FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Worldwide Launch of “New Adult” Gaming Novel at Howie’s Game Shack, Mission Viejo, CA: March 1, 2013
MISSION VIEJO, CA—Debut novelist Genese Davis, will be celebrating the official book launch of her literary gaming novel, The Holder’s Dominion, inside Howie’s Game Shack at Kaleidoscope Entertainment Center located at 27741 Crown Valley Parkway, on Friday, March 1st, 6-9 p.m.
Davis will autograph books and read from what is being called a “breakthrough novel” about the world of gamers. The book is geared toward a new trend of readers who are beyond high school and into their early 20s, earning a “new adult” classification. The author brings her own experience and insider knowledge to a novel that engages dedicated players and non-gamers alike. The fast-paced story aims to bridge the gap between families and friends of gamers who wonder about the allure behind their loved ones’ fascination with video games. Publisher’s Weekly praised Ms. Davis for sticking to “her new adult guns” and not classifying her work as either “young adult—Y/A,” which is usually directed toward high school readers, or “adult,” the more mature classification.
Also on March 1st, the artist who designed the book cover, Fabio Barretta Zungrone, Senior Matte Painter, will be signing his artwork in this exclusive opportunity. The evening will also include refreshments, a live-action book trailer viewing, and a special guest speaker appearance from a well-known face in the gamer industry. About the Author:
Genese Davis grew up in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and went on to the University of Texas at Austin, graduating with a degree in English. She taught and competed in dressage, studied fashion, and then took her competitive instincts to the fast-paced world of finance. She discovered the world of PC and console games as an adult and started playing MMOs almost a decade ago; she experienced more serious gaming while playing with competitive guilds in Final Fantasy XI and World of Warcraft and cracked the top 100 in the world for her class in the latter. During her time in-game, she gained a passion for the community as well as a vast admiration for video games and their artists, culture, and development. These experiences laid the foundation for her novel, The Holder’s Dominion, where Davis brings her own experience and insider knowledge to a novel that engages dedicated players and non-gamers alike.
Davis is also the owner of The Gamer In You, an online movement offering new meaning to the word ‘gamer.’ As a thought leader in video game culture and its social development, Davis aims to bridge the gap between families and friends of gamers who wonder about the allure behind their loved ones’ fascination with video games. She lives in Irvine, California, where she advocates for her other passion: animal rescue. For more information, visit her websites: www.GeneseDavis.com | www.TheGamerInYou.com

Celebrity Kristian Nairn Reviews The Holder’s Dominion
Celebrity Kristian Nairn Reviews The Holder’s Dominion
A fantastic actor and musician who is locally and internationally renowned,
Nairn is not only an incredibly talented artist, but he is also extremely kind, polite, caring and very active in the community. Nairn is also an avid gamer who plays during any free time he can scrounge. His favorite games right now are the two ‘crafts’: World of Warcraft and Minecraft.
Mage and Shaman are two of many classes he plays. Nairn’s extensive background in gaming has given him a bird’s-eye view of the stereotypes perpetuated by media outside the video game industry. Therefore, Nairn was immediately intrigued by the idea of a book like The Holder’s Dominion that aims to bridge the gap between families and friends of gamers who wonder about the allure behind video games. The Holder’s Dominion is being heralded as the first novel written about the world of gamers from a newcomer’s point of view, with a message that is transforming the representation of the video game industry worldwide. After breezing through the novel, Kristian Nairn praised the book saying:
“A complex and inventive tale, The Holder’s Dominion reveals the world of online gaming through revolutionary characters. Gaming has never looked more intriguing . . . or inviting.” —Kristian Nairn
To Kristian Nairn: Your excitement and enthusiasm for the positive and uplifting message that The Holder’s Dominion brings has helped bring families and friends together! Artist Spotlight: Candace Jordan
Today’s featured artist is Candace Jordan. Candace is an extremely gifted artist and graphic designer. She has a way of taking an idea and infusing it with vibrant authenticity. She produces high quality artwork that really shines. Candace has also been playing the cello for nineteen years now and has played with many classical and non-classical ensembles. Tattoo design is another of her favorite passions. Here are some examples of her work:

This week I got to sit down with Candace, where she highlighted what inspires her and what she’s working on now. Take a look!
1. What do you love most about artwork and design?
Candace Jordan: The stories behind them! Whether it’s a client’s story or a story I make up myself, I love to hear, create, and to tell the story through art.
2. What has been your most memorable piece of artwork or design project?
Candace Jordan: The most memorable would have to be this massive wall piece project for a friend of mine. It was a major headache, but came out really well (if I do say so myself). Once some final tweaks are made, the piece (which is actually two pieces) will be printed and mounted on the wall! While maybe not my favorite piece I’ve ever done, I’ll certainly always remember it! As for favorites, the tattoos I have done and am working on for both myself and my friends have all been a lot of fun.
3. How would you describe your ideal artwork goals?
Candace Jordan: I’m honestly not sure where my art will lead me. For now, I am happy bringing peoples’ ideas to life through commissions and tattoo projects, but I’d love to one day get involved in conceptual work for video games and movies.
4. If you could change two things in the artistic world would you change anything?
Candace Jordan: I would magically end all art stealing, digital or otherwise. And possibly remove certain modern “art” pieces. Seriously, a curtain hanging in a threshold does not represent the transition of our souls from this life to the next—it’s just a curtain.
5. How do you prepare for a design or concept session when starting your artwork?
Candace Jordan: Most of the art I do is tattoo design which usually involves a chat with the individual requesting the art and some discussion regarding placement, size, color/black and white, and, if applicable, back story for the reason they’re getting the tattoo. In all art cases, I love hearing about the story behind the art request because it helps my “creative juices” to flow—plus, I love a good story! After an initial consultation, I put on some Red vs. Blue for background noise and get to work! I’ve learned that I create my best work when I’m not fixating on it, so having a movie or music going on in the background or going for a drive helps me get ideas going.
6. What’s been your most challenging art project to date?
Candace Jordan: The previously mentioned wall piece. As much as I enjoy the (nearly) finished project, I really can’t stress how difficult it was to work on! So many failed trial and error attempts, so many different concepts and techniques, and so, so many mistakes made.
7. What are you working on right now?
Candace Jordan: Currently, I’m prepping the wall piece for printing as well as working on about half a dozen tattoo designs, including a massive back piece and my own half sleeves.
8. How can people follow you and all that you’re doing?
Candace Jordan: For now, most of my art is on my personal Facebook page and some of my favorites are on my Deviant Art page (c-jordan.deviantart.com). If you’re looking for design consultation, send me an email: candacejordan.design@gmail.com
I personally worked with Candace to create some crucial logos to extend the experience of my novel, The Holder’s Dominion. Thank you, Candace. You are such a pleasure to work with, you’re an incredibly talented artist, and your graphic designs are phenomenal. You gave the video game developer, Deluvian Games, and the MMO, Edannair, a way to leap off the page and exist in the real world, beyond the novel. Now, every reader will be able to live The Holder’s Dominion outside the book! Readers, click on DeluvianGames.com and Edannair.com and see for yourself!
Thank you for sharing some insights behind your artwork and graphic design, Candace!
Artwork can cause involuntary emotions such as fear, nostalgia, hope, conviction, and admiration. The artist possesses the potential to impact—to really move the primal core of every human being. And artists offer this power as gifts to the world. Even though their artwork is an extension of themselves, artists accept the risk and selflessly share anyway, without regard for their own protection. How can we ever thank them enough for their bravery?

The Holder’s Dominion Review: by Micky Neilson
MICKY NEILSON is the Publishing Lead at Blizzard Entertainment, where he has worked since 1993. Micky’s riveting and brilliant talents have led him to write for titles such as World of Warcraft, StarCraft, Warcraft III and Lost Vikings II. Micky’s first comic book, World of Warcraft: Ashbringer, hit number two on the New York Times Bestseller list for Hardcover Graphic Novels. Micky and James Waugh co-wrote World of Warcraft: Curse of the Worgen in 2011, and very recently Micky’s enthralling original graphic novel, World of Warcraft: Pearl of Pandaria, released and introduced readers to the PANDAREN, one of the most beloved (and mysterious) races in World of Warcraft. In addition, Micky has extended his innate ability for story crafting to screenplays, and with his writing partner Sam Didier, writes scripts in any spare time he can scrounge. It is truly an honor to reveal Micky Neilson’s review for my “New Adult” gaming novel, The Holder’s Dominion:

New York Times-bestselling author Micky Neilson reviews “New Adult” gaming novel:
“The Holder’s Dominion is a heartfelt, fast-paced thrill ride that will appeal to gamers and non-gamers alike.”
—Micky Neilson, New York Times-bestselling author
Joining iconic industry veterans like Christie Golden and Richard Bartle, Micky Neilson endorses what many sources are calling a “breakthrough novel.” Transforming the representation of the video game industry worldwide, The Holder’s Dominion is the only new gamer fiction of its kind. Following a newcomer to the world of online role-playing games, this book sidesteps stereotypes and reveals a tight-knit community facing a very real threat. Publisher’s Weekly praised Ms. Davis for sticking to “her new adult guns” and not classifying her work as either “young adult—Y/A,” which is usually directed toward high school readers, or “adult,” the more mature classification.
Davis brings her own online experiences and insider knowledge to a story that engages dedicated players and non-gamers alike in Kaylie’s quest to protect the ones she loves from a power-hungry manipulator. Along the way she realizes that the problems she hoped to forget are right there in her escapist fantasy—but so are the solutions. The hope is that this fast-paced, thrill ride will bridge the gap between families and friends of gamers who wonder why their loved ones play video games.
Micky: Your rich and imaginative writing captures readers around the world. You are meticulous in your craft; your writing combines a unique blend of strong prose and eloquent style that’s impossible to ignore. Thank you for your incredible review of my novel. Your positive, warm, and kind demeanor energizes everyone around you. You inspire perseverance and a proactive mentality that demonstrates just how important it is to create your future, not wait for it. You’ve made such a difference in my life and I am eternally grateful.

Howie’s Game Shack: Interview with Howie
Howie’s Game Shack has invented a new form of interactive entertainment, and is introducing social gaming as never experienced before.
The first time I stepped foot into Howie’s Game Shack, I was instantly blown away. Howie’s offers more than I could ever imagine for the picture perfect place to game. Not only does Howie’s hold events every week for every type of gamer, but also Howie’s is equipped with the friendliest staff, hot, tasty food, and an impeccably clean and upscale facility. Whether for casual or hardcore game-play, birthday parties, or competitive events, everyone will find their niche at Howie’s Game Shack.
And this week I got to sit down with the gaming master; the innovative visionary behind this amazing place; the owner and founder, Mr. Howard Makler.
When sitting down with Howard, I started with my favorite question: When did your passion for gaming begin?

Monster Xbox Alley
Howard explained that as a kid he started playing games at eleven or twelve years old—he had a Coleco Vision, one of the first consoles on the market, and his favorite game was Breakout. He also had one of the very first Apple computers and loved it!
At a computer camp in lake Tahoe, Howard found inspiration through camp counselors like legendary video game developer, Richard Garriott. And as Howard got older he looked to Nolan Bushnell, a founding father in the video game industry who founded companies like Atari and Chuck E. Cheese.
Before founding Howie’s Game Shack, Howard created and led a real estate surplus company for fifteen years, but he always made time for gaming. In fact, it was during a LAN (Local Area Network) party with his friends that the idea for Howie’s Game Shack struck. Why can’t there be a place with Monster drinks, hot pizza, and video games where we can all play together without having to haul our equipment around? Howard thought. That question laid the foundation for Howie’s Game Shack.

Endless Rows of Computers
I asked Howard what obstacles he faced when founding Howie’s. He said that the beginning was difficult because there was no track record, and certain stereotypes do exist in the world of video games. But the truth and core of the matter is that video games are the fabric of our youth, and by and large, video games improve and enhance our lives. Games bring people together in merriment, unlike any other type of entertainment. Howard quoted Nolan Bushnell saying, “Despite what some may have you believe, games exist to bring us together.”

Howie’s Front Corridor
My final question for Howard: What’s in store for Howie’s Game Shack?
“Growth!” Howard said. “We want to grow and expand to more areas!”
And there you have it. Led by a team of incredible, heartfelt individuals, Howie’s Game Shack will exceed your expectations and give you and your family an epic experience.
Special thanks to Rick, Brad, and Howard: Through your passion, dedication, and commitment to enhance our communities, you’ve created a business model that every company would be happy to emulate. Thank you for creating a home away from home, perfect for every gamer.

How to Shoot A Live-Action Book Trailer
Although fairly new to the publishing world, book trailers have blazed a trail full of new opportunities that connect viewers to books. If you are thinking about shooting a live-action book trailer, I’ve compiled a guide that should come in handy on your filmmaking journey.
Let’s start shooting!
Hold that thought. What about…
Pre-production
Adhering to the proper pre-production schedule before you start filming will be integral to producing a well-made short film. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
Lock the Script
Nail down the final screenplay. Focus on writing compelling action sequences with your main characters to immediately give the audience an investment in the story. Don’t give away the farm but provide enough context to make your audience want to know more. Pose questions that can only be answered if they read the book. Review your favorite movie trailers and jot down what makes them so enticing.
If this is your first film, avoid visual effects. Visual effects will increase your workload exponentially (unless you know someone or have a large budget). Plus, if the visual effects are done poorly, your entire film will suffer.
Build Schedule
Have your producer nail down the production schedule. Pre-planning is the simplest way to help your production run smoothly. Keeping on track will ensure that you deliver your epic film to the world on time. For a schedule example, click here: Filming Schedule
Acquire Investors
Locating your budget will be next. If you are paying for the trailer yourself, keep the script simple. This is the key to creating an affordable and time-efficient movie short. If you want to increase the production value it will be crucial to find investors with the understanding that this is a trailer created to sell your novel. Film driven investors will need additional explanation and maybe more coaxing.
Hire Director
Picking the right director(s) is important because they will be the visionary who interprets your screenplay from text to visuals. This relationship is key to creating something special. When selecting director(s), research their previous work through IMDB, Youtube, Vimeo, or other websites. When you select your favorite candidates, have a chat, go over the script, and brainstorm ideas together for how you envision the production’s final cut.
Storyboard/Script Breakdown
You have your director(s) now, so you can do a script breakdown and work on storyboards. For a smaller film this may not be as crucial, but again, being prepared will ensure a smooth production. Here is an example by Pixel Valley Studio: How to Break down a Script. As you can see, you and the director(s) need to go through every scene in the trailer and document the cast, location, costume, props… every single thing needed for every single scene.
Hire Pre-Production/Production Crew
Depending on the complexity of your trailer, your crew will vary. On set you will need (at minimum): Director(s), Producer(s), Camera operator, Grip(s), Production Sound. (If you have a very complex trailer, hiring a Director of Photography, Set Designer, Prop Master, Costume Designer and a Hair & Make-up Artist will help your project stand out.)
Location Scouting
Again, depending on the complexity, your location scouting can vary. If you keep your trailer with as few locations as possible, this step won’t be a headache. If your script cuts from fifteen different locations that include outrageously ambitious sets… i.e., mountains, ocean, cliffs, football stadium, horse ranch, submarine… etc. location scouting will be difficult if not impossible. Keep it simple; keep it safe.
Hire Cast/Rehearse
After you and the director(s) have locked the script, and have your breakdown of each scene, hire the appropriate cast. Go for professional. Take the time to host a casting call and hold proper auditions/interviews. Hiring the wrong actor for the role can instantly crush your trailer’s chances of success. During auditions, record the performances so that you, the director(s), and producer(s) can watch them back and make decisions at your leisure. After you find just the right people, rehearse as much as needed to prepare for the big shoot.
Rent Equipment
Filming in HD is practically a requirement today. Be sure the camera you are using has the capabilities for HD (and a great person that knows how to use it). There are plenty of pro-sumer cameras out there but this will all depend on your budget. Pick up something like a Red if you really want to step up the game.
Production
Pre-production is done! Phew! Now we go on set:
Principle Photography
Shoot each scene from every angle—give plenty for the editor to work with.
Review Dailies
Film pick-up-shots (As needed)
Wrap Shoot
Post Production
After filming is wrapped, post production begins:
Hire Post Production & Visual Effects Crew (as needed)
For post-production you will need: Editor, Sound Mixer, Composer, and Colorist. If you have visual effects you will also need to add: Visual effects artists such as modelers, animators, lighters, compositors, etc.
Editing
Editing is extremely important to telling the right story. With proper editing, you can pinpoint the type of emotions you want your audience to feel. Take your time with editing—this will be an essential step to creating an epic final product.
Complete Visual Effects
If your trailer requires visual effects, this is when that magic begins. After the edit is complete, VFX artists can add backgrounds, animations, motion graphics, etc.
Compose Final Soundtrack
Just like editing, sound will invoke the heart of your story to the audience. Pick the right music. For ideas, start here: Incompetech. Ideally though, hire a composer to create an original score.
Sound Mixing
Your sound mixer will integrate all the editors’ cuts and music with transitional sounds. If you are filming a thriller, your sound mixer will insert a cacophony of sounds to jar the audience, if you’re filming a romance, your mixer should adjust accordingly. Sound is one of the most obvious “tells” of production value. It’s often underrated and tells the audience immediately what kind of budget you had.
Color Correct / Color Grading
Your colorist will take all the footage from your HD camera and bring out the colors. Having a good colorist will ensure your movie looks crisp and vibrant. And it will help sell the mood of the moment. Understanding how the brain interprets color, and which color evokes which emotion, is a very powerful filmmaking tool.
Deliver Final Edit
This is it! We’ve made it. For reference on a final edit, here is an example of the 55-second book trailer by directors, Eric Kieron Davis and Brian Horn. Live-Action Teaser Trailer | The Holder’s Dominion
Compare your trailer side-by-side with the live-action book trailer for The Holder’s Dominion. Once your film achieves a precision edit that entices audiences quickly, (usually one minute or less), you are ready to deliver the final cut. You’ve completed a work of art. You didn’t rush the production or cut corners, and the result is a professional masterpiece you can be proud of. Show it off to the world with the hopes that it generates interest for your upcoming novel. Congratulations!
