The Novel: What Happens After (and why writing sucks)

So, I wrote this thing called a book. It took two and a half years of my life to complete the current draft, not to mention countless of hours put in over the years to build the world, magic system, flesh out the characters, and give it a working (semi) interesting setting. It’s around 140,000 […]

The Golem and the Jinni: A Review

Helene Wecker's The Golem and the Jinni is a novel that explores the human experience through alien minds. It is a deeply character driven story, so much so that the threads of the plot almost seem lost in the cacophony of flashbacks and memories. That being said, the themes explored are deeply human and real. The novel is gritty at points and the author's talent with prose and character depth truly shines through the protagonist(s). With most things in life, however, there is bad mixed in with the good: often it seems to wander into unimportance; at times it seems to lack direction. In the end, however, the author pulls it together into a satisfying ending for the characters, albeit, a little too perfect for my tastes. If you enjoy deeply personal characters, mythology, and real world fantasy, this novel is for you.

30 Days of Night: A Review

Maybe I just don’t like graphic novels. When I thinking about writing this post, I almost took a moment and went “full literary.” For those of you who don’t write genre fiction, “full literary” is our term (ok at least itsmyterm) for someone who views the body of work known as ‘literature’ as somehow higher […]

Preston and Child’s “Relic:” Fantastic Horror

Relicby Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child is a monster horror written in 1995, and it reads like a fantasy novel. Starting off with the characteristic “slow build” of epic fantasy,Relicbegins with an exciting prologue, several deaths, and then a cut to normal life in New York. It is almost reminiscent of George R. R. Martin’sGame […]

The Blob: A Pack of “Lols”

When I found out that we had to watch the Blob for this class, I thought “great, another bad 80s horror film.” But honestly, I really enjoyed it. Sure, it wasn’t scary–like at all, but I enjoyed it immensely. If you’re looking for a film to laugh at with someone you care about, this is […]

Godzilla: The King Returns

Godzilla was a much better movie than I expected. For this post, I will diverge from my normal post-structure and assess the film by category. Acting Of all the technical aspects of this movie, the acting was probably the worst. For one, I’m still unsure of who exactly everyone’s names are. I have to say, […]
