Self Publishing: Common Book Writing FAQs
Book writing is the first stage in the book publishing process and a very important one for that matter because before a book can be published or promoted, it must firstly be written.
In this post, we are examining some common book writing Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs).This post is by no means an exhaustive one and additions and comments are welcomed to really make this a comprehensive collection of Book writing FAQs.
Question 1: When can I start writing a book?
Answer: The best time to start writing a book is now! Now is the time to start writing about that book that you have always wanted to write. There is no hard rule as to when you can start writing a book, the idea is you just have to start writing now.
Whenever you feel like writing about anything, that is just the best time to start all the writing, the time to pick that pen and notepad or open that PC or Mac and start writing. Keep writing, you are creative, show it to the world!
Question 2: What can I write about?
Answer:Anything, Everything and something! Those are the three things you can start writing about.
Firstly, anything that you love to write about, you can always write about it. Be it your hobby, your passion or what you love to do and what you love to talk about.
Secondly, everything you have the expertise, the time and passion to write about, you can write about them.
Thirdly, something…That something you have been dreaming about, that story you have always like to see people read about, that one experience you will always cherish or remember. That something always calling for attention to get written inside of you, those are the things you can write about.
What to write about is all about what you can write, what you know that you can write about and what you love and have the time to write about.
Question 3: Where can I write?
Answer :As long as you can have right atmosphere to write, you can write anywhere, everywhere and somewhere. as long as you can easily connect with your creative ability without any hindrance or disturbance.
Question 4: What is the best thing to write about?
Answer : The best thing to write about is what you can be happy writing about. No hard rule to this. There are different people with different reading taste, so far you can be proud of what you write as a writer, there would surely be someone out there who would also be happy to read what you write. The best you can do is to keep writing all the best you can write for that “someone”,
Question 5: For a blog post, where can I get the ideas of what to write about?
Answer :There are many ways to find ideas on what you write about in a blog post. These include but not limited to:
Browsing on similar blogs in the same niche as yours to have a feel of what other bloggers in your niche are writing about.
Your own experience and expertise in your field of interest is another idea of what you can write a blog post on. If I can ski dive and I can be called an expert in that, I can easily write lots of blog post on ski diving just as if I can sing, there is nothing stopping me from writing not only on how to sing but also on how I compose my songs, perform my songs and market my songs. That is just about getting the ideas of what to write about in a blog post using your experience and expertise in your niche of interest.
Happening and events around you or your specific niche can be lovely source of ideas of what to write about in your blog posts.
Hanging around Social Media networks like Twitter and Facebook can also provide lots of probable ideas of what to write a blog post about. On places like Twitter and Facebook, various people hang around to talk about what is popular and trending on a particular topic or area, hanging around places like these helps in knowing what people in your niche are talking about and interested in at the moment and those trending and popular topics are wonderful source of ideas of what to write about in a blog post.
Question 6: Why do Authors write books? What are the reasons for all authors writing a book?
Answer :Many might answer
that Authors write books just to make money. Maybe yes but that is not the main reason why authors probably most authors write a book. Money can be a reason but the main reasons common to all authors for writing books are two and they are:
To Educate: This is the main reason why most nonfiction authors write books. Writing a book for the money is fine but for all non-fiction authors, writing a book help educate some particular set of people on a particular genre or subject. For reading a non-fiction book, readers are finding one or two thing to learn from a book. To educate or teach someone on one particular topic or subject in fact is the main motivating factor that helps spurs an author to write in the first place.
To Entertain: For almost Fiction Authors, entertainment of book reader is the reason for book to be written. Fiction books are written to fill a need and the need is entertainment. To engage reader’s attention and time, to taka readers mind off their present environment and happenings around, to have fun, these and many more are the reasons for writing a fiction book.
Question 7: what are the benefits of writing books?
Answer : There are many benefits for writing a book. These include:
Writing books that sells well is a good source of income and a way to make some extra money. If you write a book that people love to buy, making money off such book is one of the main pay off for writing such books. There are many examples of authors who make good money from writing books for people to read.
The prestige and maybe the fame (if a book is a best seller) that writing a book confers to authors is of great beneficial note. In fact, many write a book only to be known as an author! This is made possible by the fact that not everyone can be a writer or author, so if someone can, then it’s of uttermost important to be proud of been among few out of many who can write a book and be called an author.
To many who want their memories to be remembered after they have gone and many who want something that will outlive them after their death, writing a book is a good way of achieving that if only they can. Writing a book has the benefit of having something to outlive authors, something that can always be use to remember the life and time of such people. Many authors have been dead for years but their books still exist and even popular till date. Book like Think And Grow Rich still sells till today and readers will always remember one Napoleon Hill who died many years ago all because he wrote like Think And Grow Rich that outlive him.
Writing a book also have the benefit and advantage of making authors so popular and also to be seen and addressed as an expert on a particular niche, subject or topic. When it come to personal finance, the name Robert Kiyosaki will always ring a bell, this is an advantage for Robert for writing best selling personal finance books like Rich Dad, Poor Dad and many more books like that. Such is the benefit of been an author.
Every Author can be said to be creative in one way or the other. It takes creativity to write what other people will be interested in and also love to read. Writing books helps authors to horn their creative prowess. This to me means writing helps in personal and self development. The more an authors writes, the more creative they becomes as it is a natural rule that practice makes perfect. If you like to be more creative, just write book!
Question 7: Every trade have a tool, what are the tools for writing?
Answer : Writing can be the most simplest thing to do. This is because; it requires no elaborate or expensive tool. It can be done with no money at hand and with the simplest of all known tools and there are many tools you might never have think of using as authors, you might be in for a surprise.
Tools for writing include:
- Pen: For writing on paper
- Paper Notepad or Notebook: For writing of books
- Alarm Clock to help wake up in the night to write
- PC or Mac
- iPad, iPhone, Blackberry, Android Phone,Electronic organizers for those who love to write on the move (I love writing on my Blackberry a lot, it’s both mobile and compact and its my mobile office assistant)
- Internet ( Every Author should be able to use this lovely but expansive tool)
- Table or Bedside Lamp
- Tea or Coffee (to refresh and stay alert during a long writing session)
- The heart and passion for writing (the very first tool every author and writer must have, without this, every other tools are just only tools)
Question 8: I am through with writing my book manuscript, what next?
Answer : Good job well done. Next is to get the book published but before then, now is the time to edit your book manuscript or draft. Editing and proofreading is the best thing for authors to do here before getting a book published. Editing a book helps to get rid of mistake and errors that can make a reader to have the best reading experience.
Question 9: How do I go about editing my book manuscript?
Answer : This depend on how the book is to be published. For book to be published through the old traditional way of publishing, then there is no need to worry about the process of editing. This is because that is the business of your book publisher. But if you are Self Publishing your book, then the job of editing rest on your shoulder .Here you either find a friend, family or associate to help edit and proofread your manuscript or you hire a book editing and proofreading expert or service. The internet is a good way to find such experts.

Author Platform: The Indie Author’s Holy Grail Or A Complete Waste Of Time? – 3
This is the third and concluding part of the post “Author Platform : The Indie Author’s Holy Grail Or A Complete Waste Of Time?”. The first and the second part of the post can be found here and here respectively
Is taking the pain to build an Author Platform a wise use of time, energy and effort?
Can book really be sold by building an Author Platform?
What about Social Media Networks, can you really sell, promote and market Self Published Books by been all around Twitter, Facebook and other networks like that?
What really sell books and how can you be another John Locke on Amazon Kindle – Building An Author Platform or what?
So many questions raised here and many questions that needs answers.
But, I remember that there are experts that had both the experience and knowledge that qualifies them to answer all these questions in its practical and knowledgeable sense.
Let see what Jonna Penn of The Creative Penn, a Indie Fiction Author, a book marketing, writing, publishing and blogging expert and Rachel Abbott, also an Indie Fiction Author, a book marketing expert and a blogger have to say about this.
A SOS Message to Joanna got me the reply below:
Hi Mayor,
Thanks for the email and there are 2 answers – for non-fiction authors, who essentially want to have small businesses, speaking careers and more, I think blogging is important because you need to build authority through multiple channels.
For fiction authors, there’s really no need to blog or have a platform, just write a lot of books. It just takes most people a while to write a lot of books so some people like to market as well. It depends on how patient you are.
I am both of these – I started out with non-fiction and continue to write it, I also make an income from my courses and professional speaking – I am an entrepreneur and have a business. So I do both and you can see the difference between TheCreativePenn.com (business, speaking, non-fiction) and JoannaPenn.com (fiction)
Here is my article on selling more books – you’ll see that openly at #8 do I mention anything about platform
You’re welcome to link back to the article in your own post.
Thanks, Joanna
From Joanna’s point of view, the following is my deduction:
1. Building an Author Platform might be the best thing to do for Non Fiction Indie Authors who would like to be seen as an authority on a particular niche or topic. Building an Author Platform helps in spreading the message and knowledge of Non Fiction Author in a particular genre to the right and necessary Audience that really need such. But with Fiction Author who only writes to entertain or to engage reader’s time, there might be nothing much to say to those Fiction audiences which might warrant having an Author Platform. The best bet for Authors like these is to write as much books as they can to really achieve their aim of writing those books.
2. Been on both side of the fence can be profitable too if there is the will, time, energy and expertise to do so. Joanna herself is a Fiction Author but she stills have an Author Platform where she shares his book marketing, writing, publishing and book publishing knowledge to fellow Authors. She also write Non Fiction “How To” Guides for Self Published Authors as part of her Author Platform’s job. She can do this all because she can both write Fiction books and also have an expertise and knowledge she can share with her audience who are mainly Self Publishing Authors.
Now, let see what Rachel have to say about this same issue
Hi
An interesting question! I think that his points are very valid. Getting categories right is very important indeed – something which I have stressed. With Amazon it is all about visibility, and if people can’t actually see your book, they won’t buy it.
However, although I do agree with the principle that maximizing visibility on Amazon is the key, I recently ran a very short promotion on my book. It is now over a year since it was launched, and ten months since it hit the number one spot in the Amazon charts, so as you might expect, it is dropping down the charts. But around the time of the ‘birthday’ of the launch, I ran a promotional campaign – just for one week – when I did a little more blogging, talked on Facebook and a couple of forums, plus did a few tweets. And there was a considerable difference in the sale figures. Not enough to get back up to the top ten, of course, but certainly enough to demonstrate that marketing on social media really does make a difference.
I didn’t keep it up, unfortunately, because I was in the middle of editing my second book – which had to be my priority. But I think it proves that you really can make a difference with social media, even if managing the Amazon visibility is a priority.
I hope that helps.
Kind regards
Rachel
From what Rachel says, it can be said that Building an Author Platform can really help Indie Authors in their book marketing campaign even if going the “Amazon Internal Book Marketing Optimization” way is a priority. Why can’t the two run together – that is what I can say about Rachel’s answer.
The Experts has spoken and its all clear that both Joanna and Rachel never frowns at or discourage building of Author Platform by Indie Authors. It just a matter of what the priority is and what goal or aim needs to be achieved.
But Personally as an Indie Author too, my take on this is that every indie authors should try to be the “Jack of All Trade, Master Of All” when it comes to this two opposing but complimentary ways of book marketing.
Why can’t each Indie Authors build an Author Platform if there is the will, power, energy, time and expertise to do so and if there is the need for having one while also maximizing their book marketing effort by going the Amazon Internal Book Marketing Optimization way (I mean having the best categories for books, having a Cathy book description and a lovely enticing book title, book cover with optimizing books and eBooks for the “Look Inside Book” and “Read A Sample” feature on Amazon book stores)
I will and always love the idea of having An Author Platform if only for the sole aim of helping fellow Indies been a better, Smart and Savvy Indie – the main aim of having this blog in the first place.
But what do you think of this? Is Building an Author Platform a waste of time when thinking of ways to market and promote Self Published books? Does it worth it all?

Author Platform : The Indie Author’s Holy Grail Or A Complete Waste Of Time? – 2
This is the second part of the post “Author Platform : The Indie Author’s Holy Grail Or A Complete Waste Of Time?”. The first part of the post can be found here
On a random search on google,I found something interesting and unconventional, that leads Me to taking a trip to visit the Kindle Store and I found a book “Make A Killing on Kindle without Blogging, Facebook or Twitter – The Guerilla Marketers Guide To Selling eBook On Amazon” by Michael Alvear.
Note: I am not an affiliate of Michael nor trying to give his book an unsolicited publicity but this post is just to talk about the issue he raised in his book.I gave № link to the book,if you will like to read it,you can check on the Kindle Store for it.
A glimpse inside the book is like been hit by a Tsunami! Why?
Because it goes the way to rubbish the popular say in the Self Publishing world of Building An Author Platform. Although his stance of seeing an Author Platform as a mere waste of time for Indie Authors came on the background of using an Author Platform to market, sell and promote self published books but the whole hit on the Self Publishing giant called Author Platform is of uttermost interest.
The book Approaches book(most especially Kindle eBooks) marketing a little differently than the other self publishing marketing book. Unlike everyone else,it does NOT tell Indie Authors not to spend time, energy and effort on social networks to build an Author Platform or to promote Self Published books.
Instead, of “wasting” time building an Author Platform to Sell Books, the book focuses on 3 things:
(1) Attracting loads of people to your book’s page at Amazon.com right inside Amazon’s book store rather than from a blog or social media network
(2) Getting your visitors’ attention once they’ve landed on your book’s page at Amazon.com
and
(3) Converting your visitors to buyers of your eBook.
Self Publishing can be a crazy world and with different things been said by different people. One more things is that when it comes to Self Publishing, there can’t be a single answer to a question and also there isn’t a single way to reach the zenith of book marketing and promotion. Different Indie Authors, all with different marketing strategies and belief but in all,Building an Author Platform has somehow been a unified belief among almost all Self Publishing experts.
But why would one man now come and say Building an Author Platform is a mere and wonderful waste of the Indie Author’s time, energy and effort? Trust Me,only Michael can answer that question.
I think He had some valid points when I go through the book in that he talked about seeing eBook marketing especially on Kindle Store as an internal promotion and not the external way of book marketing like creating an Author Platform and driving traffic to book sales page through Social Media Networks,a common thing to see many Indie Authors doing.
Optimizing book page for efficient visibility using the right categories, having a catchy and inviting book description and having a nice pieces of writing in the first part of a book to make good use of the Look Inside and Read a Sample feature of Kindle ebooks and many more like that has been his model of proper book marketing. Some useful tips and book marketing strategies indeed.
We can also consider the fact that similar to what the book preaches, Aggie Villanueva in her book,Amazon -Create Best Seller also talked about how a book can become a best seller by having the book in the right categories on Amazon Kindle Store. Such book marketing strategy is to me a worthwhile one.
But can that still stop Indie Authors from Building an Author Platform when Michael mention it that building traffic to a book page on the Kindle Store through a blog and Social Media networks such as Twitter,Facebook and so on is a waste of time giving the reason as been that of low click through and sales conversion rate of traffics from these sources?
No,maybe a Yes!
Valid points been raised by his book but should Indie Author Stop Building an Author Platform?
Maybe we need to ask the view of Self Publishing and Book Marketing Experts like Joanna Penn and Rachel Abbott on this issue. They all have something to say when I contact them both on this issue.
Next in the concluding part of this post is What the experts have to say about this issue. Did they agree with Michael or disagree. What is my take on this too (I am not an expert like Joanna and Rachel but I am in the game too and I surely have my view) – freedom of expression you will say? Lol
But what do you think of this? Is Building an Author Platform a waste of time when thinking of ways to market and promote Self Published books? Does it worth it all?
Kindly let me know what is your opinion on this by leaving a comment in the comment box below and don’t forget to share this post with others via Twitter,Facebook etc if you find it useful and interesting. Remember, there is love in sharing, help share the knowledge and the love.

Author Platform : The Indie Author’s Holy Grail Or A Complete Waste Of Time?
Author Platform!
Almost all Self Publishing Experts are busy telling you to build an author platform. Every Indie Authors are either busy working on building one or praying they build one soon.
Unless someone reading this is just getting to hear about the word Self Publishing for the first time,Author Platform is a common word to every Self Publishing Author.
Every Indie Author will agree to the fact that writing a book and getting it published isn’t enough for selling a book, in fact, the job only started after writing and publishing. Just as a major way to sell, market and promote self published books, building an Author Platform now becoming almost all Indie Author’s obsession and which Indie Author won’t love to have such a huge Platform like that of the Michael Hyatt, Dyna Lynn Smith, Joanna Penn and many more like that of the Self Publishing world.
It’s an indisputable fact that building and having a huge author platform is of great advantage and a worthwhile leverage with many benefits attached such as becoming an expert and authority in a particular niche, having a wide reach and a huge audience base to call your own,the visibility and publicity it brings among many other benefits.
But with all these advantage and benefit building an author platform has to offer Self Publishing Authors,is building one an easy thing to do?
The sincere and the naked truth is that Building an Author Platform isn’t a bread and butter affairs. It surely comes with a price to pay,it’s never an easy and straight forward thing to achieve (Ask all those popular Self Publishing experts who have built a huge and formidable Author Platform, they will all tell you all they have put on the line to get to where they are today).
What then is the price for building an Author Platform?
Call it Time,Effort and Hard work and you will be 100% right.
Such is the price to pay for Building and Having a well targeted, formidable and huge Author Platform.
But is do all the time, effort and hard work that is required to have a huge author platform like that of Michael Hyatt worth it at all.
Maybe another question is to ask if Building and Having an Author Platform like the experts advised really translate to making millions selling and marketing a book.
The best question here to ask is Is Building An Author Platform A Pure Waste Of Time Or The Best Use Of Time For Indie Authors?
But why ask such a question?
Let’s take a trip to The Kindle Store and check what Michael Alvear have to say about Building An Author Platform in his book and also what Self Publishing Experts like Joanna Penn and Rachel Abbott have to also say about issues raised by Michael, his book and the huge slap he gave to this popular giant called Author Platform.
All this and many more in the concluding part of this posts.
Will you ever attribute building an Author Platform to a waste of time, energy and effort or a worthwhile investment of time, energy and effort? What is your view on this issue, kindly leave your comment here.

My Book Publishing Stories
My Book Publishing Stories
Formatting
Without knowing anything about trim size of books, I decided upon using the 8” x 11” size after seeing it somewhere that it’s the most common used trim size. When I took a ruler to measure the said length and breadth, I discover that it was too long and wide for a book of not more than 60 pages. Since I have already downloaded the Word Doc formatted interior templates for the 8” x 11” trim size from both Createspace and Lulu’s website, I later have to download the 6” x 9” trim size that I find suitable for my books.
Without reading the formatting guidelines on both Createspace and Lulu,I thought the same formatting for paperback will also work for the eBook version but I later found out after reading the formatting guidelines that with the Paperback print book, there can be page number, footer, header and so on when using Microsoft Word but those formatting are never needed for the eBook version on both the Kindle and ePub format of Amazon and Lulu respectively. With this,I just have to remove all those stuffs from the already typed draft of my books and I created a separate draft for both the print and the eBook version of my books.
Cover
I have always believed in Do It Yourself (DIY) and trying things out myself to know what works and what will never works.
I decided to design my book’s covers myself since I naturally find computer graphics and imaging an easy thing to do. i found some images that goes with what I was talking about in my books (that is success, failure and motivations to press on after failing) from the internet and I decided to play around designing my covers using Microsoft Word and a Screen Capture Software -Screenhunter 6.0 Free Version to capture the final image as a jpg file.
As a footnote, I am presently writing a small guide that shows how Indie Authors who are on a tight budget to avoid the fees to hire a professional cover designer can design a nice looking cover using just only Microsoft Word and ScreenHunter 6.0.That was how I design all my covers and am so proud of them all, especially my final book covers now.
For the Kindle and Lulu cover, I just used the jpg image I designed and with Createspace used the Cover Template for my trim size as a guide to get the width and length of my cover files that include the front and back cover images with the spine fold. With this guideline from the Cover Template I downloaded from Createspace again use Microsoft Word to design my cover file that include the front and back cover with the spine fold and later convert the doc file to PDF(the only cover format accepted by Createspace) using a Free Word To PDF Converter.
With the Lulu covers, I later find out (after uploading my draft and covers and having my cover images rejected by Lulu) that Lulu cover images should only be 612 x 792 Pixel in size.I have to resize my cover images to that size before it was accepted by Lulu
I Finally Got My Books on Lulu.com
Nov 10: I got my 3 Books published on Lulu early in the morning (I have been working all day and night the previous day to get all I needed ready for publishing).
After having both my Books in Print and Ebook version on Lulu.com (And surprisingly, I did all the uploading and publishing on my Blackberry Phone! I love that “toy” of mine a lot),I hurriedly updated my Author Spotlight Bio and I tweets the link on Twitter.
I have also hurriedly written book blurbs (I later have to re-write these) which I use to create review posts on temporary wordpress.com blog updated my Facebook Timeline with this (I later have to ditch Facebook for the main time as I am enjoying my flirtatious relationship with Twitter) and later in the day, I got a call from 2 friend telling me they liked my books (Whoa! So someone out there is watching and liking what I was doing!)
I did no marketing or promotion for my books on Lulu as I am just testing the water with Lulu, My main focus and target is the Amazon Kindle and Createspace which I haven’t upload my books to.
Cover And Metadata Mistakes
Nov 12: I got an email on my BB from Lulu that my name as it appears on one of my book cover doesn’t match the metadata I supplied when uploading the book – A good blunder indeed. The email talked about other errors mainly about the book cover and the metadata with other sundry stuffs I never would have been careful to notice when publishing the books.
I later have to correct all these mistakes and re-upload the book.
Later to come on My Indie Publishing Stories Is how I got my books published on Amazon Createspace and Kindle after re-editing my books. Kindly check here again for how it goes with my Amazon Publishing Journey and Experience.
Thanks for reading My Book Writing Stories and I hope you learn one or two things from it.
