’s TGS 2023 lineup includes all the major upcoming games they’ve announced, including Professor Layton and the New World of Steam.
While Professor Layton won’t be playable, it will be part of their live broadcast. Since it’s the only one of their lineup not announced for 2023, a release date seems less likely for it, but I hope we at least get a release window. I also have my fingers crossed that Fantasy Life i looks as great as its predecessor.
So, what other games might we see?
Capcom’s TGS lineup includes the Apollo Justice Trilogy, which I’m happy to see. TGS is usually a prime time for me to hope for a new Ace Attorney announcement, but that’s probably unlikely with the second trilogy already slated for next year.
Instead, I’ll hope for a surprise Breath of Fire announcement, which is sadly even less likely than Ace Attorney 7. Let me dream.
Like a Dragon: Gaiden is on Sega’s list for TGS, and with the RGG Summit set right ahead of it on September 20, I have my fingers crossed for more news on Infinite Wealth and maybe even a surprise or two.
Square Enix has a number of games in its lineup that I’m looking forward to seeing, such as the new Dragon Quest Monsters game, but even though they’re not on the list, my greatest hopes for Square Enix are that we’ll get a release date for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and a new trailer for Kingdom Hearts IV.
Listings for Rebirth have been going up at retailers, so that makes it feel more likely that they’ll announce the release date soon.
I wish the Dragon Quest III remake would make an appearance, too…
Koei Tecmo will also be at TGS 2023, with only Fate/Samurai Remnant and Atelier Resleriana listed so far, so I’ve got my fingers crossed for a surprise Fatal Frame VI announcement. Is that so much to ask? (Even a remastered collection of the original three games would be welcome.)
Many people also think Nintendo might hold a Nintendo Direct ahead of TGS, so that could lead to a number of games announced there first, too. What are you hoping or expecting to see at TGS 2023?

Spyro is Celebrating Its 25th Anniversary
We are quickly approaching the 25th anniversary of the Spyro series.
That’s right, the original Spyro the Dragon launched on September 9, 1998.
Now, I haven’t talked about the Spyro series too much here, but that’s because I played the original trilogy long before I started blogging, and the later games after the series switched developers never quite clicked with me.
I picked up the remastered collection, but haven’t played it yet due to having played the originals.
But those original three were among my favorites. I loved those games.
With the 25th anniversary fast approaching, they announced that the remastered trilogy has sold 10 million copies worldwide, a nice milestone to cross. The Spyro social media accounts also changed their profile and header pictures to reflect the 25th anniversary.
All in all, it looks like they’re serious about celebrating the 25th anniversary, so I have my fingers crossed for a new Spyro game announcement! Crash Bandicoot got a new game just a few years ago (which I still need to play), so why not Spyro?
Despite falling away from the series after the original trilogy, I’d definitely be willing to give a brand-new Spyro game a chance. Do you think they’ll announce a new game for the anniversary?

Suikoden Remasters Delayed Out of 2023
With TGS approaching in less than a month, it might have occurred to you that it’s been a long time since we heard anything about the Suikoden I & II HD Remaster announced at TGS 2022.
Indeed, despite it being announced with a 2023 release window, we’ve heard next to nothing since then.
We finally have an update now, although it’s unfortunately a delay. Konami announced that additional time is needed to work on the Suikoden remasters, so they won’t be out this year after all.
I was surprised when I read that, because a year since the announcement already felt like a long time for a remaster.
However, since they were not only remastering the graphics but also making improvements to the gameplay and translation, I can see how it might take longer than a more straightforward remaster. Hopefully this delay means the eventual release of Suikoden I & II HD Remaster will be a high-quality product.
It’s a bit ironic, though, that this follows the news from a month ago that Eiyuden Chronicle was also delayed to 2024. Suikoden and its spiritual successor just can’t be separated, it seems.
Like I said in my reaction to the Eiyuden Chronicles news, this is fine with me. I have a lot of games in my backlog to play while I wait, after all.
Speaking of which, the Suikoden announcements were a welcome surprise at TGS last year. Here’s hoping we have many new exciting announcements on the way this year!

Why is Ace Attorney 7 Taking So Long?
If you’ve seen my recent Ace Attorney posts, you know I’m very optimistic about Ace Attorney’s future.
To me, Ace Attorney 7 is a matter of when, not if.
For that matter, I even think we have a chance of seeing an Investigations Duology collection, especially given the recent attention it’s received.
But optimism still leaves us with one big question: where is Ace Attorney 7?
The seventh mainline game has been rumored since 2017, and here we are six years later still waiting for a shred of actual news. As I mentioned in my post about Ace Attorney’s future, the data breach leaks that revealed The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles and tentative plans for the Apollo Justice Trilogy also said Ace Attorney 7 was in development.
According to that roadmap, Great Ace Attorney staff would be shifted to the in-development Ace Attorney 7 after finishing work on Chronicles, with Chronicles planned for Q1 2021 release followed by a projected Ace Attorney 7 release in Q3 2021. Chronicles released later than its projected window, but Ace Attorney 7 has come nowhere close. This has led to a lot of speculation about what exactly happened to it, and I think there are three main possibilities.
Possibility #1: The delay is strategicThe Great Ace Attorney Chronicles game out at the end of July 2021 and blew past sales expectations. With Chronicles selling so well, the last thing they’d want to do is release another Ace Attorney game too soon and risk cannibalizing sales – and it might have spurred them to release a collection of games 4-6 before Ace Attorney 7 after all.
Chronicles came out in mid 2021, and then they used Ace Attorney’s success to boost marketing of the Ghost Trick remaster in mid 2023, while preparing the Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy for early 2024.
If this possibility is correct, it would mean that Ace Attorney 7 is going well or even finished, but the announcement was withheld to space out releases and bridge the gap for new fans by releasing the Apollo Justice Trilogy first. We’d probably get an announcement later in 2024 or the next year in that case.
Possibility #2: It was cancelledThe worst possibility, of course, is that Ace Attorney 7 was cancelled. Many fans seem to subscribe to this theory, believing the pandemic, Yamazaki’s departure from Capcom in 2020, or general development troubles led to Ace Attorney 7 being scrapped completely.
Obviously, since I’m an Ace Attorney optimist, I don’t believe this – or at the very least, I believe Capcom would un-cancel it after seeing the success of Chronicles. It is a possibility worth keeping in mind, though, because that would account for such a big delay. In this scenario, the Apollo Justice Trilogy could be seen as either a way to fill the gap while restarting development or an alternative release.
Let’s hope it wasn’t cancelled, though.
Possibility #3: It was rebooted or revampedWhile this might sound very close to the previous possibility, this is actually the one I think is the most optimistic: the possibility that the in-development Ace Attorney 7 was playing it safe, but the success of Chronicles convinced them to overhaul the project to make it a more ambitious game.
For example, they could have seen how the two Great Ace Attorney games telling a single story allowed for its story and world to be built up so well and decided to give Ace Attorney 7 more than the usual 5 cases. Or they could have realized Ace Attorney doesn’t need Phoenix as the lead character to be a success (the recent poll focusing on the Ace Attorney characters with their own games fits in with that) and retooled Ace Attorney 7 to have a different lead.
This possibility would mean Ace Attorney 7 is potentially still a ways off, with the Apollo Justice Trilogy filling the gap in the meantime, but it could be the best-case scenario. I’d like to see what they could do if they were willing to take some risks.
ConclusionRight now, there’s no way of knowing what the current status of Ace Attorney 7 is, but I think these are the most likely possibilities. What do you think happened to Ace Attorney 7?

Ace Attorney Investigations is Featured in the Capcom Museum
A few days ago, after learning Edgeworth won the poll about which Ace Attorney lawyer you’d most want to defend you if you were sued, I decided to visit the Capcom Museum page in Capcom Town to see if there was anything new.
To my surprise, the Special Exhibits spot notified me that a new exhibit was available… for Ace Attorney Investigations.
Yes, the two Investigations game have their own Special Exhibit in the Capcom Museum. It features art, design documents, and more from both games.
(On Monday, the design documents included a major spoiler for Investigations 2, but I don’t see it there anymore. Just tread cautiously.)
It’s pretty likely this exhibit was added in response to Edgeworth winning the poll, as enough time passed between the poll closing and the results being announced for them to prepare it.
However, I still think it’s a good sign that Investigations is getting this much attention. Unlike the other DS games, Investigations never even got a port to the 3DS. I didn’t expect Capcom to acknowledge it at all, especially not with a whole page devoted to it. They could have highlighted Edgeworth’s role in the main series, but instead they chose to bring the Investigations duology into the spotlight.
(I’d place more importance on Investigations 2 being featured on an English Capcom site if not for the memory of Bandai Namco celebrating the anniversary of the Tales series with English tweets about untranslated games.)
The biggest thing to take away from this is that Edgeworth is popular, and Capcom knows it. A couple months ago, while discussing my optimistic beliefs about Ace Attorney’s future, I said I thought the success of The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles and the announcement of the Apollo Justice Trilogy showed that Capcom no longer felt Phoenix’s name had to be in the title for an Ace Attorney game to succeed. Between that and the clear evidence of Edgeworth’s popularity, our chances of getting an Investigations duology collection now look better than ever!
Are you surprised to see Investigations featured on Capcom site? Would you play a duology bundle if it was released?

Granblue Fantasy: Relink Launches February 1, Persona 3 Reload February 2
(What is February trying to do to our wallets?)
Yesterday was the Gamescom opening night live stream, and while there weren’t a lot of announcements that stood out to me, the highlight of the show for me was Granblue Fantasy: Relink.
We’ve been waiting a long time for this game… a long, long time.
First announced in 2016, Granblue Fantasy: Relink is a full action RPG set in the universe of the Granblue Fantasy mobile game, and for a while it seemed like it might never come out. We last talked about it back in January, when it got a new trailer yet still had no release date despite a 2023 release window.
Now it’s been delayed to 2024, but with an actual release date this time! Granblue Fantasy: Relink will be out on February 1, 2024 for PS4, PS5, and PC, and preorders have opened up now. Deluxe and Collector’s Editions have also been announced.
My excitement diminished a little upon learning it will have a hub leading to stages, but it sounds like the stages still have exploration and things to discover, so I’ll be looking into that more. It does look beautiful, so I hope it will be worth the wait.
That was exciting enough, and then I woke up this morning to learn that the upcoming Persona 3 remake, Persona 3 Reload, also has a release date – February 2.
(With a $70 price for its standard edition.)
While the new trailer showcases the Xbox and PC versions, preorders have also opened up for the PS4 and PS5 versions. In addition to the standard edition, a special “Aigis Edition” was also announced.
I’m still conflicted about Persona 3 Reload, because it’s not quite definitive enough to be the clear choice for which version to play. On the other hand, it look fantastic in the new trailer…
Maybe I should play P3P first and then also play Reload? Although that’s a lot to put my backlog through.
Anyway, Granblue Fantasy: Relink comes out on February 1, followed by Persona 3 Reload on February 2, so February will be kicking off with a bang. Let’s not forget that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth are also set for early 2024, plus Metaphor: ReFantazio later in the year. 2024 is looking to be a good time for JRPG fans!

Top 10 Longest Series in My Backlog
Sometimes you buy a new game and put it in your backlog.
Sometimes you buy a bundle and put multiple games in your backlog all at once.
And sometimes you buy a game, play it, and enjoy it so much that you decide to pick up the rest of the series right then, regardless of when you intend to play them.
While talking about Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name and the possibility of catching up on the series before November, it occurred to me that even though Yakuza was one of those cases, I only have a handful of them left to play. That got me curious about what games are taking up the most space in my backlog.
So here we go, the top 10 longest series waiting in my backlog.
(This was supposed to be a top 5 list, but I have so many series with exactly 8 entries in my backlog that I had to expand it to at least the top 7, so I decided to just go for it and make it a top 10.)
10. Dragon QuestDragon Quest takes the first spot on the list, with 6 entries in my backlog. I’ve had Dragon Quest III for a long, long time (the box art calls it Dragon Warrior III; I bought it for the GBC as a kid), although I intend to pass on it in favor of playing the upcoming remake. Dragon Quest IV, VII, VIII, and XI are also in my backlog, along with the spin-off Dragon Quest Treasures.
I really ought to get around to playing these, especially Dragon Quest XI – I’ve heard so many good things about it.
9. TalesThe Tales series is a great example of what I mentioned at the start: loving a game and buying the whole series as a result. After I played Tales of Xillia, I was interested enough to finally play Tales of Symphonia, which went on to become one of my favorite games of all time. I loved it so much, I went a little crazy and started buying every Tales game I could find.
Which means that even though I’ve played a good number of them, I still have 7 in my backlog: Tales of Destiny, Tales of Legendia, Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World, Tales of Vesperia (and the Xbox 360 version was in my backlog before I replaced it with the Definitive Edition), Tales of Graces f, Tales of Xillia 2, and Tales of Hearts.
Why in the world have I been impatient for a new Tales announcement?? How about playing those 7 games first, and then I can want a new one.
8. Shin Megami TenseiLet’s add another situation to the earlier list: sometimes a developer puts all their games on sale ahead of a digital storefront shutting down. During Atlus’s last big 3DS sale ahead of the eShop closure, I picked up Shin Megami Tensei IV, Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse, Devil Survivor Overclocked, Devil Survivor 2, Soul Hackers, and Strange Journey Redux, while also picking up the recent Soul Hackers 2 for PS4 in a separate sale. That brings us to 7, or 8 if you count Tokyo Mirage Session #FE, which I picked up day one for the Wii U and still haven’t played. Oops.
For the sake of this list, I decided to count Shin Megami Tensei and Persona separately. If I combined them, they’d easily take the top spot.
This might be the most heinous entry on the list, because not only are these games in my backlog, but I don’t even know if I’ll enjoy non-Persona SMT or not. Still, those sale prices were too good to resist.
7. PokémonI didn’t expect Pokémon to make the list, since I played each generation up until the last two, which I skipped. Indeed, Pokémon Ultra Sun is the only… mainline Pokémon game in my backlog.
But I also have Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, New Pokémon Snap, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team DX, Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky, Pokémon Ranger: Shadow of Almia, and Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs.
Yep. 8 Pokémon games. Clearly I shouldn’t have been disappointed about the lack of new game announcements in the last Pokémon Presents, either.
6. PersonaHow do I have 8 Persona games in my backlog? There’s Persona 2: Innocent Sin, Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, Persona 3 Portable, Persona 5 Royal… and then the return of the spin-off curse, with Persona Q, Persona 3: Dancing in Moonlight, Persona 4: Dancing All Night, and Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight.
To make matters worse, I still haven’t decided whether I want to play Persona 3 Portable, the upcoming remake, or both.
5. Sherlock HolmesThis might be the funniest, because I never actually set out to buy all of this series like I did with the others.
At some point, I got a bundle of adventure games that included a whole bunch of Frogwares’s Sherlock Holmes games. And then, somehow I got more. I was surprised when I looked at my Steam library and realized I had nearly accumulated the entire series without ever actively setting out to do so.
The Case of the Silver Earring, The Awakened, the newer reimagining of The Awakened, Sherlock Holmes: Nemesis, Sherlock Holmes versus Jack the Ripper, The Testament of Sherlock Holmes, The Devil’s Daughter, and Chapter One are all in my backlog. (I also have the first game in the series, but tried it and didn’t enjoy it. I have, however, played and enjoyed two of the more casual spin-off entries.)
8 Sherlock Holmes games, randomly skipping over one in the middle of the series, and I still haven’t finished any of them. Maybe the next mystery month should just be a Sherlock Holmes month.
4. Metal GearAll right, this one can be explained. I recently picked up Metal Gear Solid: The Legacy Collection on PS3. This is an amazing bundle that includes 8 games: Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2, Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions, Metal Gear Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 3, Metal Gear Solid 4, and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker.
Technically, I also have access to Metal Gear Solid V, if I resubscribe to PlayStation Plus. So in short, if I ever actually get into the Metal Gear series, I have pretty much everything I need.
3. Final FantasyI didn’t expect Final Fantasy to earn a spot on the list at all, much less one this high up. After all, I only have Final Fantasy XII and what else? Oh. Final Fantasy IV Interlude, Final Fantasy IV: The After Years, Final Fantasy XIII-2, Lightning Returns, Final Fantasy Tactics, Stormblood, Shadowbringers, and Crisis Core. Thanks to sequels, expansions, and spin-offs, I somehow have 9 Final Fantasy games in my backlog.
At least I’m currently playing Stormblood, so that’s something.
2. TrailsI debated for a while about where exactly to put Trails on this list. Technically, I only have 7 Trails games in my backlog. Trails in the Sky SC, Trails from Zero, Trails to Azure, Trails of Cold Steel, Trails of Cold Steel III, Trails of Cold Steel IV, and Trails into Reverie.
However, it’s functionally 9 games. Skipping entries isn’t a good idea, so I won’t be able to play through those 7 without also playing the 2 missing from my backlog. And each one of these games is going to take a long, long time to finish. I really need to attack the Trails series with the same devotion I showed the Yakuza series.
And at last, that brings us to the final entry on this list, from the developer that never sleeps…
1. Atelier12.
Twelve.
TWELVE!
All right, there’s a reason for this! While the newer Atelier games go on sale regularly enough, the older ones do so rarely enough that if you see a sale, it might be years before the next one. So when the Atelier trilogy packs went on sale a while ago, I… picked up the Arland Trilogy and the Dusk Trilogy…
…and Atelier Sophie because I wanted to play it ahead of Atelier Sophie 2, which I preordered… and of course I got Atelier Ryza 2 because I expected to play it right away… and I picked up Mana Khemia when I thought the Vita store was shutting down… and I was lucky enough to find a good Ebay price on Atelier Iris… and I ordered the Atelier Marie remake because it just looked so cute…
In short, I should take the next mainline game being a gacha game as the reprieve it is – a rare opportunity to catch up on my backlog and play some of these games that I’ve apparently been hoarding.
What a terrifying glimpse into my backlog. I think I liked it better when I just looked back at the oldest ones. Still, if the Yakuza series can escape the backlog, there’s hope for all these series as well! Which series do you have the most unplayed entries of?

Like a Dragon Gaiden Includes Infinite Wealth Demo, RGG Summit Date Announced
The new trailer for Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name came out this morning as expected.
I only watched bits and pieces of the trailer since I don’t want too much of it spoiled for me, but what I saw got me pretty excited.
(And terrified – this looks like it could have some intensely emotional moments. Please, let Kiryu rest. Let him go home and be happy.)
Aside from the story, the trailer also shows fun things like outfit customization for Kiryu, a coliseum that lets you build a team for large-scale fights with apparently different playable characters, and the live-action cabaret club, which I’m sure won’t be awkward at all.
What might be even more exciting is the announcement that Gaiden includes a demo for Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth. The demo, or playable teaser, will be unlocked once you beat the game and has unique scenes that won’t be in the full game. That’s even more reason to be excited for Gaiden!
Finally, while it hasn’t been shared by the English account yet, the previously-announced Fall 2023 RGG Summit has now been confirmed for September 20. They’ll probably talk about Gaiden and show more of Infinite Wealth, but I can’t help but hope for some surprise announcements!
Even though I didn’t watch the whole trailer, I’m more excited than ever for Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name – and even more determined to catch up on the series so I’ll be ready to play it when it comes out on November 9!
If you’re like me and have been waiting for physical Gaiden import news, Play-Asia has listed that include English. VGP confirmed they will have it as well. Now… to decide if I should get the PS4 version or if I’ll have a PS5 by then…
Anyway, what are your thoughts on the latest Like a Dragon Gaiden news?

New Like a Dragon Gaiden Trailer Coming August 18
A new trailer for Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name is set to be shown on August 18 at 4 AM PT / 7 AM ET.
The trailer will be in Japanese, but it’s likely they’ll release an English version afterwards.
It will be part of the Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio TV #22, the latest in their series of regular broadcasts. According to translations of the video description, it will also have information about upcoming events.
To me, that sounds like there’s a good chance we’ll get a date for the September RGG Summit, since September is coming up soon. June’s RGG Summit wasn’t as exciting as I’d hoped, due to the trailers having been shown at previous events already. Here’s hoping the upcoming RGG Summit has some surprises in store!
Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name will be out on November 9. It’s digital-only in the west, though I’m still keeping my eyes open for physical imports with English on the disc.
This feels like the point where I should say I’m nowhere near ready to play Gaiden, but I’ve actually made decent progress on my Yakuza backlog. Only Yakuza 6 and Yakuza: Like a Dragon are left from the main series, and I started Yakuza 6 last night. Maybe I will catch up in time for Gaiden after all!
Are you going to watch the upcoming Like a Dragon Gaiden trailer? Do you expect any surprises from the live stream, or do you think any announcements will be saved for the RGG Summit?
