This was a great read and informative, both in Russian history and in Jewish culture in that area in the 1900's. I loved Molly's transition from a planner to a discoverer of her family and herself.
Molly realizes the struggles her family had to endure to leave their mother country and start new. She discovers the other family members she didn't know about and learns how to become Malka, which is Hebrew for queen.
Thorough out the book you learn Jewish terms, Russian and what it was like for Russian Jews living in the 1900's and how their lives changed in a blink of an eye. If you like historical fiction with a touch of fantasy thrown in, then you'll love this book.

I so enjoyed reading 'Becoming Malka ' A great book on so many different levels. It is very obvious that Mirta did a lot of research on her book. The novel is a mixture of fantasy, humor, history, Judaism and Kabbalah.
It was easy to identify with all the characters and the the different situations. The author has the ability to describe many scenes in detail. I especially enjoyed how she wrote about the different gowns the girls were wearing. It was very easy to form a picture in my mind.
I loved the little pearls of wisdom from Bobe Malka.
Looking forwards to reading her next novel!!!

I absolutely LOVED this very warm and inspiring memoir! It is a very well written account of an Argentina family - who happen to be descendants of immigrant Jews - who immigrate to the USA. The author describes how difficult it was for her parents to make the decision and to actually accomplish the move to a different country with a very different culture and language. While being entertained by the author's story (there is a lot of humor in this book), I also learned a great deal about Argentina history and the diaspora of the Eastern European Jews. I got a lot more out of this book than I was expecting. I highly recommend this book.
