Legend of the Coco Palms Resort
“I need you to stop working on whatever it is you’re doing. Take a look at this,” said Stan as he tossed a file in front of Abby.
Abby opened the file as quickly as she could, knowing that the shark standing over her was about to bite. Stan had no scruples when it came to getting lucrative accounts. Everyone who worked in his law firm knew he was out for blood. That’s where he inherited his nickname, “the Shark,” which was unbeknownst to Stan, of course.
“Holy shit, Stan, you’ve got to be kidding me. This property is a money pit. Nothing has come of it since Hurricane Iniki hit in 1992. I get its popularity back in the day, but I’ve heard enough to know that this is a sunken treasure. And may I add, with no hope of anyone hauling it from the bottom.”
“You’re not looking at the big picture, doll. Look at the offer being made.”
“I’m not feeling it, Stan. We have so many great cases on our plate right now. Why this?”
“Let me spell it out for you, kid. This is prime property. The King of Rock and Roll, Elvis himself, put this place on the map. No one went to the Coco Palms unless they were royalty or filthy rich,” said Stan as dollar signs floated around in his mind. “Listen to me. This place was charging four hundred dollars a night back in the seventies; by today’s standards, the prices would be astronomical.”
“I get all that, Stan, but what makes you think that after twenty-one years of others battling the Hawai`ian Heritage and Cultural Association that they’d be willing to allow Kelly Corporation to acquire the land? You and I both know that there hasn’t been a real estate company out there that hasn’t tried to erect condos, not to mention the numerous private investors. If my understanding of this case is correct, the Hawai`ians want the Coco Palms Resort back to its original state and nothing else. So why would you think that Kelly Corporation has a chance of putting up condos? It doesn’t make sense to me.”
“Because a little birdie tweeted in my ear last night that they don’t want to acquire the land, they want to get in bed with the Hawai`ian Heritage…whatever the hell it’s called.”
“Okay, that’s even crazier. There’s no way that will happen. You of all people should know that,” said Abby as another thought raced around in her mind. “Unless they’re not aware of just how many condos the Kelly people are projecting to erect.” Abby shook her head and proceeded to answer her own question. “No, no way would they go into a deal with them. No way in hell. Unless there’s something that you’re not sharing with me, Stan?”
“This is big dough, kid. You could practically retire if you pull this one off. Just think of what your life would be like.”
“You’re avoiding the question. But I think I got my answer. Obviously, you know something I don’t.”
“Stop being so paranoid. You’re a lawyer for Christ’s sake, not a detective.”
“Sometimes they’re one and the same, Stan. That’s something you taught me when I started here.”
Abby knew she had hit a nerve based on his reaction. Stan was withholding his real motive in pursuing the deal, but Abby always loved a challenge.
“Just one more thing. Why me and not one of your other budding protégés?”
“Because I know you’ve got what it takes. I’ve seen how ferocious you can be in a courtroom.”
“I don’t know, Stan,” said Abby sighing as she held the file in her hand.
“I’ll tell you what. Think about it for a few days. If you don’t want it, I’ll gather some other young blood who’s hungry enough to take it on.”
“No! Don’t mention this to anyone—not just yet. I’ll have an answer for you by end of day tomorrow. Fair enough?”
“That’s my girl.”
