Exit Through the Gift Shop

From all the reports, the gift shop at the new ten-years-in-the-making 9/11 memorial in NYC is tasteless and insane--and they've already had a cocktail party for the super-rich at the site where so many (including one of my friends) are still buried--so a bit of somber reality, a couple of my photos from the year after.

Did Robbins Ever Get the Blues?
My new piece at The Nation: Tom Robbins has new memoir so I recall when I "exposed" him in first major interview.

Tyson-Holyfield Revisited
Two L.A. Dodgers minor leaguers at AAA Albuquerque got into a fight in dugout last night and one of them reportedly bit off part of ear of the other. The two are fairly high profile--Olivo a longtime major league catcher and Guerrero a top prospect. Details to come. Report here that Guerrero getting plastic surgery now. UPDATE: Serious enough that Guerrero--a Cuban who signed $28 million contract--will likely miss five weeks. Video below includes still that shows dugout fracas.

Going 'Mad'
Mad Men certainly has had its up and down this (short) season but this week's episode--with much of its focus on Peggy and Joan--was surely the best. Tip: the next episode if title "Waterloo"--and it's far too early in the chronology for it to be a reference to Abba. Maybe Lou simply eats a Napoleon at a key point in the episode but I doubt it. My prediction: Peggy goes with Don's idea for the Burger Chef ad, shocks Lou, they blow the presentation and now both Peggy and Don get forced out of the firm. They start new firm with fellow "family" member Pete, and Roger joins up also. Meanwhile, Bob gets busted (for first time, by accident) in the Stonewall riots. Lou's cardigan catches on fire at a National Review backyard barbeque. Ginsberg goes to work for Crawdaddy after I hire Stan as art director....

Gorgeous, George
In case you never "got" George Jones when he was still breathing.

A Ryan Shame
Ryan Gosling's directorial debut played Cannes this week and got a great deal of applause--and boos. Since it's being compared with work of David Lynch that's a bad signal for me. But here's the first teaser clip. I do like the bike on fire going by.

Today in Gun Nutty USA
The usual: 4-year-old shoots self in head with gun in home. This time: Indiana. "The parents told police they were tending to their 5-year-old daughter and 1-year-old son when they heard the gunshot.
The Lake County coroner ruled the boy’s death an accident, but the case remains under investigation."
