This may be the best book I have ever read - it is certainly one of the best - and yet strangely enough the author did not really write it, but what he did was interview a great many people and present the transcripts of his choosing. It is better than any novel, because it is real... I am hugely impressed.
I have also just finished his previous book Londoners, which is in a similar vein. Both wonderful works. After many years of barely reading books, but reading millions of words in other formats, I began on books again a few weeks ago with some autobiographies - sixteen in three months now. I don't see me going back to fiction though - it's all just made up. Real life says so much more. Some other books I have recently completed in this revitalised bookfest, and which I can strongly recommend are:
Sue Black's was deeply moving and very personal to me, since she is the forensic pathologist at the university I have donated my mortal remains to; Lily Ebert's is traumatic, but gripping; Barack Obama's unveils a vast and fascinating insight; while Chris Atkins' is compelling, entertaining and deeply revealing all at the same time. Whatever next? I am also writing another one myself, but ever so slowly, like shepherding a snail up a mountain. It may shrivel and die before it reaches the top.
