Arguably the founder of soul music, and, for my money, possessed of the most incredible male voice (and style and technique) in all of popular music, Sam Cooke (1931-1964) was also a fabulous songwriter. I saw the house where he grew up, in Clarksdale, Mississippi, in my "musical pilgrimage" to the Mississippi Delta in the spring of 2009.

My goal was to put together the very best collection of his songs (29 of them) on one CD (he wrote all but one), and the best songs of the rest of his amazing catalogue on a second CD (he wrote 42 out of the 55 total songs). The dates are from the time of recording and the Billboard pop chart highest position is listed for Top 40 singles. See also my related post, Sam Cooke: The Greatest Singer of All Time: Chronological Discography.

Lost My Part-Time Job (The Economy Strikes Again); I Need Your Support

December seems to always be the time that these events occur in my life. The stereotypical "hardship before Christmas" thing or something . . . December 1, 2001 was my last day on my old delivery job that I had all through the 90s. The company was going out of business. It was two weeks after my daughter and fourth child was born. I announced it on my website and inquired as to whether folks thought I should enter into apologetics full-time. and were willing to support me in that endeavor. They did (with generous donations), and so I did! It's been exactly nine years now. I had just published my first book on my own. Two years later it was picked up by Sophia Institute Press.

The rest is history. Now I have 23 published books: six with "official" publishers,(Sophia: four, Our Sunday Visitor: one, and Saint Benedict Press / TAN Books: one), and my name is fairly well-known in the Catholic apologetics world and the Christian blogosphere. But it's a small book market and it's very difficult for anyone to live off of Catholic apologetics writing alone, without the supplemental aspects of TV and radio and lecture tours and other talks (maybe Scott Hahn could, but he is a professor anyway and has a stable income). I've managed to do it somehow, by God's ultimate grace and provision, but have needed supplemental part-time work to make it possible at all.

Today, on December 2, 2010, I just found out that I will lose my part-time job as Internet Forum Coordinator and Moderator at The Coming Home Network at the end of the month: one that I have had since November 2007. As with the other loss of employment in 2001, it had nothing whatever to do with my job performance. CHNI, as a non-profit organization (for the purpose of assisting those who wish to enter the Catholic Church: especially clergy) is experiencing a great decrease in donations. They're forced to make difficult cuts (more than just my own job). The economy is affecting all sales. The entire country is reaping the benefits of (without getting political here) the foolish financial and budgetary choices that we have made.

This was my dependable, regular income every other week. It had already been cut by 57% last year. Beyond that, I rely on e-book sales and paperback sales and generous donations from readers like you. Almost all of the royalties from my paperback books come just twice a year. I have a wife and four children to support. They are all home-schooled, and two of them have special needs (one of them being autistic).

I'm trying to make this as brief as I can and am simply telling my story and making the need known. Millions who are suffering due to the bad economy. But I am also (as a missionary of sorts) partially reliant on donations from people who believe in the value of the apologetic / evangelistic work that I do: have been for nine years. I don't make a big deal of it, and try to trust God and let my work speak for itself, but I have always needed donations in addition to book sales in order to get by.

I never ask for a donation unless it is from a person who totally believes in this work and/or has been helped by it themselves. Many many people have used my website for free and have never given any donation at all. I haven't pressured anyone to do so. I rarely talk about it at all. But it took thousands of hours of time to produce everything that you see here. Time is money. I've had to sacrifice a lot to create this body of work that is my writing. It's a labor of love. I've been writing Christian and specifically Catholic apologetics now for almost literally thirty years (since early 1981). I wouldn't trade my life for anything. I love it. At the same time, I have to make a living like everyone else. Gotta bring home the bacon to my family of six; have to pay my mortgage like every other home owner . . .

I ask for your prayerful consideration in supporting this apostolate. The work I have done is evident: over 2600 posts on this blog; the books . . . And it is evidently fruitful, with hundreds of personal testimonies received from people being helped in faith or assisted in becoming convinced of Catholicism, and entering the Church. I also have done a considerable amount of interaction with atheists and have been emphasizing that in recent months. My blog just passed the 1.5 million visitors mark.

I'll be looking for a new part-time job of some sort to fill in the gap, but I will keep doing what I do (i.e., apologetics, writing, outreach), no matter how much work is required (there are only so many hours in a day), and will still need support from donations to do so (as I always have). I'm a lifer. I have total commitment to my vocation. The Lord will provide. He does so, however, not by sending dollars from heaven like manna, but by speaking to the hearts of people like you: many of whom have been helped in some fashion through my writing, by God's grace (all glory to God for that). God does provide, and He does so through people. Apologetic outreach is very much a group, team effort. Both prayer and financial support are very necessary for it to be possible on a devoted, trained, full-time level.

Please prayerfully consider a generous tax-deductible donation or a purchase of my paperback books, or my 15-for-$25 or (newly-added) 5-for-$15 e-book package deals. Thank you so much for your support and for reading, and I wish you all a very blessed Advent and Christmas.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_FOIrYyQawGI/TMjS2iE-gPI/AAAAAAAADCo/ziMOOi93WnE/s1600/MysticMountain%28Hubble%29.jpg
[ source ] "Mystic Mountain". From the Hubble page: "chaotic activity atop a pillar of gas and dust, three light-years tall, which is being eaten away by the brilliant light from nearby bright stars. The pillar is also being assaulted from within, as infant stars buried inside it fire off jets of gas that can be seen streaming from towering peaks. . . . Scorching radiation and fast winds (streams of charged particles) from super-hot newborn stars in the nebula are shaping and compressing the pillar, causing new stars to form within it. Streamers of hot ionised gas can be seen flowing off the ridges of the structure, and wispy veils of gas and dust, illuminated by starlight, float around its towering peaks. The denser parts of the pillar are resisting being eroded by radiation. Nestled inside this dense mountain are fledgling stars. Long streamers of gas can be seen shooting in opposite directions from the pedestal at the top of the image. Another pair of jets is visible at another peak near the centre of the image. These jets, (known as HH 901 and HH 902, respectively, are signposts for new star birth and are launched by swirling gas and dust discs around the young stars, which allow material to slowly accrete onto the stellar surfaces. Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3 observed the pillar on 1-2 February 2010. The colours in this composite image correspond to the glow of oxygen (blue), hydrogen and nitrogen (green), and sulphur (red)."

(book completed on 20 October 2010; 301 pages)

[to purchase (MSWord + PDF e-book), go to the bottom of the page]

By its very nature, this work depends in great measure on the marvelous Internet links technology, in order to make instantly accessible, articles on any given scientific (and also mathematical and sometimes philosophical) matter or discovery. If readers want to know more about the particulars and technical details referred to in passing, then the many hundreds of links provided in this work will be quite convenient for that purpose. My own greatest interest lies in the areas of history of science and philosophy of science: and those are my own emphases in the book.

At this point the book will be available only as an e-book, because of the importance of maintaining the links. But I may change my mind (especially if people start requesting a paperback). The links are functional in the MSWord / doc version, but not in the PDF. Both are included in the set (5 books for $15). More info. at the bottom of this page.

16 Atheists / Agnostics & Me: Sounds Like a Good Ratio! Further Adventures at an Atheist "Bible Study" Group With Former Christians Jon and "DagoodS"

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_FOIrYyQawGI/TO1N2hczHqI/AAAAAAAADFQ/t_6Or6RzWKQ/s1600/BibleRipped.jpg

Last night I attended for the third time an "atheist Bible study" group in metro Detroit led by Jon, a former evangelical and friendly fellow, with whom I have debated the Galileo issue. He has a blog called Prove Me Wrong. The first time I went there, several months back, I was invited as a guest speaker. It was simply a Q & A, "grill the apologist" session (due to my dislike of lecturing as my own method of communication), mostly devoted to the usual garden-variety questions about Catholicism. Jon later described the night as follows:

I run a bible study. It's for those interested in understanding the Bible from a secular perspective. We're mostly atheists but we do have some Christian participation. A couple of times instead of studying the Bible I've simply brought in a religious person. So once Roman Catholic apologist Dave Armstrong came. A lot of atheists regard Christian belief as extremely easy to debunk and I thought it would be fun to bring in someone that has thought through common objections and is able to turn it back on atheists. Make them exercise their brains a bit. We had a great time with Dave.

That time, there were eleven atheists and myself. It was the most enjoyable and challenging evening I have ever spent as an apologist in almost 30 years of apologetics. Several of the people said that I had won their respect, by simply showing up and being cordial and willing to answer their questions and do some back-and-forth. For their part (save for just one person who was later kicked out of their group) they were very cordial and friendly.

This is not the stereotypical "angry atheist" group (example: John Loftus' Debunking Christianity blog), with (irrational, self-contradictory) anger against God and Christianity upfront and dominating everything, complete with ubiquitous personal insults towards Christians. No; Jon, to his great credit, is trying to do something different, and to actually seek to better understand Christianity and Christian arguments and to have some real dialogue.

I went a second time and enjoyed some great discussion around a campfire (mostly with the guy who had given me the hardest time in the first meeting: insinuating that I was dishonest or ignorant or both). Then I invited Jon to my house to do a presentation on the nonexistence of Jesus (a position he holds tentatively). That went well, too, and Jon gave the following description of his experience:

I had the opportunity last Friday to sit down with some Catholics and just spend an evening discussing some of our disagreements. It was me along with another atheist (who I met for the first time) and a few Catholics. It was put together by Dave Armstrong. I really appreciate Dave. He's one of those people that is able to sit down and disagree with me strongly, but do it in a way that makes for productive and friendly dialogue. Not all Christians can do this, nor can all skeptics.

Apparently, Jon has a somewhat more favorable view towards my reasoning abilities these days, compared to 26 March 2010, when he wrote (I tease him about this):

As far as apologists go I kind of like Roman Catholics. Dave Armstrong may be extremely irrational. But he's always been fairly charitable.

Last night, the person doing the presentation was a guy who goes by "DagoodS": another former Christian who runs a blog called Thoughts From a Sandwich. He is an attorney; a very animated, thoughtful, academic type (the sort of person I particularly love talking to and learning from). He talked about how Christians defend the resurrection of Jesus; playing "Christian" most of the time. It was historiographically dense (with many "footnote" references to "what scholars today think"), interesting enough, and entertaining on its own level, but ultimately not to my own taste because it was a professorial-type lecture (complete with the white board and markers). It was like being in a graduate-level history class (or maybe a Unitarian Bible study). I want to dialogue (as is well-known to my readers by now), and that never occurred. We all have our preferences.

One of the few critiques I was able to get in at all had to do with the relentless, dogmatic presuppositional skepticism of atheists. DagoodS asked the group (17 including myself) how many believed that miracles occur. I was the only one to raise my hand. Then he asked how many believed that miracles might possibly occur. Jon raised his hand, and possibly one other. Only one or two even allowed the bare possibility. This exactly illustrated the point I was to make.

DagoodS was saying that it is more difficult to believe an extraordinary miracle or event than to believe in one that is more commonplace. True enough as far as it goes. But I said (paraphrasing), "you don't believe that any miracles are possible, not even this book raising itself an inch off the table, so it is pointless for you to say that it is hard to believe in a great miracle, when in fact you don't believe in any miracles whatsoever." No response. I always try to get at the person's presuppositions. That is my socratic method.

This being the case, for an atheist (ostensibly with an "open mind") to examine evidence for the Resurrection of Jesus, is almost a farcical enterprise from the start (at least from a Christian perspective) because they commence the analysis with the extremely hostile presuppositions of:

1) No miracles can occur in the nature of things.

2) #1 logically follows because, of course, under fundamental atheist presuppositions, there is no God to perform any miracle.

3) The New Testament documents are fundamentally untrustworthy and historically suspect, having been written by gullible, partisan Christians; particularly because, for most facts presented therein, there is not (leaving aside archaeological evidences) written secular corroborating evidence.

Some atheists (like Jon) even claim (or suspect) that Jesus didn't exist at all (making such a topic even more absurd and ludicrous (given that premise) than it already is in atheist eyes. Yet they think that such an examination of the Resurrection is an objective endeavor on their part, as if they will come to any other conclusion than the foregone one that they have already decided long since, upon the adoption of their atheism? And we are the ones who are constantly excoriated for being so "inflexible" and "dogmatic" and "closed-minded" to any other truths besides Christian ones?

The lecture went on for two hours in the library room where the group met, and then we went to a restaurant. Over there, I wasn't seated next to either Jon or DagoodS (there were about 13 people present), so further discussion with them wasn't possible. Instead I talked a lot about the problem of evil and God's supposed serious deficiencies, with a third person, with the person on the other side of me asking me intermittently about purgatory and limbo and indulgences.

I was able to get in at least one important point with Jon at the restaurant. He was making fun of the popes taking many centuries to decide the dogmatic question of the Immaculate Conception of Mary [1854]. So I noted (with some vigor) that people (not just atheists but also Protestants) are always criticizing popes (and the Church as a whole) for supposedly declaring things by fiat and with raw power, apart from rational deliberation and intellectual reflection (which is a myth), yet on the other hand, if they take centuries to let the Church reflect and ponder important issues (this example, Mary's Assumption [1950], papal infallibility [1870]), by not yet declaring something at the highest levels of authority, then they get blasted for being indecisive and wishy-washy and lacking authority.

It was a classic case of the Catholic Church always having to be criticized, even if there are simultaneous contradictory criticisms taking place. It's the amusing, ironic spectacle of people illogically falsely accusing us of being illogical. If we do one thing we are wrong and stupid and illogical because of thus-and-so. If we do the exact opposite and contrary of that, we are still wrong and stupid and illogical for reasons that utterly contradict those of the prior criticism. And so on and on it goes. The only thing that critics of Catholicism "know" is that the Catholic Church is always wrong. That is the bottom line. We seem to be everyone's favorite target and "whipping boy."

DagoodS' specialty (like that of many atheists of a certain sort; especially former Christians) is relentlessly trying to poke holes in the Bible and dredging up any conceivable so-called "contradiction" that he can find. It's the hyper-rationalistic, "can't see the forest for the trees" game. As I've often said, such a person approaches the Bible like a butcher approaches a hog. Their mind is already made up. If they go looking for errors and "contradictions" they will assuredly always "find" them.

And if a Christian spends the great deal of laborious, tedious time required to debunk and refute these in order to show how they are not, in fact, contradictions (as I and many others have done), they simply ignore that as of no consequence and go their merry way seeking out more of the same. It never ends. It's like a boat with a hundred holes in the bottom. The Christian painstakingly patches up the last one while the atheist on the other side of the boat merrily drills another one to patch. I'll play the game for a while and every now and then but it is never to be taken too seriously because it is, quite literally, just a game in the end.

I have actually debated DagoodS several times in the past on the Internet, and have critiqued his deconversion story (atheists invariably despise the unmitigated gall of a Christian daring to do that!):

On the Alleged Contradictions of 2 Samuel 24, and 1 Chronicles 21 and 27

Alleged Contradictions Regarding the Twelve Disciples of Jesus

Discussion With Atheists on Hell, the Argument From Desire, and God's Justice and Ours (+ Part Two)

Dialogue With Atheists on a Supposedly Sexist, Misogynist Bible and Christianity, and on Female Atheist Disdain for Christian Women as Abused "Sheep" [his words are in purple]

"DagoodS" Deconversion Story, Part I: Projection, Open-Mindedness, and Presuppositional Issues

Critique of "DagoodS"' Deconversion Story Meets a Sudden Premature Death

Now that I have met the man, and had no chance to interact with him last night for more than 90 seconds, I may try to set aside some time in my busy schedule to debunk more of his skeptical excursions undertaken for the purpose of undermining the trustworthiness and inspiration of the Holy Bible. In all likelihood, judging from his past responses, any such replies will have no effect on him, but they can help Christians see the bankruptcy of atheist anti-biblical arguments, and those on the fence to avoid falling into the same errors of logic and fallacious worldviews built upon such errors.

And that is the whole goal of apologetics, and particularly the dialogical apologetics that I specialize in: to help people (by God's grace) avoid theological and philosophical errors and to be more confident in their Christian and Catholic beliefs, by understanding solid intellectual rationales for same. We remove obstacles and roadblocks. What the person will do with that information is a function of their minds and free wills and God's grace, and that is out of the apologist's hands.

Prayers Addressed to Body Parts (?); Sacred Heart of Jesus; Immaculate Heart of Mary Devotions: Biblical Reflections

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_FOIrYyQawGI/TOw8ZnEUFII/AAAAAAAADFI/EXsVZbte4jQ/s1600/SacredHeart2.jpg
On the CHNI board where I am the head moderator, a person (Catholic convert since 1997) wrote:

In several devotions attached to private revelations which have become popular over the last couple of centuries, I hear prayers being addressed to a body part or some other noun rather than to the name of a Person of the Trinity, or to a saint. Examples are:

(a) In the Divine Mercy chaplet, there is a prayer which begins "O Blood and Water…" and, I think, ends with "we trust in You".

(b) In devotions derived from the Fatima visions, one will hear prayers addressed to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, or hear people speak of "having a devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary".

(c) In devotions derived from the Sacred Heart visions granted to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, I hear prayers such as "Sacred Heart of Jesus, I trust in You".

I find these usages confusing, at the least, and at worst, incredibly off-putting. If I wish to address a prayer to Jesus, to ask for His mercy based on His shed blood, I would pray, "Dear Jesus", or "Dear Lord", or some other direct form of address. The same with Mary – when I wish to ask for her intercession, based on the mother's love I know she has for me, I ask her directly. Her heart is not a separate entity, nor is it capable of interceding for me, since it is not a person. Why would I address a prayer to it?

My reply follows.

* * * * *

Aside from the clearly sacramental nature of the language of body parts, it is also just a convention of language. For example, if we call someone "sweetheart" we are saying they are characterized by having a sweet heart; so much so that we make that idea a sort of personification for their whole person.

"Braveheart" is the same thing: a person who was characterized by bravery (William Wallace: the great Scottish national hero).

Or we will say, "he's a brain" or speak of a "hired hand" and so forth. So the fact that this enters into Christian devotional language, too, should not surprise us. The Old Testament was very rich in such visual imagery.

I found a surprising amount of biblical material about two of the most famous "body part devotions":

Sacred Heart and Immaculate Heart Devotions: Some Biblical Indications in Harmony With Them

* * *

The person counter-replied (and my further response follows):

I am familiar, of course, with all those Biblical references to Mary's heart, and the other references to Jesus's heart. None of them try to refer to the heart as an entity, and the way they do refer to the heart makes perfect sense. I just don't follow the conceptual leap that must have been made, some time in the early Middle Ages, from "Mary pondered all these things in her heart" to "Immaculate Heart of Mary, I trust in you." I wish there were a way to trace the development from one to the other.

So what I deduce from this is that this type of phrasing is a spiritual shorthand to refer to concepts which might otherwise take a lot more words, and it developed in a spiritual and historical culture very different from the ones we live in now. I'm afraid I'm still going to find it a bit off-putting, but if the Lord wants me to be able to use these devotions, I'm sure He'll show me how to get around that.

Could this not be an example of personification?

Secondly, perhaps you are familiar with the Bible sometimes using the word soul (which is the spiritual part of us only) for the whole person. Vine's Expository Dictionary of NT Words has as one meaning of soul (Greek, psuche or psyche):

the equivalent of the personal pronoun, used for emphasis and effect
This is more strikingly apparent in the literary usages of the Old Testament, with the word nephesh (the usual Hebrew word for soul). The King James Version particularly brings this out (thus showing that this sort of literary device was more in use in the past). But in each case I cite below the Hebrew word nephesh is present. It is used every time soul appears in the OT in the KJV, except for one single verse (Job 30:15):

Genesis 2:7 . . . man became a living soul.

Genesis 17:14 . . . that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken my covenant.

Exodus 12:15 . . . that soul shall be cut off from Israel.

Exodus 12:19 . . . that soul shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he be a stranger, or born in the land. (cf. 31:14)

Leviticus 5:2, 4 Or if a soul touch any unclean thing, whether it be a carcase of an unclean beast, or a carcase of unclean cattle, or the carcase of unclean creeping things, and if it be hidden from him; he also shall be unclean, and guilty. . . . Or if a soul swear, pronouncing with his lips to do evil, or to do good, whatsoever it be that a man shall pronounce with an oath, and it be hid from him; when he knoweth of it, then he shall be guilty in one of these. (cf. 5:15, 17; 6:2; 7:18, 20-21, 25, 27)

Leviticus 17:10 . . . I will even set my face against that soul that eateth blood, and will cut him off from among his people. (cf. 17:12, 15; 18:29; 19:8)

See many many more examples.

So if a soul, which is not even the material part of a person, can be referred to as the whole person, why not also the heart, which in the Hebrew worldview was seen as the "residence" of the soul? I don't see any difference between the two. If someone else does, I'd like to hear their thoughts. It's an explicitly biblical notion.

There may not be anyone praying to a heart in the Bible, but the concept of part of a person being referred to as the whole person is clearly present, and thus the sacred heart and immaculate heart devotions are also of the same type of concept by analogy and deduction.

Yet another way to look at it is as an analogy to the sort of idea expressed in the statements, "those words really spoke to his heart" and "I really took your advice to heart" and (the old Hank Williams song) "my heart would know" or "we had a heart to heart talk." Everyone knows that these are not literal statements, but we also all know what they mean.

So if we can, in this sense, speak to someone's heart, what is the objection to praying to the heart of Jesus? I would contend that people know what this means. It is simply a more poetic, pungent way of expressing it, but it is not at all unlike language that we hear and use all the time.

1.5 Million Blog Visitors and Still Countin' and Goin' Strong! Thanks for Reading!

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_FOIrYyQawGI/TOgTkJzyEOI/AAAAAAAADFA/8HrUQ5EA41U/s1600/1.5%2BMillion.jpg

One can see this figure on the bottom of the sidebar: 1,501,050 as of this writing (since 2 February 2004). That includes the previous Site Meter figures compiled before the new blog design (when the count was reset). Thanks for reading! I appreciate very much all of you who stop by: even my harsh critics. Here are previous related posts:

Blog Passes One Million Visitors Mark (1.5 Million Page Views) [10 October 2008]

Cor ad cor loquitur Passes the One Million Page Views Mark [7 September 2007]

Cor ad cor loquitur Passes Half-Million Visitors Mark [17 January 2007]

Cor ad cor loquitur Passes the 300,000 Visitors Mark [6 March 2006]

I dedicate this celebration to Bishop James White, who confidently predicted over five years ago that this blog would wither up and die (or at least be reduced to virtual insignificance) if I stopped debating anti-Catholic, logically challenged know-nothings such as himself. Bishop White wrote on 5 April 2005:

Same fellow who then took an oath [this is a lie] to stop interacting with "anti-Catholics" (convenient use of terminology) - which had the not overly unexpected result of basically killing his blog, which then went into hibernation during Lent anyway.

I was getting about 300 hits a day then. My average as of writing is 843 per day. I haven't debated anti-Catholics (save for one exception) in over three years. I only did occasionally before that. This is the sort of silliness we get from someone who doesn't have the slightest idea of the range of topics that I cover on this blog (my anti-Catholicism web page is but one of over 50 such topical pages).

I also dedicate this post to anti-Catholic luminary and distinguished personage Eric Svendsen, who wrote prophetically on 4 January 2005:

It appears that direct and substantive critiques of his work have proved too much for Dave Armstrong. He has pulled the plug on his little blog experiment gone bad (Read). It seems Dr. White, in his critiques of Armstrong's arguments that supposedly "confound Protestants," ended up "confounding" Armstrong himself . . . Wasn't it Dave Armstrong who criticized me for closing the comments section of my blog . . .? Wasn't it Armstrong who criticized James White for not opening a comments section on his blog? Wasn't it Armstrong who criticized Tim Enloe for closing the comments section of his blog. And now, as poetic justice would have it, Dave Armstrong is not merely closing the comments section of his apologetic blog--he's getting out of the apologetic blog business entirely! Wow; bravo James [White]! If we had only known earlier that it would take only five consecutive exegetical critiques of Armstrong's argument to shut him up (Tit 1:10-11), many would have done this a long time ago. Well done! : ) ("More Poetic Justice From the RC Apologetic Front")

One can have a great deal of fun playing with numbers. Another amusing incident along these lines occurred recently, when the anti-Catholic Peter Pike was mocking me for some wrongheaded reason (as usual with these guys). He had written the following at Steve "Whopper" Hays' Cryablogue site (on 23 September 2010):

Yet More Proof That Dave Armstrong is Dishonest

Too bad for Dave I can post my comments in a forum that receives far more than double the hits per day he gets, so when he deletes them it only means more people read them.

The charge was that I was deliberately deleting his comments on my blog. But unfortunately for Pike I proved shortly afterwards that it was the automatic Blogger spam function that had sent one of his comments to the spam folder for some reason. I restored it once I found this out. Of course he didn't retract the false charge. What else is new with anti-Catholics?

But the funniest thing was his claim that Steve Hays' site receives "far more than double the hits per day" than my blog. I showed at the time (from Site Meter stats on both blogs) that I was receiving an average of 899 hits per day, whereas Steve Hays' Cryablogue was receiving 852. Curious math, that. A quick check today has Hays at 821 and my site at the same time receiving 843. Obviously, then, Hays is still gettin' "far more than double the hits per day" compared to me. Anti-Catholic arithmetic is about as compelling as anti-Catholic theology and pseudo-"history".

I couldn't resist a little tweaking of my harshest critics. One has to laugh at these things once in a while. With all seriousness, though, it is precisely because I continue to have an influence in the Catholic apologetics world, that I pose such a threat to them, and so they have to resort to personal attack in order to try to besmirch my credibility and my name. In order to attack the dreaded Catholic Church: the Beast, they decide to attack and slander her defenders. If they didn't think I was persuading people they would simply ignore me. It obviously hasn't worked.

I didn't get into Catholic apologetics and evangelism to win a popularity contest and be well-liked (or to make tons of money: ha ha!!!). It is my calling from God. It is what I was put on this earth to do (and I've had the privilege to now do it full-time for almost nine years). If I were to let personal attacks hinder my work, I would have never begun it, because it is all part of the package of being an apologist. Often, people don't like it when someone disagrees with their opinions. They take it personally, and so they often attack, the person, like a mother bear with her cubs.

I give all the glory to God that anyone reads my writing at all, and that He has used this poor sinner to spread His message of the Gospel and the fullness of spiritual and theological and moral truth in the Catholic Church. I wouldn't trade my life for anything. God bless all of you. I can't tell you how honored I am that you read what I write. Spread the message! The harvest is ready and the laborers are few.

Anti-Catholic John Q. Doe Still Obsessed With My Work (98 Posts!): Pretense of a "DA-Free" Blog, Removal of My Name, and Absurd Anonymous Book Reviews

John Q. Doe: "I've always thought of myself as a caricature . . ." (3-2-07)

Doe (4-19-10): Would it help you to show what a "viper" I am over on your blog if I banned you? If you really want to [be] banned in order to revise your victim status at the hands of a dastardly anticatholic viper, I'll oblige you.

Me (4-19-10): Oh, that would be wonderful. Then you could be in the sublime, noble tradition of White, Svendsen, King, Hays, and Enloe (and current-day liberals and Democrats and Marxists): shutting down and shutting up folks who disagree with you. I think it would be very appropriate. What do you think?

Doe (4-20-10): Have you ever met one of those guys who says, "I dare you hit me, go ahead!" C'mon Dave, the show is over. . . . If you've got any sort of respect for your enemy (based on whatever Bible verse you come up with), please don't hijack another blog post that has nothing to do with you.

Doe (4-20-10): So... anyone wanting more interaction with Dave, please visit his blog.

Doe (4-20-10): Dave Armstrong's comment was deleted . . . Anyone wishing to read Mr. Armstrong's response on other topics can visit his blog.

* * * * *

Doe (11-10-10): I recall deleting some comments about or directed toward DA recently, simply because I promised DA in private correspondence that I would try to make my blog DA free. Anything that has to do with him or mentioning him gets dumped, including any comments he makes.

* * * * *

It gets awful ridiculous. The anti-Catholic bar for intellectual integrity and truth-telling is already scandalously low. Right now, for example, on Doe's site his blowhard "has no idea how profoundly ignorant he is" associate John Bugay is actually arguing with a straight face that Pope Benedict XVI is "pretty much a full-blown pantheist".

Now we also have the ludicrous spectacle of anti-Catholic Reformed Protestant polemicist and perpetual slanderer John Q. "Deadhead" Doe pretending that his site is a "DA-free zone". This is not the case at all. He decided to (hypocritically) ban me from making any comment months ago, but he has not removed all references to me by any means. So apparently he thinks it is perfectly kosher to keep writing and lying about someone (keeping old stuff posted), while the same person cannot respond on the same site.

He had a chance to truly remove all his hogwash and rotgut about me a while back when I suggested in an open letter that we both remove all of our materials about each other. He refused to do so and claimed it would be too difficult to find the time to do that, yet he managed to find time to remove many references to my name (he'll put something like "a Romanist apologist" when referring to something of mine, or he often uses "DA" to refer to me, as a search on his two sidebar searches will quickly illustrate).

But Doe retains older materials and he also has some more articles about me (with my name fully on display) at James White's blog. I have just a few articles up dealing with Doe (the most fun one being a documentation of his many -- quite serious -- innuendoes that I suffer from psychosis or some serious form of mental disability).

Now even mention of myself or my blog by commenters (even those who are partisans to Doe's anti-Catholic cause) is being disallowed. Hence, after one guy's ("Viisaus") comments mentioning me were deleted. Bugay informed him:

Of course, you are aware that this is a "DA-Free" blog. (11-17-10)

Doe chimed in a few comments later:

I ended up deleting a few of your comments- not because you said anything wrong, but because there are particular Romanist apologetics blogs I'd rather not discuss. (11-18-10)

A search using the sidebar search function on his own blog (#2) quickly reveals that Doe's blog is not nearly as "DA-free" as he and Bugay are making out:

The Ultimate Motown Hit Song (and Great Song) Discography: 1959-1998 (The Best-Sounding Recordings)

"Hitsville, USA": the studio on West Grand Blvd. in Detroit, Michigan (now a museum), where most of the Motown recordings from 1959 to1971 were made

Motown's James Jamerson: The Greatest Bass Guitarist of All Time

"Pilgrimage" to Historic Blues and Country Music Sites, in the South, and in Detroit

I grew up in Detroit (southwest side, by Vernor and Central, for those of you who know the city at all), lived there from my birth in 1958 till 1975, and went to nationally-renowned Cass Technical High School near downtown, which was only about a mile away from the legendary Motown Studio (that I have visited twice), and Wayne State University, a little north of downtown. I still live only a mile or two away from southwest Detroit and go to church in downtown Detroit (just past the new football and baseball stadiums).

It was exactly the right time to grow up, in terms of the wonderful music coming out of this studio in my hometown. We're extremely proud of this heritage in the Motor City. Recently I put together a long-planned, chronological 11-CD compilation of Motown hit songs, from various sources. I listened to each song in as many versions as I could, in order to compare remastered versions, and mono vs. stereo.

I did the same with the Beatles a year ago when the remastered mono and stereo box sets came out. As with the Beatles, I found that I usually preferred the mono versions prior to around 1969-1970. They were likely the "primary" mixes (especially for the singles): intended for mono AM radio. This is how I (and most of us who were alive then) heard the songs all through the 1960s: through a car radio or mono record player (usually 45 rpm records in my case, as we had no Motown albums). So perhaps those in my generation (baby boomers) maintain a fondness for the old mono recordings that is a bit inexplicable for the younger folks who have known only stereo (and digital recording, which has only recently matched the audio quality that vinyl records had 40 or more years ago).

I follow the original 60s Motown artists (the most prominent ones) through the 70s, 80s, and 90s, even if they eventually went to another label (example: the 70s hits of Gladys Knight and the Pips, on other labels). So this is really (strictly speaking) a "discography of hit songs and best recordings of 60s Motown artists," since I don't include new artists from the 70s and onwards. But I didn't include, as another example, the 70s hits of The Spinners (only slightly successful at Motown), because they exemplified the "Philadelphia Sound" and thus were not really appropriate in a collection focusing on the classic "Motown Sound."

[Tracks in mono will be colored in blue. All tracks are 320kbps unless specified otherwise. The number following # is the song's highest position on the Billboard Pop Chart. Songs are chronological according to release date]
